April is National Autism Awareness Month A new study suggests that about half of all cases of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) may be diagnosable during the toddler years. Compared with typically developing children, children with autism have a much smaller inventory of sounds, words, and gestures that they use to communicate with others. If you suspect that your child has some of the signs listed above, talk to your Family & Community Engagement Specialist or the Nurse Coordinator assigned to your center. Early signs of autism that parents and pediatricians should be on the lookout for include the following: Rather than asking for help with something, the child may struggle alone without looking around for assistance. Children with autism may not follow their parents gaze or initiate contact with others. Instead of using a toy as it is meant to be used, like picking up a toy fork and pretending to eat with it, the child may do something unusual with the toy.
