May, 2015 Volume 70 Issue 5 Velkommen til — From The President With spring time and lime green colored deciduous young leaves all around us, we know it’s time to think and prepare for the month of May and the big LEL events that come with it. We begin with our May membership meeting and a delicious seafood cake dinner. May is the month that brings more people to our lodge. Our meeting will include awards night, with years of membership pins given out. The man, woman and couple of the year awards will be presented. Also, past presidents will be honored that evening. Plus, there will be a welcoming ceremony for new members. A shortened business meeting will also take place. Many people participate in keeping our lodge running smoothly. Actually, much of the business is handled at our monthly board meetings. The daily ongoing business is handled by our LE Building Association (LEBA). They are the stewards and caretakers of running the building. Judy Gray runs the office. Thank you, Judy; you and a select team do a fine job. We all thank all of you. The date of 17th of May will be forever the communities’ biggest event. The luncheon at the lodge begins at noon with Hardanger fiddle music before. Later, the women’s chamber chorus from Ballard High School will sing. The parade begins at 4 p.m. and, hopefully, the Ballard Avenue Farmer’s Market will be mostly gone by that time. Often there are more events happening than time slots or space available. Lori Ann Reinhall has organized a great line-up of talented musicians, singers and Leikarringen dancers at Bergen place that goes on from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Regarding the parade, our lodge will, of course, be walking in it. We truly welcome any and all members, out of town guests or friends to join our lodge group in the parade. Generally, all our Nordic groups are in the first half of the parade. We had a great turn-out last year. The esteemed 17th of May committee does ask those who walk/march in the parade to kindly sign a “Hold Harmless” agreement before participating. This simple but important legal form will be available 13th of May at our membership meeting and at the luncheon on the 17th. The committee has worked hard for an entire year to organize the yearly activities. Committee members are all volunteers from local Scandinavian groups and lodges of the Sons and Daughters of Norway. Over 12 groups are represented, including the City of Seattle, Yes, that’s correct; nearly a year’s worth of work for a one-day event! Plus, a considerable amount of Continued on Page 2 ... Our chairman this year is Captain Dale Pederson and co-chair is Kae Ellingsen. These two people lead our monthly Committee meetings. We all thank you, Capt. Dale and Kae. I am always amazed at how some volunteers end up with a nearly full-time job just making events happen. We are blessed with many volunteers who continuously give their heartfelt work to community cultural events. Thank you, loyal volunteers; we know who you are, we see you in action, and we salute you. It is you who make our beloved community alive, vibrant and complete. Regarding June, it seems like many of our members don’t come to our membership meeting that month, so attendance is low. This June, we will have a potluck dinner followed by a fancy ice cream dessert. Okay, folks, get out your favorite recipe and prepare something to share! We are calling all cooks to get into action and make a dish you can be proud of. Your favorite dish will work; please bring it. I will bring freshly baked mincemeat pies for dessert, to go with the vanilla ice cream. I enjoy cooking and sharing it; it always seems to be a great way to bring people together. Thinking beyond June, July will bring our Ballard Seafood Fest. Dates are 11th and 12th. LEL and the museum will work together putting up tents and booths somewhere along Market Street. We are planning a lot of good music, too. Stay tuned and read more about it in June’s Vikingen issue. Hope to see you all in May; we have a lot to celebrate and to be thankful for. We still need a few volunteers to set up for our dinner meeting on 13th May at the lodge. We start at 4 p.m. Thanks, and take care. Respectfully, your President, Lee Ehrheart May, 2015 2nd Saturday Happy Hour Scheduled for May 9th April Happy Hour was so successful that folks are looking forward to the 2nd Saturday of May. There were many new guests that found a good meal and a good time for the $5. Several members and guests showed up whom we have not seen in several months. The Raffle prize list was long and varied and had three of the traditional “spicy novels” on offer as prizes among many other items. The value of the prizes which were all donated was over $200. Attendees were able to buy Raffle tickets at $1 each or 6 for $5. Additional tickets were given out as a thank you for folks bringing additional finger food snacks for the buffet light supper table. Added this time were payments in raffle tickets for finding a fellow member with the same letter in middle names and another payment for the best joke told at each table if it was shared. May 9th will be next to the last second Saturday Happy Hour of the season so make plans now to attend from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Doug Warne Real Facts: The original name for the butterfly was "flutterby"! Anna Marie Jensen Exercise -- Has the Doctor Told You to Stay Fit for Life? Members and neighbors are still keeping healthy with attendance at the Wednesday Lodge exercise class led by Audrey Collins. Some added routines include the use of elastic bands for building strength. These exercises are in addition to improving balance, agility and brainpower and coordination. Elastic Bands can be purchased for a nominal fee at the meetings which are usually held in the main lodge hall. Cost of each session is $5 and can be paid on an “as you use it” basis. The class will continue through the summer but will take a several week break coinciding with the closing of the entire building for the annual cleaning schedule for the building. Early Warning: June Membership Meeting to be a Potluck In an attempt to improve the attendance for the traditional June membership meeting and Ice cream treat there have been some added developments. First, there will be a social hour at 5:30 p.m. and a potluck dinner at 6:00 p.m. So begin to decide now on your favorite recipe to share. The crack bartending team will see to it we have wine, beer and soft drinks to go with your dinner for generous donations made at the bar. They will also have a bottle of Kahlua to enhance the various condiments of the ice cream. This will be the last regular membership meeting until September so members should plan to attend and take care of summer business and begin preparations for Fall. Doug Warne Norway Hall This May 17 commemorates the grand opening of Norway Hall on May 17, 1915! The building is now owned by Cornish College of the Arts which is also celebrating its centennial. Nellie Cornish opened the school on November 14, 1914. The Seattle Landmark building is located at 2015 Boren Avenue in what was the heart of the Norwegian community at that time in Seattle. The cornerstone was laid on January 24, 1915. Valkyrien Lodge #1, Daughters of Norway, and Leif Erikson Lodge 2-001, Sons of Norway, owned the building together. Doug Warne As a member of Sound Harmony Sweet Adeline chorus, and a member of Leif Erikson Lodge, I would like to personally thank the members of Leif Erikson who were at the 2nd Wednesday dinner in April. We had a performance for you, which I think went very well. We could tell that you enjoyed it as much as we all did. We were absolutely thrilled when we got a standing ovation. That is a feather in our cap. Several of you asked how we did at competition. Turns out we were the smallest chorus to perform with only 15 members (the minimum required), plus our director. We were given a pretty good score of 430, which is in the C+ range. Not bad for a new chorus. There were 19 choruses competing and we came in #12. The larger choruses were ahead of us. The top winner (Pride of Portland) had 102 members on stage. Pretty hard to compete with that. But we had fun and enjoyed the experience. I just hope we will be able to sing again for your group. You made us feel special. Thank you.....Shirley (Sira) Smith One Liners: Be nice to your kids. They'll choose your nursing home. It was a beautiful night and the view from the second floor dining area was wonderful. After a delicious dinner, the Nordic Nights Talent Show took place. Unfortunately, Leif Erikson had not arranged any entrants to the show. This meant that hostess Kristine Leander repeatedly asked if there were Norwegian entries, and when there were none, concluded repeatedly that it was now clear that Norwegians had no talent! We made several decisions: Important: We will NOT MEET on Tuesday, May 12. With all the activities related to the 17th of May and other Lodge meetings, we decided to skip May’s gathering. Tuesday, June 9, at 11:30 a.m., we will meet at Swanson’s Nursery for lunch in their café, followed by shopping and browsing the beautiful plants and flowers. We voted to donate all the money we raised at our Norna booth on Heritage Day. We have issued a check for $196.50 to the Heritage Day committee for Leif Erikson Lodge. Judy Gray and Diane Adams Co-presidents LEBA Board Report The Leif Erikson Building Association (LEBA) administers and cares for the Hall. In other words, it is up to LEBA to raise the income that pays the bills incurred by the building. It is a board of nine members of the Lodge, elected by the Lodge. Each member serves for a period of three years; and every third year, three members are elected or reelected. The election is scheduled for the May 13 meeting. If you attend that meeting, you will meet the candidates and vote for your choices. Current concerns of the LEBA Board: Removing and replacing the two trees in front of the building -- in the parking strip on 57th. The City of Seattle is requiring their replacement because their appearance is no longer attractive, and the trees are no longer “trainable” by pruning in their current state. We sent nine letters to licensed arborists for estimates. Finding a new tenant for the Annex (office building) on 56th. As mentioned previously, Alaska Longline is moving to another building that will support their growing staff. If you are looking for a new location for your business, please talk to LEBA about the details of a rental. Joke Provided by Tim Hunter Page 66 Volume 70 Issue 5 May, 2015 The Kings and Princes of Norway Visit Seattle and Ballard! Seattle and Leif Erikson Lodge 2-001 have been visited by Norwegian royalty on many occasions. Norway has only had royalty in modern times since 1905, two years after Leif Erikson Lodge was formed! As the world is a big place and Norwegians have travelled far and wide to every corner of the world, royal visits must be spread out to visit conclaves of Norwegians and Norwegian immigrants and their descendants a couple of times during a king's reign and Seattle is no exception! On May 17, 1936, Crown Prince Olav V addressed the United States over KOMO radio. In 1939 Syttende Mai, Washington State, the Norwegian Male Chorus, and Washington Posten celebrated their Golden anniversaries, Crown Prince Olav and Crown Princess Martha visited Seattle! They made stops in many locations in the Pacific Northwest. May be you have visited some of the sites? At Smokey Point, the I-5 rest stop going north, there is a Giant Arborvitae, Western Red Cedar Thuja Plicata. This tree is so large you can drive a car through it, and they did. (However, it has been moved from its original location). The Crown Prince and Princess also made a stop in Stanwood to dedicate the memorials to the first Norwegian settler, Zakarias Martin Taftezon, and his family now buried in the Pioneer Cemetery. In a legendary mishap, they never bothered to ask the family (one descendent was in attendance at the dedication) how Martin's last name was spelled. By committee, it was decided to carve Taftezon as Toftezen, in granite, after lengthy discussions since, of course, the Norwegian way to spell his name was zen. At least people will get close to the correct pronunciation! Martin's mother was 72 when she arrived in the United States. She lived near Stanwood with her daughter and husband. When Bernhardine passed away, she continued to be moved from burial ground to burial ground until finally being joined with all her family at the Pioneer Cemetery. At last she finally rests in peace--all because of the Crown Prince's visit! According to HistoryLink, Crown Prince Olav V also visited Seattle in 1942 when he explained Norway's position as a country occupied by German troops. Both the King Haakon VII and the Crown Prince lived in England during the war while Crown Princess Martha, Olav's wife, and the rest of the family stayed in the United States. Crown Prince Harald V visited Seattle in January of 1964 which marked the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Norwegian Constitution. It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the dogs, cats and other small animals (mice, rats, and bugs) lived in the roof. When it rained, it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof; hence the saying "it's raining cats and dogs." There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house. This was a real problem in the bedroom, where bugs and other droppings could really mess up your nice clean bed. A bed with big posts and a sheet over the top afforded some protection. That's how canopy beds came into existence. For Sale - Norway Park -- Log Stua Lot 76 Norway Park. 2 bedroom 1 bath.
