2014 Annual Report to the Community
It’s been a great year for the Longwood Public Library, as we watch our library transform and grow into a high
performance building and a true community center. Staff have been busy offering programs and services from our
temporary location in the King Kullen shopping center, as well as program sites around the district. But we are all
looking forward to spring, followed by our late summer move back to our “home”. We will hold our Annual Budget
Vote & Trustee Election on Tuesday, April 14, 8:00 am – 9:00 pm. The budget information meeting is Wednesday,
March 18 at 7:00 pm, and the proposed budget will be available at the library by March 1. The Board of Trustees is
pleased to announce there will be no override of the state tax cap this year. If you have any questions about the

Library Update!
Inside the building, much progress has been made. Tan-colored spray foam insulation can be seen here along the walls and
on the ceiling of the new auditorium. Also visible in the photo are a stack of “borrowed light” frames – interior windows that
will allow daylight to pass through the building. Two important features of the transformed library will be natural light and
improved energy efficiency!
March is Women’s History Month - Legendary Women of Long Island

In honor of Women’s History Month, noted Long Island Gold Coast expert and bestselling author Monica Randall will examine the
lives of an elite group of glamorous women who lived during the glory days of Long Island’s fabled Gold Coast. Alva Vanderbilt,
Zelda Fitzgerald, Barbara Hutton and Gertrude Whitney were some of the first American superstars as their lives, loves, and
scandals played out on the pages of newspapers all over the country. Ms. Randall will discuss these women’s lives and many

Children’s Programs
Unless otherwise noted, all programs for children from birth through Pre-K are intended for parents and children
together. Programs for children in grades K-6 are intended for children on their own.
Read Aloud 15 Minutes
Research shows that reading aloud with children is the single most important thing to prepare a child for
reading and learning. The Read Aloud 15 Minutes national campaign promotes parents reading aloud to
their children at least 15 minutes every day starting at birth. Parents are children’s first and most important
teachers. Begin your child’s learning journey today!

Come visit Longwood’s newest “community,” PlayTown! Children will use their imaginations as they visit and play in
PlayTown’s supermarket, animal hospital, library and other community centers. By participating in dramatic play with
costumes and acting out behaviors of community helpers, children develop important social/emotional skills. It helps them

Paws for Reading

Man’s best friend can do a lot more than fetch and roll over. Research now suggests that dogs can actually help children
learn to read. Come meet Karen Maier and one of her certified therapy dogs for a 15-minute reading session. For young
children one of the big challenges in learning to read is the embarrassment of making mistakes. Reading to dogs provides a
simple solution: a non-judgmental, comforting furry friend who “listens” and takes the pressure off of the child as he learns to
read. This program will be a “drop-in” for any child who is a reader through grade 6. Karen will be here beginning at 4:30 pm
with the last session beginning no later than 5:45 pm. (LWJ905)

Miss Tiffany’s Tappin’ Toes

Does your child love to dance around and perform? Come join Miss Tiffany for a dance story and then learn some basic
dance moves. At the end of three fabulously fun weeks, your little dancers will put on a show for parents and guests. Please

Partner with your child in a calm, relaxed environment that will provide an intimate setting for learning through sensory
activities. Taught by Lisa Joy Walters, a NYS-certified special education teacher with more than 20 years of experience, this
four-week program is particularly appropriate for young children with developmental delays and/or those who fall within the

Children’s Book Week May 4-10
Children’s Book Week is the annual celebration of books for young people and the joy of
reading
Established in 1919, Children’s Book Week is the longest-running national literacy initiative in the country. Come
celebrate at the Longwood Public Library by attending one of our great library programs, visiting our Children’s
Department, and participating in our first bookmark contest! Entry forms will be available online or at the library
from May 4-10 and designed bookmarks should be returned by June 1. The winning bookmarks will be printed
and featured throughout the summer.

Minecraft Guild
Saturday, March 14 from 6:30-8:30 pm
Registration is ongoing
Minecraft is more than just a game about breaking and placing blocks. Players can work together to build wonderfully imaginative
things, or can work independently to build a portal to another world. It’s like digital Legos – only better! There will be snacks and
lots of time to play. We’ll be playing the Minecraft.edu version of the game, which means that while you do not need to have a
personal account to play, you will be playing on the library’s server. Everyone who attends will need to sign and agree to LPL’s
Minecraft Code of Conduct before starting the game. A copy of our Minecraft Code of Conduct can be found under the “Teens” link

Chalkboard Clock

Personalize this fun and useful wall clock by first painting wood with chalkboard paint and then using nail polish to hand paint small
gems. The finished product includes a clock mechanism, clock hands and battery and measures 6” x 12”. All materials will be

Students in grades K-12 can connect to certified tutors every day from 2:00-11:00 pm! Tutors are available to assist
with specific homework questions or you can choose “skills building” for help brushing up on academic skills. You can
even email a paper or essay to one of the tutors, and they will send back constructive comments within 24 hours.
Spanish-speaking tutors are also available everyday.

Bus Trip to 9/11 Museum

We will start the day with a visit to the 9/11 Museum. The National September 11 Museum serves as the country’s principal
institution for examining the implications of the events of 9/11, documenting the impact of those events and exploring the
continuing significance of September 11, 2001. The museum’s 110,000 square feet of exhibition space is located in the
archaeological heart of the World Trade Center site – telling the story of 9/11 through multimedia displays, archives, narratives
and a collection of monumental and authentic artifacts. There will be time to visit the 9/11 Memorial Waterfalls after the museum
visit. Next enjoy a family-style lunch served at the Peking Duck Restaurant in Chinatown. Following lunch (weather permitting),
visit the High Line, a one-mile aerial greenway built on a section of the former elevated freight railroad spur along the West Side.

Do you own an iPad or an iPhone and don’t know how to get started? Join us for this hands-on workshop where we will examine all the
basics and share what amazing things these devices can do. Make sure you bring your fully charged iPad or iPhone and your Apple ID
and password to class with you.
Part 2. Learn about iPad/iPhone Settings
Join us as we explore the settings of your Apple device. You will learn how to customize your device’s appearance and sounds, set lock
passwords, and enable restrictions. This is a hands-on class so make sure that your iPad or iPhone is up-to-date.
Part 3. Learn about iPad/iPhone Apps
Learn how to locate, evaluate, and use Apple apps. Be sure to bring along your devices so you can share and download a few of your
favorites.
