Matthew 5:14
A VIEW FROM THE CROSS
Psalms 22 is one of the most powerful descriptions of the
crucifixion of Jesus found in the Bible. It tells us in detail how it felt
to die by crucifixion. We are told of the hurt and humiliation He felt
when the crowds laughed at Him and mocked His claim to be the
Son of God, Psalms 22:7-8. It also describes the physical pain He
felt when He says, “I am poured out like water, and all my bones
are out of joint: My heart is like wax; It is melted within me. My
strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaves to my
jaws.” (Psalms 22:14-15) David describes the nails in His hands
and feet in verse 16. We are even told that dogs (Jewish term for
Gentiles) are also involved in this crucifixion in verse 16.
This amazing and prophetic psalm actually tells us how Jesus felt
physically, emotionally, and spiritually while dying on the cross.
Even more inspiring is the fact that it wasn’t written by an eyewitness, but by King David who lived 1000 years before Jesus
was crucified. It is very obvious from this inspired account that
Jesus knew when He came to this earth how much He was going
to suffer to pay for our sins. He tells us He knew in John 12:27,
“Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me
from this hour. But for this cause came I unto this hour.” The hour
He speaks of is the time of His coming death on the cross as
verses 32-33 clearly state.
While Jesus was dying on the cross, He also observes and
comments on the people who are killing and mocking Him. He
sees and hears their scorn and unbelief in Psalms 22:7-8. He
sees them as lions after their prey in verse 13. He describes them
gambling for His garments in verse 18. Yet, He prays for them,
“Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.” The only
people at the cross who had love and compassion for Jesus were
his mother, Mary, her sister Mary, Mary Magdalene and one
apostle, John. (John 19:25-27)

A VIEW FROM THE CROSS continued—
UPDATE ON THE SICK & PRAYER REQUESTS:
Did Jesus also “see” you and me there at the cross? When Isaiah describes Jesus sacrifice, he
says, “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and Jehovah
hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.” (Isaiah 53:6) You stand before this very cross today and must
decide whether you will stand with those who mocked Him or those who loved and embraced Him. “
I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one comes unto the Father but by me.” (John 14:6) Will you
go to the cross with Jesus today? Will you die to your own sins, be buried with Jesus in baptism,
and let His blood cleanse you of sin? (Romans 6:2-6) You can stand with His mother and John
today.
Brooke, Liam, & Chad Hasbrouck are at home and
doing well.
Thank God for the cross.
We rejoice in the fact that Ian Fegley put on
his Lord in baptism last Sunday morning.

My 4-year-old son Zachary came screaming out of
the bathroom to tell me he’d dropped his toothbrush in the toilet. So I fished it out and threw it in
the garbage. Zachary stood there thinking for a
moment, then ran to my bathroom and came out
with my toothbrush.
He held it up and said with a charming little smile,
“We better throw this one out too then—it fell in
the toilet a few days ago.”
