DID YOU KNOW? Your Zoo is open year round, weather permitting. Lehigh Valley Zoo is a vibrant year-round Smart FUN community resource, not just a fun recreational summer attraction. The 300+ animal ambassadors that reside at your Zoo require daily care so there is no reason for your Zoo to close when the temperature drops. School holidays and weekends are the perfect times to bundle up the family and experience your very own Zoo wonderland in winter! WHY YOUR SUPPORT MATTERS In preparation for the long winter season, our zookeepers’ daily routine increases as many of our animal ambassadors require additional bedding, heat lamps and supplementary food to account for the extra energy they need to maintain their internal body temperatures in cold weather. Our animal care team follows guidelines established by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) for each species pertaining to temperature, icing conditions and wind chill, and then adjusts their environment accordingly. The Zoo’s cold-hardy animals will almost always be on exhibit, while other animals will be allowed to choose whether they would like to be outdoors or stay in their indoor space. Animals that are sensitive to the cold may be kept off-exhibit in their indoor space when required for their well-being. Lehigh Valley Zoo’s budget directly related to animal care is approximately $1,200 per day … winter, spring, fall and summer. The Zoo’s winter and spring reduced admission rates help generate off-season attendance, but not quite enough to offset our fixed winter expenses.
