Advocacy
Fighting stigma, speaking out, promoting recovery
At the core of Hazelden’s advocacy
and public policy work are several
guiding principles:
•A
ddiction is a treatable illness with
measurable outcomes of success,
and Hazelden’s addiction treatment
model offers the best opportunity for
lifelong recovery.
•A
ddiction to alcohol and other drugs
is a chronic illness and a public health
problem impacting all societies.
•S
tandardized treatment outcomes are
integral to ensuring that people receive
proper care. These standards must also
help to define the treatment field’s role in
the continuum of health care services at
the state and federal level.
•T
he stigma of addiction is a major barrier
to recovery; access to care is improved by
ending discrimination against people with
this illness.
Hazelden’s Center for Public Advocacy
works hard to fight the stigma of addiction
and to promote the promise and possibility of
recovery. Our efforts focus on defining and
advancing policy and legislation that will help
people with the disease of addiction more
easily find treatment and recovery support. We also encourage people to speak out and
tell their own stories to offer hope to others. 1
• All people with addiction deserve to find
treatment and recovery services appropriate
to their unique needs.
Prevention
Prevention
Hazelden is the leading provider of evidencebased curricula to K-12 educators and socialservice organizations nationwide to help prevent
the start of risky behaviors and build resiliency
in our youths. Studies show that:
Hazelden proudly offers
prevention resources for:
•A

•B

and other drug abuse
and other violent behavior
•S
uicide
• Young people who drink before age 14 are four times more
likely to develop serious alcohol problems than those who
abstain until age 21.
• 1 out of 3 young people nationally are being bullied or are
bullying others, putting them at greater risk for depression,
health problems, poor grades and alcohol or other drug abuse.
• Suicide is the third leading cause of death among 15- to
24-year-olds.
In addition to curricula for
educators and prevention specialists,
Hazelden has comprehensive
resources — including articles,
research, books, videos, and more
on the topic of prevention — to
help you detect the signs of risky
behavior. These materials can better
equip you to provide guidance to a

Research
Research
Hazelden’s Butler Center for Research
As addiction specialists, we know treatment is effective, yet the internal
and external processes that produce change remain relatively unknown.
The more we can objectively describe and measure processes and indicators
of change, the better we can target our treatment efforts, work to improve
treatment outcomes, and communicate to people about our results.
Hazelden is dedicated to improving
recovery from addiction by conducting
clinical and institutional research,
collaborating with other research
centers, and communicating scientific
findings. Our vision is to collectively
support sustained recovery for all who
seek help by capitalizing on research
advancements and incorporating these
findings into better standards of practice.
The Butler Center for Research at
Hazelden provides educational services
through peer-reviewed, published
research for professionals and through
the dissemination of current research
on various topics of interest within the
addiction treatment field.

Intervention
Intervention
Free online intervention tool available
In response to the growing need for chemical abuse information online,
Hazelden has created About My Drinking, a free and anonymous screening
and brief intervention tool designed to guide addicts and families to the
right help and resources.
About My Drinking can be used by
anyone concerned about their own
use or that of someone they care
about. Recommendations are made
and educational content is provided
based on the tool’s assessment of a
participant’s survey answers.
Those who are having trouble with
alcohol or other drugs will learn the
warning signs of addiction along
with the different types of help
available — such as peer recovery
groups and/or professional treatment.
Families and friends will learn about
intervention, peer support groups,
codependency, and the best way to
help loved ones while taking care of
themselves.
Go to aboutmydrinking.org to get started.

Teen Intervene
Each young person experimenting with alcohol and other
drugs comes with unique reasons for using and unique
obstacles to successfully confronting personal behavior.
Hazelden’s Teen Intervene program is designed to provide
education, support, and guidance for youths who have
experienced mild to moderate chemical use. Program
participants include teens, their parents, and professionals
(counselors, teachers, and coaches) who provide guidance.
Teen Intervene offers parents and guardians the opportunity
to learn healthy communication skills and stresses the importance
of establishing family rules surrounding chemical use.
Published Materials
Hazelden’s publishing division
provides intervention curriculum
for professionals, such as Teen
Intervene, and has numerous
books and other resources
available to the general consumer.
Please visit our online bookstore at
hazelden.org/bookstore to find the
latest materials.
The program includes a series of individual and group sessions
for participants. By using individual goals and personalized
feedback, Teen Intervene directly focuses on each young
person’s specific needs.

Treatment
Treatment for addiction and co-occurring disorders
Alcohol and drug addiction treatment
is delivered many ways, depending
on the needs of the individual.
Residential treatment may be
necessary for some, while others
may be able to complete treatment
on an outpatient basis. For most, a
combination of treatment services
provides the best chance for recovery.
Hazelden invented modern addiction treatment.
Our success is based on years of research and
studying what works. We treat each person with
dignity and respect, while providing a safe place
in which to heal.
Our treatment philosophy is based on the recognition that
alcohol and other drug addiction is a disease and that abstinence
is the best way to manage the condition. We approach addiction
treatment in a holistic way, working with mind, body, and spirit
to promote a healthy and happy life.
Each person seeking help at Hazelden comes with a unique personal
history and set of circumstances. Treatment is tailored to ensure
the most effective approach and best opportunity for recovery. An
individual’s alcohol and drug treatment plan is influenced by a number
of factors, including family history, addictive substance(s), gender,
and physical health.
9
Hazelden offers patients a full
continuum of care. Our addiction
treatment services are delivered
by an on-site, multi-disciplinary
team of experts who create individual
plans based on the clinical needs
of clients. A ssessments and Evaluations
Residential Care
At Hazelden, we do not assume that a diagnosis of alcoholism
or other addiction exists when people contact us for help. Our
expert assessment process provides an accurate diagnosis along
with recommendations for follow-up care. Many assessment
options are available, depending on the need of the individual.
Some patients start in a primary
care residential addiction treatment
program. The length of stay varies
based on the clinical needs of the
patient.
For patients with complex recovery
issues, Hazelden offers extended
care programs. These programs
allow for more in-depth time on
special issues, mental health complications, relapse prevention, and
sober living skills. Patients have
time to put their new recovery
skills into practice and develop a
deeper understanding of what they
need to do to maintain recovery.

Separate programming and

patients allows them to stay

process, explore sensitive issues
with peers in a safe and supportive
environment, and strengthen their
fellowship with others in recovery.
Outpatient Care
Hazelden offers many levels
of outpatient treatment care
to support the needs of each
patient’s specific requirements.
Our outpatient programs use
multidisciplinary treatment teams
and individualized treatment plans
that include education, group
therapy and individual work.
On-site living is also an option
at many of our locations.
10
Treating co-occurring disorders
It is very common for those struggling with
alcohol and drug addiction to also have a co-occurring
mental health condition. Hazelden’s psychiatrists,
psychologists, and other mental-health professionals
provide assessments, consultation, counseling
and treatment for co-occurring disorders such as
depression and anxiety. Hazelden’s mental health
services also are of great help to people who have
recently completed treatment and are transitioning
back into everyday home and work life.
Some of the co-occurring difficulties
we treat include:
• Depression
• Anxiety
and stress-related conditions
• Post-traumatic
• Marital
stress
and intimacy issues
• Family
and interpersonal
relationship problems
• Vocational
• Gambling,
adjustment problems
eating disorders or other
compulsive behaviors also are addressed

Specialized Addiction Treatment Programs
For health care professionals
Care providers sometimes have a hard time accepting that they need help. The
Health Care Professionals Program is designed specifically to help health care professionals
recover from alcohol and other drug addiction to regain their lives and careers.
For legal professionals
At Hazelden, we know legal professionals suffer from addiction at nearly twice the
rate of those in any other profession. Our personalized care, unparalleled expertise,
and peer support help attorneys rebuild their lives and preserve the careers they’ve
worked so hard to build.
For traumatic stress sufferers
Substance abuse and trauma disorders are closely linked, as many individuals turn
to alcohol or other drugs to escape the pain of traumatic experiences. Hazelden offers
highly specialized, integrated clinical treatment for addiction and co-occurring
trauma disorders.
For adolescents and young adults
For more than 30 years, Hazelden has helped thousands of adolescents and young
adults get a fresh start on life free from alcohol or other drugs. Our structured yet
nurturing environment encourages personal growth and responsibility in recovery.
Hazelden’s family programs are designed to promote the well-being of those who
live with or care about a family member with an addiction. Through education and
guidance, participants learn they can’t control their loved one’s addiction, but they
can take responsibility for their own health and happiness. Families will find a
renewed sense of hope and a new set of life tools.

Recovery Management
For families and loved ones
Recovery Management
Recovery Management
Completing treatment at Hazelden is only the beginning of getting well.
Addiction is a chronic disease that needs to be managed like any other
chronic illness. Recovery requires a daily commitment to sober living.
Whether in the first month of recovery or the first decade, people can
look to Hazelden for the resources necessary to help maintain freedom
from addiction to alcohol and other drugs.
Our supporting programs and services promote the gains made during initial treatment, reinforce
healthy habits, and help people stay connected in their recovery community. And although there are
no hard and fast rules about length of continuing care after treatment, several studies show that the
longer the duration of aftercare, the better the outcome.
