POSITION: DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL COORDINATOR COMPENSATION: $15/ hour 10 to 25 hours/ week Summer Position (May to August) POSITION SUMMARY Barrie Public Library is seeking an experienced, responsible, and intuitive individual to fill the position of Dragon Boat Festival Coordinator. This individual will be responsible for assisting the Library’s Development Office with special projects relating to the event, such as promotions, planning and logistics. Additionally, the coordinator will act as a Steer leading up to and on festival day. RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE: Assisting Development Office Staff with the coordination of the 2015 Barrie Dragon Boat Festival; including event marketing and promotions; working with event vendors; scheduling team practices; hosting special practices and corporate paddle sessions; organizing volunteers and more. Exercising strong communication lines between the waterfront and festival office. Ensuring all participants have signed their waivers before entering the boat. Displaying confidence and being knowledgeable when managing large groups at and on the water; sizing appropriate PFDs and paddles for participants; teaching the parts of the boat, the paddle, and functional calls; teaching participants proper loading/unloading strategies, giving an off-water safety talk & on-land capsize drill and more. Maintaining a friendly, approachable demeanor. Other duties as assigned. REQUIRED SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES: Possess excellent interpersonal, time management, and communication skills. Able to work comfortably and effectively with a diverse group of staff, volunteers, and the general public on the telephone, in person, and via written correspondence. Comfortable balancing multiple tasks and responsibilities in an organized, efficient, and professional manner. Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and the use of various social media tools (Hootsuite, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram). Able to create fun, engaging videos using iMovie or Windows Movie Maker. Must be comfortable in large bodies of water. Ensure the safety of participants by adhering to water traffic rules and choosing the best possible path at all times throughout summer practices and on Festival Day. Experience in both individual and team settings. Comfortable interacting with others, especially in a large group of people. Ability to engage participants in an appropriate and enjoyable manner. Being able to take control of a situation in the event of an emergency. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: Must have valid First Aid & CPR certification. Must have Official Pleasure Craft Operator Card. Must be returning as a full time student for post-secondary education in fall 2015. Preferably 2 or more years of experience steering. Coaching experience is an asset. Experience, Degree or Diploma in Marketing or Event Planning is considered an asset. A Criminal Record Check, including Vulnerable Sector Screening, is a condition of employment.
