(PLUS BONUS DONATION) FROM MILLER FARMS NURSERY DRAWING JUNE 13,2015 6: 30 pm The Herd’s Word May 201 5 Page 2 From the Administrator Greetings fellow members, As they have in the past, many of our dedicated brothers have rallied their forces to work very hard to prepare firewood and deliver it to several of our community’s elderly folks. These brothers don’t make a big deal out of their service; they just show up and do the job. Our incoming Governor, Danny Vazquez has listed all the names of the volunteers in his first letter to the lodge in this newsletter. This is what it is to be a Moose member. Giving without expecting anything in return except the smiles of gratitude they receive from the recipients. Speaking of dedicated brothers, I have to offer my thanks to our outgoing Governor, Larry Connolly for his devotion to making our lodge a better place and through his perseverance, has helped us achieve greater recognition in the Moose community. Larry is a faithful advocate for the following of Moose General Laws and continues to help us clarify our larger mission as fraternity brothers in the Loyal Order of Moose. He is also a helpful friend. Recently, just a few nights before he was due to perform; I received a phone call from James Henry, our popular Karaoke entertainer. He apologized that he was calling so close to Karaoke night, but that something had come up and he would have to be out of town, so he couldn’t do his usual third Friday night performance. Yikes! I thought. What will I do now? James has been such a popular draw for our Karaoke nights and I didn’t know anyone else who could jump in and do the high quality job that we have become used to with James. I asked him if he could recommend someone to fill in. He told me about Chris Clay and said that if he were in my position, Chris would be the guy to get, if possible. So, I called Chris who said he’d be glad to come that night and do his Karaoke show with lights, etc. So, we made the arrangements and he went on. Since that evening, I have had a number of conversations with members who were there and all the feedback was very positive; they really enjoyed his show. Because of the great turnouts we’ve had on Karaoke nights, I have arranged to add one more Karaoke night each month. So now, we’ll have Chris Clay on the First Friday of the month and James Henry on his usual Third Friday of each month. These evenings have brought in many new guests who have subsequently gone on to join our lodge. I would encourage all members to invite guests to join us for events like Karaoke or some of our other great lodge activities. After they’ve been here, most people find this a very friendly and enjoyable place and we will continue to sign up new members. Yours in Moose service, Dave Durbin Administrator Special Events this month include: Cinco de Mayo Mexican dinner, Softball tryouts and practice, Open House from 1:00 – 4:00 pm in the lodge park to celebrate our new trailer. (Flyer posted) A raffle for a $100.00 gift certificate from Miller st Farms will start May 1 . Kim and Leslie are doing the Moose grill every Monday and Wednesday and are doing a fabulous job. Thanks ladies for all of your hard work and dedication. Thank you, Pam Harrison, Publication Linda Wright 3/11/42 to 4/6/15 Our thoughts and prayers to Linda Wrights family and friends at this difficult time. We will miss you Linda. Linda joined our lodge in 1987 and was involved for many years helping in the office and in the lodge itself. There will be a Celebration of Life for Linda at the lodge on May 17th at 2:00. This is a potluck so please bring your special dish. Also to the family and friends of Carol Baldosser who passed away on March 30, 2015. Carol was a member of our lodge for several years. RIP Carol, you are missed by all of us. Get well wishes to Dennis Emmons. The Herd’s Word May 201 5 Page 3 From our new Governor Greetings to all Lodge members, First let me introduce myself, I am Danny Vazquez your new 2015-2016 LOOM 208 Governor. It is a pleasure to be able to serve as your new Governor. I would like to give a big thank you to Larry Connolly for the great job he did for 2014-2015 as our Governor. Second of all I would like to thank the wood splitting crew. They worked hard to get the job done so our seniors can stay warm throughout the winter months. Thanks to Mitch Williams, Ian Hokombs, Dennis Lytle, Tooter Thompson, Larry Connolly, Loren Waterman, Danny Whorton, Larry Hoerner, Aaron Reel and many more. Thank you to Larry Eaton and Mauro Battilocchi for the use of your log splitter and Boyd, the Manager at Thomas Home Center. All of the wood goes to seniors in our community. We would like to see more members getting involved in all the good things we do as Moose members for our community and our lodge. Sincerely, Danny Vazquez From our former Governor Hello All Lodge 208 members: Let's get the unpleasant news out of the way first: The Lobster Scholarship Dinner has been canceled due to a lack of financial support. It costs over $2,000.00 to put this dinner on and it has been possible in the past with support from members who have stepped up to help our graduating students with scholarship grants. Last year this Lodge was able to award four $1,000.00 to worthy students. So, if you were planning to attend this year’s dinner, please consider donating the money you would have spent on dinner to the Lodge Scholarship fund. Thank you for your support for our students. Don't forget to renew your memberships. The Lodge will very shortly be installing new key locks that will use your membership card to open the door. If your dues are in arrears the door won't open for you! Please continue your generous support of the food barrels. The food this Lodge donates to our local food bank goes a long ways in assisting our neighbors and community members. A great big shout out to our wood crews for all their hard work in preparing for next year’s donations. A special thank you to Don Harling and the Beau Pre Golf Course for their donation of trees that we are using to cut into firewood. Remember - new Lodge officers start their terms this month. Please support them as they assume their duties. It takes a lot of time and effort to keep our Lodge running smoothly. Lastly, I want to thank the members and officers for their support and encouragement during my year in office. There have been some bumps along the way, but mostly it has been a very positive year for our Lodge. We have received our 5 Star Award from Moose International for all our efforts in helping Mooseheart and Moosehaven, our community, our lodge, and members. It has been a true privilege for me to have the honor of serving as your governor. We have a great Lodge with remarkable members; let's all continue to move forward to serve as true Moose members. With Great Respect, Larry Connolly The Herd’s Word May 201 5 Page 4 Fellow Co-Workers, By the time you read this I’ll be your new Senior Regent of the WOTM Chapter 1114. I will do my best to increase our membership and financial status. Check the back part of this Newsletter for the listing of our new Officers and Committee Chairmen and welcome them in. We all cannot fulfill our duties without your help in making our Chapter strong and growing. Come see anyone of us with your ideas and offer to help if you can. I’d like to give a BIG SHOUT OUT to our past Senior Regent, Jeanne Perkins, for her year. We’ve had a lot of ups and downs this last year but we made it through. Thanks Jeanne! Looking forward to working with you this next year. Reminder: The difference between the men and the women APPLICATIONS. We have the correct ones for each behind the bar. The women have a notice attached stating the new women members need to attend an Orientation to be accepted and enrolled into our Chapter and receive their Key Card to the doors. She will be called, so please have a good phone number, with date(s) of the next Orientation Meeting(s). This does not take long so PLEASE make it. After attending their Application will then be approved and mailed off to Moose International to receive their MEMBERSHIP CARD. Women can now enroll a man-same for the men. If enrolling a man, a man member needs to endorse it - woman member needs to endorse a woman. I have to obtain 5 new members within my year so I would appreciate your help to achieve this. Thank you Detach and hang our Calendar on your fridge. We have A LOT of great activities and meals lined up this month. If you have a favorite family meal you’d like to share, PLEASE let one of us know and we will be happy to sign you up for a Thursday Night dinner and show you the ropes of the kitchen and process. Thank you in advance. Sincerely, Marilyn Salazar, Senior Regent A Note to Danny: Congratulations on being Chili King again and double congratulations on your being elected as new Governor. ~ Jackie (prior WOTM Secretary and Treasurer) Co-Worker of the month is HAZEL LYTLE THANK YOU so much for all of your hard work arranging and being there for our ladies orientation nights and increasing our membership. Linda Wright 3/11/42 to 4/6/15 We will have a Celebration of Life for Linda at the lodge on Sunday, May 17th at 2:00 pm. Linda was a wife, mother, grandmother and also became a mother figure to many in our lodge. Linda joined our lodge in 1987. She is loved by all. So far, we've filled two collection barrels with canned goods and other non-perishable foods; about 150 pounds worth of food to help feed the needier members of our community. A phone inquiry was made to the Resource Center today, to ask what which foods were most needed at this time. The answer was that PEANUT BUTTER is something that is always needed. Another item is canned fruit with the pop-off lids. Pasta is not as easy for folks to prepare as many are without cooking facilities. Can- openers are needed as well, since most of us donate canned goods such as beans, vegetables, canned meat, etc. The support for this ongoing collection has grown as more of our Lodge members have found out about the program. Your thoughtfulness and generosity has helped many kids and adults. Let's keep it going. Each time you're heading for the Lodge, take a minute and think about something you might bring to donate. The collection barrel(s) will be found near the door to the kitchen, inside the social quarters. Thanks, fellow LOOM and WOTM brothers and sisters! Our own Ted Nelson placed second in a field of twenty four other district leaders in that competition. Larry Connolly, in a field of Two Hundred and Twelve other Administrators and Governors, was the last man standing in a trivia competition involving Amendments, Constitution, and Bylaws of Moose International... and I have told some of you that the man “Knows the Book.” ~Mitch Williams Partnerships that might have been Over the years Mooseheart has had some associations with some folks of notoriety and fame. Among those of notoriety was one Father Edward Flanagan, who is credited as the founder of Boys Town, an institution in Nebraska. Flanagan visited the Principals at Mooseheart, and walked away with the unusual education innovation of mixing academics with vocational training – and did this prior to intake of his first boys in 1917. Remember – Mooseheart was dedicated in 1913. Flanagan visited Mooseheart in 1916 and educated himself prior to opening Boys Town the next year. In 1964 Jerry Lewis visited Mooseheart for two days – preparation for his work with the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Danny Thomas was one of the biggest men in television in 1963. In the previous year Thomas had founded and chartered St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis. In his early years in entertainment Thomas had vowed to himself that if he ever became a big success that he would open a shrine to St. Jude Thaddeus, a patron saint of lost causes. Thomas had recently joined the Moose, and he appeared as a big-name draw for the International Moose Convention that year. Thomas was motivated to get his children's research hospital off the ground quickly. He reasoned that some kind of partnership would be mutually beneficial. In 1966 Thomas approached the Moose Principals and asked the Moose Fraternity to take on St. Jude Children's Research Hospital as a permanent entity like Mooseheart and Moosehaven. After consideration of the matter, Moose Supreme Council opted not to take a chance on St. Jude's out of concern that fraternity resources could become too diluted in the process. Thomas parted as a friend but did not make another appearance at an International Moose Convention. Although these partnerships never solidified, all was and is as it should have been and the entities have flourished independently, providing a great deal of service to their fellows.
