Library Update
Much progress has been made at the construction site! Workers have begun installing the two-story curtain wall of
windows which will face a new terrace and the natural views to the south. Drywall and taping is occurring throughout the
building, as pictured in the inset photo of the new community room. The larger auditorium next to the community room will
feature tiered seating for performances.
Discounted Tickets for Local Attractions
The library has a limited number of discounted tickets available for the Bronx Zoo, Long Island Game Farm and
Long Island Aquarium.
• BRONX ZOO: tickets cost $21 and will expire on December 31
• LI GAME FARM: tickets cost $10 and do not expire
• LI AQUARIUM: tickets cost $16.50 (includes aviary and butterfly exhibit) and do not expire
Stop by the Circulation Desk after May 1 to purchase your tickets with cash (exact change please) or money order
only. There is a limit of six tickets per venue per person, and the person who purchases the tickets must have a valid
Longwood Public Library card.
Annual Budget Vote & Trustee Election
The library’s 2015-2016 budget vote was held on Tuesday, April 14. We are pleased to report that the budget passed,
379 yes to 107 no. Lauren O’Connell was re-elected to a five-year term on the Board of Trustees.

Unless otherwise noted, all programs for children from birth through Pre-K are intended for parents and children together.
Programs for children in grades K-6 are intended for children on their own.
2015 Summer Reading Club “Every Hero Has a Story”
It’s that time of year again!! Children of all ages (from infants to children who have completed grade
6) are invited to join the Summer Reading Club which begins on June 1. There are four clubs which
include infants through 23 months, 2 years to Pre K, completed grades K-4, and completed
grades 5 and 6. Fun prizes will be available for all clubs throughout the summer. Be sure to look for
our summer calendar for exciting programs that will be offered all summer long including crafts,
science explorations, animal encounters and much more! Children can begin redeeming prizes on
June 29. Registration for the Summer Reading Club begins on Monday, June 1. (If your child

Man’s best friend can do a lot more than fetch and roll over. Research now suggests that dogs can actually help children learn to
read. Come meet Karen Maier and one of her certified therapy dogs for a 15-minute reading session. For young children one of
the big challenges in learning to read is the embarrassment of making mistakes. Reading to dogs provides a simple solution: a
non-judgmental, comforting furry friend who “listens” and takes the pressure off of the child as he learns to read. This program
will be a drop-in for any child who is a reader through grade 6. Karen will be here beginning at 4:30 pm with the last session

Children’s Book Week

The annual celebration of books for young people and the joy of reading
Established in 1919, Children’s Book Week is the longest-running national literacy initiative in the
country. Come celebrate at Longwood Public Library by attending one of our great library programs,
visiting our Children’s Department, and participating in our first bookmark contest! Entry forms will be
available online or at the library from May 4-10, and designed bookmarks should be returned by June
1. The winning bookmarks will be printed and featured throughout the summer.

for your reading level and you have never read them before) and fill out a book summary form. Then after you read three books, you’ll
receive a raffle ticket to enter our grand prize drawing for an iPad mini. You’ll also get a free book from our giveaway cart and an
invitation to register for our end of summer party – Cosmic Bowling at Coram Country Lanes. For every book you read after that, you

Minecraft is more than just a game about breaking and placing blocks. Players can work together to build wonderfully imaginative
things, or can work independently to build a portal to another world. It’s like digital Legos – only better! There will be snacks and lots of
time to play. We’ll be playing the Minecraft.edu version of the game, which means that while you do not need to have a personal
account to play, you will be playing on the library’s server. Everyone who attends will need to sign and agree to LPL’s Minecraft Code

he Force was with our Star Wars-themed Battle of the Books team, The Chewbookas, this year! ADB:
Advanced Division Battle of the Books is a competition for teens in grades 9-12. Everyone on the
team read three books: Cinder by Marissa Meyer, Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins,
and Where Things Come Back by John Corey Whaley. We then played against 19 other libraries in a trivia
contest about all three books where our team continued their tradition of outstanding play by going to the finals
for the tenth year. We went on to win the Suffolk County Championship for the third year in a row, competing
against talented teams from Harborfields, Brentwood and Riverhead. We looked fabulous and our team also
took home the coveted costume award! Congratulations to an amazing team who always knew how to
combine having fun and working hard, and whose support and encouragement of each other was inspiring to
all of your coaches. And yes, Devin and Phil, those were indeed the questions you were looking for.

We are looking for young adults each month who would be willing to read a newly published teen novel and write a brief review which
will be published on our Facebook page! Pick up a book and a review form in the new teen books section. When you finish the book,
write a review and return it to the library. When we receive your review, we’ll give you a certificate for a half hour of community service.

Gift Bags for Our Troops

Bartow-Pell Museum & Arthur Avenue

We will begin the day with a tour of the Bartow-Pell Mansion, which recalls a type of country living that existed in the Pelham
Bay area in the mid-19th century, on an estate whose roots date back to 1654. Thomas Pell, an English doctor from
Connecticut, bought the land from the Siwanoy Indians as part of a nearly 9,000-acre tract. The estate was reduced to 220 acres
by the end of the Revolutionary War. It was bought in 1836 by Robert Bartow who built the present Grecian-style stone mansion
with Greek Revival interiors. He moved into the house with his wife and children in 1842. The Bartow-Pell Mansion opened as a
museum in 1946. After our tour we will enjoy a delicious lunch at Mario’s Restaurant on Arthur Avenue. There will be time to
shop on Arthur Avenue after lunch. The bus will leave Friendly’s parking lot at 8:30 am and return home at approximately 5:00
