We hope it is official! Has spring finally
arrived at Lockview School? As usual,
there is plenty to be excited about. Our
junior basketball teams are in full swing,
intermediate badminton is starting and
track & field season is quickly approaching. While the weather has taken a turn
for the better it can still be unpredictable. Please make sure that our children
are prepared for outside play. Layering
clothes is a great way to prepare for the
temperature swings and outdoor shoes
are a must. It will take some time for our
field to dry and harden. A pair of outdoor and indoor shoes will ensure that
our school remains mud-free!
dangerous time of year, as students have
forgotten to be cautious on roads, and
crossing streets, and drivers have to
adjust to having children playing on the
streets again. Let’s all work together to
keep this spring safe, and fun for all!

Share the joys of summer
with a Fresh Air child!
Fresh Air summers are filled with children
running barefoot through the grass, gazing at star-filled
skies or swimming for the first time. Join our New York
City host families who will host Fresh Air children at their
summer homes next summer, and share the beauty of your
community with a Fresh Air child!
The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency,
has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8
million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Each summer, over 4,000 inner-city children visit suburban, rural and small town communities
across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada
through The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family
Program. Fresh Air children are boys and girls, from six to
18 years old, who live in New York City. Children on firsttime visits are six to 12 years old and stay for one or two
weeks. Children who are reinvited by host families may
continue with The Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and can
enjoy extended trips. Over 65 percent of all children are
reinvited to stay with their host families, year after year.
For more information on hosting a Fresh Air child at your
summer home, please contact Tina Mayne at 905-9840290 or visit The Fresh Air Fund online at

If you do NOT wish your child to participate in the dental screening.
If your child is not in one of the targeted grades and you would like him/her to participate.

Baby Teeth are Important!
A message from your public health nurse
Did you know: Baby Teeth are Very Important!
Tooth decay is the number one chronic disease of children. Tooth decay can lead to pain, infection,
difficulties eating, speech problems, self-esteem issues, decrease school attendance and poor overall health.
Niagara Region Public Health (NRPH) screens approximately 25,000 students each year in elementary
schools
38% of these students have tooth decay, which is unacceptably high
Baby teeth are important! Early preventive care is critical in reducing the likelihood of your child developing
painful and serious health problems later in life.
Fluoride is not added into our water supply. Therefore, it is recommended that all residents brush their
teeth twice daily with fluoridated toothpaste as soon as the first baby tooth erupts (birth to three
years – rice grain size portion, three years and older – pea-size portion of fluoride toothpaste)
Floss your child’s teeth daily until age eight
Ensure your child eats a healthy diet and limits sugary drinks and snacks (ex. fruit roll-ups, gummies and
juice boxes)
Children should visit at dentist every year starting at their first birthday to prevent problems from starting
Fluoride varnish and sealant applications are very effective in preventing tooth decay
NRPH has free programs and preventive services to assist children and youth in getting the dental health care
they need. For more information please call the Dental Line at 905-688-8248 or 888-505-6074, ext. 7399.

The Leopards’ Lair
Junior Girls’ and Junior Boys’ Basketball
Our junior girls basketball season is now underway. We are very excited to have some new and returning players this
year. The leopards have been training hard for the tough competition in our area.
Practising three times a week to improve our skill and set plays has helped us start the season off on a positive note.
The team plays their regular season and playoffs throughout April. Check out the Lockview calendar and come cheer
our leopards on!
Team members are: Evanthia P, Emma H, Brooke B, Jasmin H, Abby M, Tate L, Ireland H, Natalie B, Destany S, Rylee R,

DSBN Robotics Competition
On Tuesday March 3rd, 2015, two teams of junior and intermediate
students attended the annual DSBN Robotics Competition held at
Club Roma. In teams of 3-4 members, students were presented
with 5 different sporting challenges inspired by the Pan Am
Games: archery, boxing, canoe slalom, shot put, and weight lifting.
Congratulations to one of our junior teams who placed first overall
in the competition and to two of our intermediate teams for
placing first and third overall. We also celebrate the other teams
who placed in individual challenges and showed great professionalism and collaboration throughout the day. Our junior Leopards
include: Hudson H., Ireland H., Tate L., Carter M., Wyatt P., Matthew R., Rylee R., Tye S., & J.J. W. Our intermediate Leopards were:
Brianna A., Evan C., Blair F., Kailey H., Darren J., Max L., Taneal L.,

PALS Update
The PALS leaders hosted an entertaining Lip Sync Battle for intermediate students, some of whom performed at our
March assembly. A few teacher teams also showed off their lip syncing skills as well.
The PALS team has also recently purchased some phys. ed. equipment including inflatable cage balls which are sure
to be a hit with all students during phys. ed. classes and special events. Great job, team!

TLC Fun Fair Planning Meeting Date
Message from TLC Council
Stephanie Damiano, Lawrence McLean,
Francie Davidson, Melissa Shaw
Finally Spring is HERE! It was a long, cold
winter, and we are glad to finally see the end
of snow in sight! The TLC want to thank the
AMAZING families of Lockview for
supporting our Little Caesars Pizza Kit
fundraiser. We raised $1370! That money will
go towards our year end Fun Fair, which we
are thinking will be the first or second week
of June. If you are interested in helping out
or have some ideas for the Fun Fair please
come out to our next meeting at the end of
this month or check out and comment on the
TLC Facebook Page. Also in the planning
stages are the Dance A Thon, which will likely
take place in May. Keep an eye out for those
pledge sheets in your lil’ one’s backpack. It
will be a great day of fun and physical
activity! TLC volunteers will also be out at the
Track and Field events this spring offering
drinks to our athletes. As always, we invite
all parents to attend the School Council and
Fun Fair planning Meetings. The next one will
be on Tuesday, April 28th, 2015. Hope to see
you there!
Please mark your calendars, come, and join us
for the upcoming TLC Meeting. We welcome
and encourage all parents to attend. It is a great
way to know what is happening at the school,
meet other parents and get involved.

Kindergarten students were
exploring shapes last week.–
hunting throughout the school for
circles, squares and rectangles.
The students couldn’t wait to put
their new iPads to work! They
created Picollages of the shapes
they “collected.”
In structures time, some students
continued to notice shapes! They
all enjoyed using yummy marshmallows and toothpicks as building materials.
This year, math is a school learning focus for Lockview staff and students. Together we are
exploring through problem solving, reasoning and playful inquiry in order to deepen our
understanding and build our skills.
To give you a “peek inside” our classrooms, we will be posting photos of our activities in the
monthly newsletter, on our SIP bulletin board (across from the office), and on Twitter!
Follow us at #LeopardMath to stay in the loop!
