Collect
Almighty God, who through your only-begotten Son Jesus Christ have overcome
death and opened to us the gate of everlasting life: grant that, as by your grace going
before us you put into our minds good desires, so by your continual help we may
bring them to good effect; through Jesus Christ our risen Lord, who is alive and
reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
A reading from Baruch
Baruch 3. 9-15, 33 – 4. 4
Hear the commandments of life, O Israel; give ear, and learn wisdom! Why is it, O
Israel, why is it that you are in the land of your enemies, that you are growing old in
a foreign country, that you are defiled with the dead, that you are counted among
those in Hades? You have forsaken the fountain of wisdom. If you had walked in the
way of God, you would be living in peace for ever. Learn where there is wisdom,
where there is strength, where there is understanding, so that you may at the same
time discern where there is length of days, and life, where there is light for the eyes,
and peace. Who has found her place? And who has entered her storehouses? the one
who sends forth the light, and it goes; he called it, and it obeyed him, trembling; the
stars shone in their watches, and were glad; he called them, and they said, ‘Here we
are!’ They shone with gladness for him who made them. This is our God; no other
can be compared to him. He found the whole way to knowledge, and gave her to his
servant Jacob and to Israel, whom he loved. Afterwards she appeared on earth and
lived with humankind. She is the book of the commandments of God, the law that
endures for ever. All who hold her fast will live, and those who forsake her will die.
Turn, O Jacob, and take her; walk towards the shining of her light. Do not give your
glory to another, or your advantages to an alien people. Happy are we, O Israel, for
we know what is pleasing to God.
Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. Thanks be to God.
Psalm 22. 25-end
25 My praise is of thee in the / great • congre-/gation:
my vows will I perform in the / sight of / them that / fear him.
26 The poor shall / eat • and be / satisfied:
they that seek after the Lord shall praise him; * may your / heart / live for / ever.
27 Let all the ends of the world remember, * and be turned / unto • the / Lord:
and let all the families of the / nations / worship • be-/fore him.
28 For the dominion / is the / Lord's:
and he is the / Governor • a-/mong the / nations.
29 As for all them that sleep in the earth, * / how • shall they / worship him:
all they that go down into the dust, * / how • shall they / kneel be-/fore him?
30 But my life shall be preserved in his sight, * and my / children • shall / worship
him:
they shall tell of the Lord unto the / gener-/ations • to / come,
31 And unto a people that shall be born shall they de-/clare his / righteousness:
that / he hath / brought • it to / pass.
A reading from Acts of the Apostles
Acts 8. 26-40
Then an angel of the Lord said to Philip, ‘Get up and go towards the south to the
road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.’ (This is a wilderness road.) So he got
up and went. Now there was an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of the Candace,
queen of the Ethiopians, in charge of her entire treasury. He had come to Jerusalem
to worship and was returning home; seated in his chariot, he was reading the prophet
Isaiah. Then the Spirit said to Philip, ‘Go over to this chariot and join it.’ So Philip
ran up to it and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah. He asked, ‘Do you understand
what you are reading?’ He replied, ‘How can I, unless someone guides me?’ And he
invited Philip to get in and sit beside him. Now the passage of the scripture that he
was reading was this: ‘Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter, and like a lamb
silent before its shearer, so he does not open his mouth. In his humiliation justice
was denied him. Who can describe his generation? For his life is taken away from
the earth.’ The eunuch asked Philip, ‘About whom, may I ask you, does the prophet
say this, about himself or about someone else?’ Then Philip began to speak, and
starting with this scripture, he proclaimed to him the good news about Jesus. As they
were going along the road, they came to some water; and the eunuch said, ‘Look,
here is water! What is to prevent me from being baptized?’ He commanded the
chariot to stop, and both of them, Philip and the eunuch, went down into the water,
and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord
snatched Philip away; the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing.
But Philip found himself at Azotus, and as he was passing through the region, he
proclaimed the good news to all the towns until he came to Caesarea.
Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. Thanks be to God.
Listen to the Gospel of Christ according to Saint John
John 15. 1-8
Glory to you, O Lord
‘I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine-grower. He removes every branch in
me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more
fruit. You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to you. Abide
in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides
in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the
branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from
me you can do nothing. Whoever does not abide in me is thrown away like a branch
and withers; such branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you
abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will be
done for you. My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become my
disciples.
This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

GLASS QUILT EXHIBITION
Installed last weekend, the Glass Quilt project started in St. David’s, Lent 2014 and
has visited all six of the Dioceses of Wales. It has sought to provide a welcome to
our visitors, appealing particularly to young families and children, and offers a new
perspective from which to appreciate our wonderful Cathedrals. On its journey
around Wales it has been collecting prayers written on luggage labels.
The Glass Quilt is a meditation piece, the woven glass screen has 49 stained glass
roundels. These roundels are Bezant crosses (from the parable of the Lost Coin) and
together form a Jerusalem cross. The Jerusalem cross speaks of the four ancient sites
of Christianity and pilgrimage – Alexandria, Jerusalem, Antioch and Rome – and
like all crosses, reminds us that we are a Resurrection People.

In order to carry on the work of the Church in and through this Cathedral Parish, not
least the upkeep of this magnificent building, we rely substantially on your generous
giving. A significant proportion of our funds is raised through Christian Stewardship
among our regular worshippers.
If you are a taxpayer, we invite you to give by means of Gift Direct (Giving With a
Direct Debit), or other form of Gift Aided donation. This means we can claim the tax
back and so your donation increases by 25%. We are enormously grateful to all who
do this as an expression of their gratitude for God’s great goodness.
