The Herd’s Word
From the Administrator
Greetings fellow members,
April 201 5
Page 2
The tremendous turnout for the Dave McConkey “Celebration of Life” was a heartwarming
experience as was the extremely moving and powerful presentation by the Mad River Community
Veterans Honor Guard. The members of Dave’s family were very complimentary to our lodge for
hosting their special event. I never knew Dave personally, but I was impressed with the outpouring
of love and happiness expressed by those attendees who got up to share some of their past experiences and stories about
Dave. He was obviously a fun guy. We were honored that the family chose us to host the memorial.
I have to mention the amazing effort put forth by Fred Jewell, who worked tirelessly to organize the event. He did
everything from replacing tile in the men’s room to coordinating the food preparation. He was able to assemble an
amazing team to put on this very successful tribute to our brother. All the people Fred brought together are to be
commended on their generosity and good spirit. Thanks to all of you!
I will be attending the California/Nevada Moose association Mid-year Conference in Reno March 26-29. I had not yet been
to a conference and am looking forward to going. I expect to attend workshops and talks which are designed to help lodge
officers be more effective in their positions. The more I learn, the better I’ll be able to serve our lodge.
Our highly successful firewood deliveries to seniors moved one of the recipients to write a letter to the Mad River Union
expressing her thanks to us for the good service. Our ongoing program has gotten us many compliments and shows our
community that Moose cares for our local friends as well as Mooseheart and Moosehaven. Also, Governor Larry Connolly
recently informed me that our generous members have to date, donated close to one-ton of food to the McKinleyville
community Family Resource Center. Well done, brothers and sisters!
Sincerely,
Dave Durbin
Administrator
I would like to thank everyone for being patient with me regarding the newsletter. Sometimes you may find a
wrong time or date and I apologize for this as I know it is important that they be correct. I am working on
having someone proof the newsletter before it goes out for print. There is a lot of information to enter and
sometimes I may not catch my own mistakes so again thank you.

From our Governor
Greetings to all Lodge Members:
Let me start this article by thanking the members who have been working very
hard the last couple of weeks in cleaning up our building and grounds. The
Lodge is looking very spiffy and nice right now. Let’s try and keep it that way;
don't throw trash on the ground or leave garbage on the tables, folks have made
a real effort to clean up and we can all help by doing our part.
Tommy and his crew did a great job with St. Patty’s Day dinner; everyone seemed to be having a good
time.
Attention all members of the LOOM: Elections will be held on April 8, 2015 at the regular General
members meeting starting at 6:00pm. Please plan on attending to cast your vote. Installation of
new officers will take place on Sunday April 26, 2015; 3:00pm for the women and 4:00pm for the
men. Come and welcome your new officers for next year.
Donations have not been for coming for the Lobster dinner for scholarships to the extent that is
needed. I will let everyone know if we are going to be to have this event by the end of April.
Fraternally Yours,
Larry Connolly
A Big Thank you from a lady in our
community, thanks again guys and thank
you to many more who are not in the
picture!!!

Greetings to all LOOM and Chapter members,
First of all, a BIG THANK YOU to Joanie Farris for hosting the "Johnny Cash Casino Party!!!! Everyone had a lot
of fun and there were many winners. We also thank the dealers and all who made this a very successful fundraiser for the
College of Regents scholarship fund. We look forward to doing this again in the years coming; this will give everyone time
to save up their money.
In the coming months, we will be having PATTI-Melt Fridays by Kim. Stop in between 11 and 2pm and try
one. Kim is seriously thanking of re-opening the Moose Grill on Mondays and Wednesdays. Watch for flyers.
A special THANK YOU to Tommy V. for all the dinners he has been cooking for the WOTM. We are so very
lucky to have his support.
Remember we still have 2 raffles going. One is for 2 $100.00 for the three different eating places and they will be
drawn at Birthday Dinner on 11 April.
The other is for "Mr. Moose Bag", which is designed by a member and hand-crafted locally. This is a one of a kind piece of
Moose history.
There will be a Sock-Hop on April 4th. This fund raiser will be hosted by Kim Hines, Ways and Means
Committee. Watch for the flyers to learn what the prizes will be. We will be offering hot dogs or cheeseburgers and other
sorted goodies to eat
Lastly, the installation of new officers for the LOOM and Chapter will be held of Sunday, April 26 at 3:00 and 4:00.
It will also be a potluck, so bring your favorite dish or dessert.
Almost missed thanking Betty S., Hazel L. and Roxanne E. for their hard work in putting on the Silent Auction and
next year there will be a bigger turn out.
This is my last letter as Senior Regent, hard to believe it has been a year and OH WHAT FUN IT HAS BEEN!!!!!!
Sincerely, Jeanne L. Perkins
SR. Regent....
Joanie Farris is our co-worker of the Month. Many, many thanks to you!!!!
Message from Youth Involvement Committee Chairman:
I would like to say thank you to everyone who made our annual dessert auction such a success. A special
thank you goes to all my teammates: Kim Hines, Dawn Lytle, Leslie Pace and Erin Amott. And none of this
would have been possible without all the members who donated their yummy creations. Also, thank you to the
bidders who made it all so exciting
Cara Thomas,

Message from Leeaha Vasquez:
As my first year at Pacific University is coming to an end, I am amazed and grateful for the opportunity to
study at such a wonderful institution. I have become even more independent and strong-willed than ever before, if
that's even possible. It is at Pacific University that I have discovered my major and passions- International Studies
and Sociology. Through International Studies I hope to become involved with the United Nations or European
Union, and I would like to use Sociology to help promote social equality and awareness for environmental and
social problems. I have also joined a sorority, Theta Nu Alpha, which focuses on women's empowerment and
feminism. However, it is important to stress that Theta Nu Alpha does not adhere to the stereotypes of collegiate
Greek life. I am also pleased to say that I am still participating in music; I am a member of both the Symphonic
Band and the Philharmonic Orchestra. I absolutely love my school, and am very happy with my experience so far
and wouldn't trade it for anything.
Sincerely,
Leeaha Vazquez

Dear Lodge Family,
I’m very thankful for the wonderful members of our lodge who helped get my
Johnny Cash Casino Bash off and running. It was a huge success, making close
to $1500.00 towards our scholarship fund. Thank you dealers, bartenders, waitresses and players
for your support.
I am feeling some good vibes in the lodge these days. The men and women are once again working
together for the good of our lodge home. Minor, but needed changes are being by our
Administrator and new people are standing up and taking positions of officers and committee
chairman. I am looking forward to giving my assistance whenever needed, so please don’t hesitate
to ask.
Thank you,
Joanie Farris
College of Regents Chairwoman
A word from our Recorder,
First of all, I would like to thank all of you who came to the Betty Chinn Foundation, Mooseheart
and Moosehaven fundraiser. Without you these activities could not be as successful as they are,
and all too often we forget about you, SO THANK YOU!
I also want to thank the wonderful guys that I had the opportunity to work with; Kent
Swartzlander, Loren Waterman and his son Logan, Brian Battilocchi and Mitch Williams. YOU ALL
DID A GREAT JOB AND A JOY TO WORK WITH, THANK YOU MUCH! Also to Cindy Watt and
Jackie Sheggaby for serving and to Nancy Hogan for taking care of the orders. THANK YOU
MUCH GALS!
On a less thankful note, when the leftovers we had saved to be used for an additional donation
for Mooseheart/Moosehaven and Betty Chinn, they mysteriously disappeared. Needless to say,
this put a damper on what this fundraiser was supposed to be. Remember why we are here, it is
to give, not to take.
Carol Battilocchi,
Reorder

Lodge continues to donate food to help the local needy
Our food collection for the McKinleyville Family Resource Center has attracted lots of very generous
donations in our Lodge. So far, we've filled two collection barrels with canned goods and other non-perishable
foods; about 150 pounds worth of food to help feed
the needier members of our community.
A phone inquiry was made to the Resource
Center today, to ask what which foods were most
needed at this time. The answer was that PEANUT
BUTTER is something that is always needed.
Another item is canned fruit with the pop-off lids. Pasta is
not as easy for folks to prepare as many are without cooking
facilities. Can- openers are needed as well, since most of us
donate canned goods such as beans, vegetables, canned
meat, etc.
The support for this ongoing collection has grown as
more of our Lodge members have found out about the program. Your thoughtfulness and generosity has
helped many kids and adults.
Let's keep it going. Each time you're heading for the Lodge, take a minute and think about something
you might bring to donate. The collection barrel(s) will be found near the door to the kitchen, inside the social
quarters. Thanks, fellow LOOM and WOTM brothers and sisters!
