April Showers Bring May Flowers
Westgate Center, a grantee site in West Palm Beach has
been working on helping parents start their own garden!!
The Westgate Center staff are also trying to start a community garden. In pursuit of their efforts, they received
five bags of soil donated by Home Depot and Carnation
flowers! They are searching for a place to have their
garden and may resort to using flower pots instead. All
in all, they have turned their April showers into May
flowers!!

Spring Activities for Children
As part of the recruitment efforts, staff from South
Bay, Pahokee, and Palm Beach County School District’s Belle Glade Elementary Centers participated in the 31st Annual Afro Arts Festival and Parade in Belle Glade on March 21st, 2015 . The
event is sponsored by a local sorority chapter and
celebrates the local culture and art bringing musical entertainment, art exhibits, and handmade
crafts from the Glades area which includes the
cities of Belle Glade, Pahokee, South Bay, and Canal Pointe.
We all love the spring months with butterflies, flowers,
and the opportunity to play outside more. What could be
better than playing outside? How about making colorful
crafts, bright bulletin boards, and bountiful bird feeders!
For information and ideas for spring, check out your local
library, the internet, and your Head Start and Early Head
Start center staff.

Congressman Alcee Hastings Reads to LSF Head Start Children
Congressman Alcee Hastings, who represents Florida’s 20th district, came in to read to the children at Boynton Beach Head Start Center during our Fathers Read to Children Month in March.
The event was featured in the Palm Beach Post on April 9, 2015 with some very attentive faces
absorbed in the Congressman’s story. Born in Altamonte Springs, Florida, Hastings was educated at Howard University in Washington, D.C. and Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. He
earned his bachelor's degree in zoology and botany from Fisk in 1958. He received his law degree
from Florida A&M University in 1963. Hastings was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives
in 1992, representing Florida's 23rd district. , Alcee Hastings represents Florida's 20th district
beginning January 2013.
April is National Autism Awareness Month
A new study suggests that about half of all cases of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) may be diagnosable during the toddler
years. Compared with typically developing children, children with autism have a much smaller inventory of sounds, words, and
gestures that they use to communicate with others. If you suspect that your child has some of the signs listed above, talk to
your Family & Community Engagement Specialist or the Nurse Coordinator assigned to your center.
Early signs of autism that parents and pediatricians should be on the lookout for include the following:

Rather than asking for help with something, the child may struggle alone without looking around for assistance.

Children with autism may not follow their parents gaze or initiate contact with others.

Instead of using a toy as it is meant to be used, like picking up a toy fork and pretending to eat with it, the child may do
something unusual with the toy.
