The Lindsay Wildlife Rehabilitation Hospital’s work is focused on California’s native wildlife species. Please follow a few basic guidelines in wildlife rehabilitation and help the hospital save more lives! Keep pet food and water inside, especially at night. Keep ripe fruit picked and refuse off ground. Close any opening in basement or under house to prevent wildlife from building a den. Take time to observe and assess the situation from a distance before thinking that an animal needs help. Fledgling (young) birds spend time on the ground while learning to fly. (Bird parents are usually around to protect and feed.) If you find an animal that needs help, visit our website at lindsaywildlife.org/hospital or call us at (925) 935-1978. Remember to respect and protect wildlife in all its forms. Hospital Story Release Story Western Pond Turtle Earlier this year, the Wildlife Rehabilitation Hospital at Lindsay Wildlife Museum released a western pond turtle in Clayton. This omnivorous reptile is an important part of the California ecosystem. Their diet includes insects as well as small fish, frogs, and vegetation such as algae, lily pads and plant roots. This turtle arrived at the hospital as an adult and had open injuries around her rear ankles, plantar forefeet and tips of the tail. In addition, she had a bright smear of orange paint on her carapace. After an initial examination and treatment, she was placed in an enclosure (without water to avoid infection of her numerous open wounds). Turtles have a slow metabolism and take a longer time to heal than a bird or a mammal. After 4 months of professional medical and meticulous husbandry care by the hospital staff and volunteers, she was successfully released in a pond belonging to our partners at “Save Mount Diablo,” where she was greeted by other pond turtles. lindsaywildlife.org 19 G E T I N V O LV E D Interested in supporting wildlife?
