Dinghy Safety Rules and Recommendations
1.
The Skipper of each craft is responsible for observing safety precautions
2.
All dinghies should have adequate buoyancy
3.
Life jackets or buoyancy aids with attach whistles must be worn
4.
Paddles or oars and bailers must be carried and attached to the hull
5.
Suitable flares must be carried, and only used if assistance is required
6.
A lone dinghy must carry means of communicating with the shore
7.
All dinghies, whether racing or not, must sing the race sheet when racing is being
carried out. Dinghies not racing should put their details at the bottom of the sheet,
separate from the racing dinghies. The OOD should notify the safety boat helm of all
the dinghies on the water
8.
No one under the age of 14 years may act as the skipper of a craft
9.
Club Officers, Sailing Secretary, Safety Officer and Officer of the Day may prevent
racing if the prevailing or forecast conditions or craft are considered unsafe
10.
A certificate of third party insurance must be held by all craft
11.
Adequate protective clothing appropriate for seasonal or forecast conditions should
be worn
Winter Rules:
A. When dinghy sailing a wet suit or dry suit must be worn
B. Sailing should not take place after dark, as a rule, except in exceptional
circumstances
C. At least two boats should be on the water
D. All boats must carry a means of communication VHF and/or mobile phone
