“Leadership personal training - If you put the
time in, you’ll reap the benefits”
Brenda believes leadership follows the same pattern as
a personal training (PT) session – if you put in the work,
you will be the leader you aspire to be. Of course it can
be tough, but becoming a good leader is not a sprint.
Leadership skills don’t just materialise overnight with
a promotion or a new opportunity – they take time to
develop. You can ‘train’ to be a great leader – you do
have to put in the time, invest in yourself and commit to it,
but the journey can be fantastic. Brenda will draw on her
years of experience as a transformational leader to explore
how you can become “leadership fit”. Discover:
• Vary your routine – Accept challenges, resist getting
comfortable
• Stretch yourself – Embrace opportunities, keep learning
• Lead from the front – Have a go, be authentic, don’t be
afraid of being different

to overcome these barriers and facilitate a smooth
transition. Discuss:
• Understanding the common factors underlying
resistance to change

“Process is just as important as the outcome.
Never discount your past experiences”
In the dynamic public service, leaders are traditionally
evaluated based on positive or negative outcomes.
However, without proper processes in place, the desired
results cannot be achieved. Instead of focusing solely
on outcomes, working and improving on the critical
processes to achieve both short and long term goals will
ultimately set you on the winning path. Reflecting on her
career, Kate will share how her past experiences are her
greatest assets in building her character and preparing
her for leadership success. She will focus on:
• Reflecting on lessons learnt and how to apply them in
your next venture
• Nothing is lost – Every experience is valuable
• Enjoying the process of growth and giving yourself due
credit

Leadership requires on-going personal and professional
growth. Only by taking risks and stepping out beyond your
comfort zone will you be able to test out your strengths and
discover hidden talents. However, the greatest barrier to this
is the fear of failure and lack of self-belief. In this session,
Deb will reflect on her career progression as a leader and
demonstrates how having the courage to take risks can be
the key to a rewarding leadership journey. Discuss:
• Gaining the strength and support to be bold
• Being unafraid of failure – How you can overcome your
fears

“Achieving work-life balance and beyond – Why I
have chosen this path”
For many female leaders, the picture that comes to mind
at the mention of ‘work-life balance’ is juggling between
different responsibilities and commitments revolving around
career and family. For Michelle, there is more to this equation.
In addition to the demands of being a mother of three and an
executive juggling international travel and timezones, she is
on the board of a major national arts organisation, is studying
for her Masters and trying to restore a heritage property
500km away. In this session, Michelle will share her insight,

“Seizing opportunities for career development”
Women make up a significant part of the Public Sector
workforce; however, a large number of female talent still
faces various challenges and barriers to advance into senior
leadership positions. Many others typically fall out of the
workforce over family commitments and responsibilities.
Squadron Leader Samantha Freebairn, a C-17A
Globemaster II pilot, takes a different path. She is the RAAF’s
first female pilot to return to operational flying after maternity
leave, and has since implemented the Graduate Pilot
Scheme (GPS) in an effort to recruit and retain more women
in the Air Force. In this session, she will advise on how to
recognise opportunities and thrive as a leader. Explore:
• Reviving your dreams and don’t stop pursuing them
• Important skills for thriving in non-traditional roles
• Challenges of work-life balance and practical ways to overcome them

ABOUT THE EVENT
The Queensland Government has made progress in improving workforce
diversity in recent years years, with women accounting for about two-thirds
of the workforce. However despite the numbers, women are still significantly
under-represented in senior leadership positions – only approximately 30%
occupy executive level roles. The concept of gender equality is one that can
be achieved; however there are a number of obstacles at both an individual
and organisational level that must first be surmounted.
Recognising the significant value that a diverse workforce contributes to
public service excellence, the Queensland Government has implemented
various measures to reduce barriers and eliminate gender gaps. On a
personal and professional level, women themselves also need to hone critical
skills, demonstrate their knowledge and capabilities, and position themselves
to seize career opportunities to step up into leadership roles.
The Queensland Public Sector Women in Leadership Summit 2015 will
offer an outstanding speaker faculty, sharing their insights and experiences
in order to address the challenges faced by women wishing to advance their
career within the Public Sector. It also presents practical strategies for how
organisations and individuals themselves can navigate these obstacles in
order to promote and support women in senior leadership role.
