I thought to myself, “That’s easy. I just preached a sermon series on seven sayings of Jesus.” What I had in mind, of course was the Lenten series I did on the Seven I Am Sayings of Jesus. They are: I am the bread of life… (John 6:35) I am the light of the world… (John 8:12) I am the door of the sheep. (John 10:7) I am the good shepherd. (John 10:11) I am the resurrection and the life. (John 11:25) I am the way, and the truth, and the life. (John 14:6) I am the vine; you are the branches. (John 15:5) In one of my sermons, I suggested starting the habit of memorizing one Scripture verse per day. These seven verses are a perfect way to begin. There is a verse for each of the first seven days. Another way to use these verses is to repeat them for each day of the week during the Easter season. You might remember that there are seven weeks in Easter. That means you will do 7 x 7, or 49 days. The 50th Day is Pentecost. So you could do: MONDAY - I am the bread of life… TUESDAY – I am the light of the world… WEDNESDAY - I am the door of the sheep. THURSDAY - I am the good shepherd. FRIDAY - I am the resurrection and the life. SATURDAY - I am the way, and the truth, and the life. SUNDAY - I am the vine; you are the branches. There are several other interesting things to note about these seven sayings. One is the connection they have with the First Commandment. Each one reminds us that God is the most important thing in our lives. Nothing comes before Him. Nothing can replace Him. If we have him, we have everything. If we don’t have Him, we have nothing. Another interesting thing is that they fill up all seven days of the week. Too often, we think of Sunday as the day dedicated to God. The other six days are for work, family, recreation, etc… That is not true. Every day is a gift from God and every day should be dedicated to God. You can’t be a one day a week Christian. They also remind us that Jesus is not simply a wise teacher or a great prophet. He is the Savior, the Lord. He doesn’t merely give us bread and light. He doesn’t merely show us the door and lead us to the shepherd. He doesn’t merely tell us about the resurrection and teach us the truth. He IS all of these. As the final I Am saying puts it, “I am the vine; you are the branches.” We only have these things if we are united to Him through the Word and the Sacraments and through faith, the same way a branch is connected to a vine. Finally, they all tell us about life. What kind of life? Resurrection life. Easter life. They tell us how Jesus shares the power of his Resurrection with us and how we begin to enjoy eternal life now. Take some time this Easter Season to meditate on those seven simple verses, and grow closer to Him in faith and love. We cut bottoms and one top and then tied two quilts for next year’s shipment. We have several tops on hand for next month’s meeting, but will need to cut fillers as only one is ready to use. We would welcome some gently used sheets from the congregation, as our supply is depleted. Our next meeting will be Thursday, April 16, from 10:00 a.m. until noon. If you can use a needle, a pair of scissors and/or tie a knot, come join us in this important outreach mission. Rosalie Fanlo The council of LLLC would like to thank Eagle Scout Landal Brown and his fine crew of workers from Troop 513 who in one day moved everything out of the counting room and the cry room, painted both rooms and then moved everything back. This project saved the church hundreds of dollars in labor costs. Thank you for job well done.
