Roxanna’s life ~all dimensions ~ is infused with a passion and commitment to
transformation and increasing our awareness and consciousness of how we live
in our bodies, in relationship to each other, the earth, and the divine.
Roxanna describes her background: “I am trained in clinical psychology, Higher Brain
Living®, and various expressive arts modalities, however, I was born an
artist, a healer, and spiritual seeker.
Dr. Rutter holds a doctorate in clinical psychology, a master’s in interdisciplinary creative
arts with an emphasis in sculpture. She studied and practiced Authentic Movement with
Janet Adler, ADTR, one of the pioneers of the form, for 8 years.
Authentic Movement and body-based meditation approaches are foundational in
all of Roxanna’s teachings.
She has facilitated women’s groups and retreats in personal growth and transformation for
over 20 years. “I love creating and holding sacred space;
Studio One-Sixty offers a sacred, highly creative space within which to explore how the
discipline of Authentic Movement (AM) organically evolves with ‘Listening Women’ and
beyond. Deep listening as essential to embodied transformation, is a perfect bridge linking
Listening Women, AM, and the emergent life we discover.”
Description of Authentic Movement
Authentic Movement is a powerful and simple form of self-directed movement.
It is considered a discipline within dance therapy with its roots based in Jung’s
Active Imagination and improvisational dance.
In its simplest form, there is a mover and a witness. The witness holds sacred
space with an open, non-judgmental, and compassionate presence, akin to the mindfulness
of an experienced meditator. The mover, usually with eyes closed to keep focus inward,
allows an impulse or feeling to move her ~ a spontaneous gesture, a bigger breath, a
stillness, a sound . . . . any or all of these are experienced. A natural rhythm and
spontaneous, inspired choreography will often emerge in a group creating a collective
synergy ~ enlivening, so raw and genuine that life itself seems to be born in the present
moment ~ so real it is magical.
Authentic Movement cultivates a contemplative frame of mind, clarity of perception, and
body awareness. The relationship between mover and witness, in moving and being seen by
another, creates a powerful space for healing and transformative experience. When more
experienced movers are taught to become witnesses themselves, they may choose to work
with this discipline in peer groups and dyads.
