We’re so excited you’ve decided to join us for the 22nd Annual Throo the Zoo 5K on May 9 at 8:00am. Below
you’ll find some great info to make your race-day experience as smooth and enjoyable as possible. So gather
your friends and family, your favorite animal costume, and your running shoes and we’ll see you Saturday!
Packet Pick-up for Throo the Zoo will occur on Thursday, May 7; Friday, May 8 and Saturday, May 9. You’ll pick
up your race bib, timing chip, and T-shirt here!

We strongly encourage you to pick-up your packet on Thursday or Friday. Packet Pick-up will be open on
Saturday morning, but there could be long lines as race time approaches. You may pick up packets for your
friends, but you MUST have a copy of their photo ID in order to so do. If that participant is under 16 and
doesn’t have an ID, their packet must be picked up by their parent. If you have a friend or family member
who still needs to register, they can do so on site at our Packet Pick-up on Thursday, Friday or Saturday with
cash or credit card!
Thursday’s Packet Pick-up from 5:00pm-7:00pm will also be our Pre-Race Party! Along with picking up your
race packet, docents from the Zoo will be on hand with some educational animals for you to experience up
close and personal! Fleet Feet will also have some great deals on merchandise to help you prepare for
Saturday’s race. If you have friends or family who haven’t yet registered, they’ll be able to do so on site for
$35 ($5 off the current registration price)!
All registrants have been assigned a bib number. Those who registered before April 27 will have their name on
their bib (sorry—we had to send the bibs to the printer far enough in advance to get the timing chips on them,
so some of you weren’t able to get customized bibs)! Along with your bib number, you must have a signed
waiver on file to participate. If your waiver is unsigned, send an email to [email protected] and we’ll
send you the electronic link to sign your waiver. Or, you’ll find a waiver on the last page of this packet that you
can sign and bring with you to Packet Pick-up. Find your bib number and waiver info here.
The Throo the Zoo route is completely unique, unlike any other route you’ve run! It is similar to last year’s
route, with some minor changes due to
construction inside the Zoo! There are a few pretty
significant hills along the way (oomph!), but you’ll
have such awesome sites around you that (we’ll
pretend) you won’t even notice the incline. Click
here for a bigger, PDF version of the route.
Parking for the race will be free at the Zoo, but we
recommend arriving before 7:30am. Since the race
runs through and finishes in the parking lots, we
will need to close parking early pre-race to allow
time to make sure the course is safe for
participants.
To ensure that the race is safe and enjoyable for all
participants, we do have a few guidelines we ask
that all participants abide by:
 No pets
 No bicycles
 No skates
 Strollers ARE welcome
As you may know from past experiences at the Zoo or with Throo the Zoo, some of the Zoo’s paths are quite
narrow and could be difficult to navigate with large groups of people. To make the race more enjoyable for
everyone, we will start the race in waves. We will begin the first wave at 8:00am with the following two waves
3-4 minutes later. Here is a breakdown of which wave you should plan on starting with:
 Wave 1: runners, those who want to qualify for timed age-group awards
 Wave 2: run/walkers, those who still care about time but may not be looking to win an award
 Wave 3: walkers, people with strollers, those not interested in a fast time
No matter which wave you start with, we’ll make sure your time is accurate. We will have a timing mat at the
Start Line, so your time won’t start until you cross it. We will have signs along the Start Chute so you can line
up with your wave of choice. Please make sure you are at the Start and ready to go at 8:00am regardless of
wave choice.
As you finish just outside the Zoo, head on over to the field between the Start and Finish for post-race
refueling and refreshments! We will have numerous sponsors on hand with food, drinks, and post-race
massages to help you wind down and recover from those hills. Beginning at 9:00 am, we’ll start drawing door
prizes on our stage. We’ll have items from State Farm, Fleet Feet, the Louisville Bats, and the Louisville Zoo
that we’ll be raffling off by bib number. Make sure you stick around as you must be present to win!
Along with the raffle, we’ll also have contest judging beginning at 9:30am for those who decided to dress in
costumes. Let your imagination run wild and dress in your favorite animal outfit! Runners with the most
creative costume in five categories (Adult Male, Adult Female, Child Male, Child Female, Group) will receive a
prize pack courtesy of McDonald’s® Restaurants of Kentuckiana and the Zoo. Individual winners will receive a
$25 McDonald’s® Arch Card and a Zoo prize pack, while the group winner will receive a $50 Arch Card!
Winners will be chosen by a panel of Zoo staff and audience applause vote.
The top male and top female overall finishers will receive our signature awards plaques with an ostrich egg on
them! We will then be awarding the top three males and females overall and in the following age categories
with a certificate: 9 & Under, 10-14, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 6569, 70 & Over. We’ll announce these award winners along with our Costume Contest at 9:30am on stage.
Race proceeds for Throo the Zoo benefit the Louisville Zoo. The Louisville Zoo, a non-profit organization and
