ELECTION OF STANDING COMMITTEES OF THE LOCAL
One organizational task in planning for the coming year is to elect members of the Standing
Committees of the Local. Standing Committee members are elected in the spring so they are ready
to start their work in September. The election occurs at the May 27, 2015 meeting of the Council of
School Representatives. Active members of the Local are eligible to serve on any of the following
committees: (Please see the reverse for a description of the mandate and the number of meetings
that require attendance.)

Donations Committee (5 members elected by Council + Vice President Finance serving as

The Local is all of us, and is successful to the extent that we each contribute our talents. Please
seriously consider volunteering your services to one of these committees for next year. Committee
membership does not carry over from one year to the next. For your name to appear on the
election ballot going to Council, it must be submitted on the form printed below. Forms are
available on the Local’s website local37.teachers.ab.ca . If you have questions about any of the
committees, please call the Local’s office (780-455-2164). Completed forms can be faxed
(780-453-1407), emailed ([email protected]), sent on Board truck or mailed to the Local’s office
(401, 11010 142 St, Edmonton, AB T5N 2R1) by Friday, May 22, 2015. NOTE: You will receive an

STANDING COMMITTEE MEETINGS
Most Standing Committees of the Local meet after school from 4:30 – 6:00 pm.
COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE is responsible for developing Local internal communications
including member engagement and leadership development, developing Local communications to
members such as ads, press releases, newsletters and election information, ensuring that all
communications conform to the goals of the Executive and Alberta Teachers’ Association policy,
liaise with other standing committees when needed for development of materials such as brochures,
and developing a Local publication which shall be published on a regular basis.
(Meetings: 8 - 10 per year)
DONATIONS COMMITTEE reviews requests and the needs of various charitable organizations, and
administers annual disbursements from the EDMONTON PUBLIC TEACHERS’ CHARITY TRUST
FUND to specific agencies. The Fund is accumulated through voluntary payroll deductions and
bequests, and in 2014 amounted to approximately $234,200.
(Meetings: 2 - 3 per year)
EDUCATIONAL ISSUES COMMITTEE investigates and makes recommendations, through the
Executive, on educational matters which are referred to it or which it deems to be of importance.
Recent activities of the committee included work in collaboration with Provincial ATA in support of
the recently released Digital Reporting and Assessment Tools report, as well as publication of
information on “Did You Know” topics such as Preparing for a Substitute Teacher, Section 27 (2) of
the School Act, Teachers and Teacher Assistants, and Teachers and Technology.
(Meetings: 3 - 5 per year)
FINANCE COMMITTEE reviews the Local’s revenues, expenditures, audited financial statements,
and prepares the Local’s Annual Budget for approval by Council. The Committee also prepares
recommendations for Council on all proposed expenditures in excess of the approved budget.
(Meetings: Monthly)
POLITICAL ENGAGEMENT COMMITTEE attempts to raise awareness about important educational
issues by encouraging teachers to become politically active, organizing the Local’s activities during
trustee and provincial elections, etc.
(Meetings: 8 – 10 per year)
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE assesses the PD needs of the membership,
maintains liaisons with the ATA, EPSB, and other agencies offering PD programs, gathers and
distributes information about PD opportunities, and facilitates programs and activities which enable
teachers to improve their teaching practice.
(Meetings: 8 - 10 per year)
SERVICE TO MEMBERS COMMITTEE administers the Local’s Members’ Benefit Fund and hosts
seminars related to maternity and adoption, retirement and financial planning. It sponsors sessions
for teachers on disability leave.
(Meetings: 5 - 6 per year)
SOCIAL COMMITTEE plans and hosts the various social functions of the Local including Teachers’
Time-Out, the New Teacher Induction and Welcome Night for New Teachers, and the Retiring
Teachers’ Banquet.

SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS’ COMMITTEE represents the interests of substitute teachers, plans and
convenes the substitute teachers’ General Meetings, prepares and presents submissions to the
Economic Policy Committee, and promotes professional development of substitute teachers. The
Substitute Teachers’ Committee will be elected at the May 26, 2015 Substitute Teachers’
General Meeting.
