Sunday 9 November 2014: THE SECOND SUNDAY OF THE KINGDOM
REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY
Collect
Eternal God, our maker and redeemer, grant us, with all the faithful departed, the
sure benefits of your Son's saving passion and glorious resurrection that, in the last
day, when you gather up all things in Christ, we may with them enjoy the fullness of
your promises; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
A reading from the Wisdom of Solomon
The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment will ever touch
them. In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died, and their departure was
thought to be an affliction, and their going from us to be their destruction; but they
are at peace. For though in the sight of men they were punished, their hope is full of
immortality. Having been disciplined a little, they will receive great good, because
God tested them and found them worthy of himself; like gold in the furnace he tried
them, and like a sacrificial burnt offering he accepted them. In the time of their
visitation they will shine forth, and will run like sparks through the stubble. They
will govern nations and rule over peoples, and the Lord will reign over them forever.
Those who trust in him will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him in
love, because grace and mercy are upon his elect, and he watches over his holy ones.
Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church.

A reading from St Paul’s First Epistle to the Church in Corinth
Lo, I tell you a mystery! We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a
moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound,
and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. For this
perishable nature must put on the imperishable, and this mortal nature must put on
immortality. When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and this mortal puts on
immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: "Death has been
swallowed up in victory." " O death, where is thy victory?, O death, where is thy
sting?" The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to
God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

rise again in the resurrection at the last day." Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection
and the life; he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and whoever
lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?" She said to him, "Yes,
Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, he who is coming into the
world."
This is the Gospel of the Lord.

talking about the work of John Prichard and John Pollard Seddon and the stained
glass in the Cathedral and other churches in Wales.

ADVENT BOOKS
This years Advent books are now on sale in the Cathedral shop. "Companions on the
Bethlehem Road" by Rachel Goulding (Deputy Editor of the Church Times) looks at
the coming of the Christ Child with the help of much loved poets, while "Longing,
Waiting, Believing" by Rodney Holder (recently retired Course Director of the
Faraday Institute for Science and Religion at Cambridge University, theologian,
pastor and scientist) takes the Old Testament prophecies of the birth of Jesus as a
starting point for a devotional but fresh look at familiar passages, right through to
Epiphany.
“LIVING FAITH” COURSE
Members will be pleased to hear that the Course should resume after Christmas with
Module 2 on the New Testament. Sandra Birdsall will again lead the studies and
new members are warmly invited to join. Details of time, place and other
arrangements will follow in the New Year.
