frustrated in a meeting? Or unable
to speak up and say what you

Two neighbouring Big Local areas
have been getting 100+ people out
of their homes on winters
evenings, making new friends and
finding out about Big Local.
The transforming meetings
approach has the capacity to
ensure that every voice is heard,
every decision is sharp – and time
is saved.

Tell your story: recording
change in Big Local areas
This workshop will be an
introduction to the multi-media
evaluation of Big Local areas.
How? They started a community
cinema at the local school which
owns a projector and screen that
often goes un-used in the
evenings. Screenings of Frozen
(sing-along!) and Brassed Off
have been packed, and families
get an affordable night out on their
doorsteps.
This will be an opportunity to:

be involved in making a short
film and podcast
see a film of Big Local media
to date
find out more about Our
Bigger Story, which will be
recording change in Big Local
areas.

Setting things up to last
Fresh Horizons is a social
enterprise in Huddersfield. They
started in 2002 with two members of
staff and now employ almost 70
people locally delivering a range of
services, with a turnover of £1.25m.
Fresh Horizons works by bringing
people together and inspiring them
to take hold of new opportunities for
jobs and learning, community
assets and enterprises.

Margolis Wheel is a problemsolving technique where people
can help each other to come up
with solutions to the issues that
they face.

Creating a community hub
Reviewing your Big Local plan
Greatfield Big Local is turning a
disused school building into a
community hub. To start they are
taking the building on for five
years, so that they can make sure
it works for the partnership and
wider community before
considering a formal asset transfer.

happening in it, the relationships

Star People is an additional source
of funding and support for Big
Local areas. Star People know
their local area, the challenges and
opportunities and have a great
idea to benefit their community.
We call these people social
entrepreneurs. Find out how UnLtd
support create a culture of
entrepreneurship within areas, as
well as support links between Star
People, Big Local partnerships and
other local and regional partners.

Digital inclusion
Woodlands Big Local is now
running the local library, which
includes all the usual services
you’d expect, along with delivering
careers and employment support
through a worker.

many people locally not having
access to the internet is adding to
high levels of deprivation in the
area.
In this workshop you’ll hear how
they did it and tips for other areas
thinking about taking on an asset
or community service.

Digital inclusion is a core part of
Tang Hall’s Big Local plan. They
are working to identify how many
people are excluded from using the
internet in their area and how they
can best address this.
