From the Pastor… We have begun the time of Lent. I was saddened that we were unable to observe our first Ash Wednesday celebration, but we will do it next year. I know some of you may be asking Lent, …isn’t that catholic? Well, yes and no. It was a tradition that Protestants quit observing when we broke from the Catholic Church and got rid of all things, and not just the things that needed to be fixed. As we have gotten further away from those days, we realize that we may have thrown the “baby out with the bath water.” There are many great things that we are reclaiming from very deep traditions which can have great meaning in our lives today. Lent is the time before Easter. It is 40 days which represent the 40 days that Jesus spent in the wilderness before he began his ministry. The beginnings of this are not certain, but we do know that it was set at 40 days by the first Council of Nicaea in 325. With that little bit of history behind us, let us look at why we should observe this time. It is meant to be a time of year when we give up something that may be a crutch, an addiction, or something that has “control” over us. For example, I might give up drinking Diet Dr. Pepper during this time. This would hopefully remind me of the sacrifice that Jesus made when he prepared for his ministry and ultimately the giving of his life for our sins. As we give up these things, we will be daily reminded of what might keep us from focusing on what is the most important thing in our lives. Every time we want to participate in an activity or partake of a certain food or libation, we remember that Jesus gave up his comfortable life next to the Lord and came to serve us. Maybe, we might even give to God the money we might spend on a certain item as a continued show of sacrifice for Him. I say all this to remind all of us that we can’t forget that the most important date in our history is just around the corner. Easter is just over a month away and we need to take time to begin to prepare our hearts and minds. Just like we do for Advent, Lent is our time of preparation for the most important time for us. I pray that you all will seek the Lord and see what you might be willing to sacrifice to help you remember and prepare your heart for Easter. FREE COMMUNITY DINNER FRIDAY, MARCH 13, 2015, 4:00 PM—7:00 PM "For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in." Matthew 25:35 PENNIES FROM HEAVEN SATURDAY, MARCH 14, 2015 The cold weather has arrived and so has the need to help the less fortunate. Winter items such as coats, sweaters, scarves, gloves, blankets, hand warmers and other like items will be invaluable at this time. Even more important and always needed is the basic need for men and women socks and underwear. Don’t forget that toiletry items such as washcloths, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, lotion, chapstick, shampoo, feminine products, razors, etc. are also suggested since our inventory greatly depletes each month after delivery. Thank you in advance for your dedication and commitment to support this ongoing Lyndale ministry. MISSION OPPORTUNITY MAY 10-16, 2015 Lyndale will be sending a team to Shelby, North Carolina in May. We will leave May 10 and return May 16. During our time there we will be staying at the Shelby Mission Camp and help the people in that area. This trip is sponsored by North Carolina Baptist Men. There is a sign up sheet on the Mission Board in the west wing. If you are interested in going, please sign up and give a $50.00 deposit to Jo Ball. This deposit is due upon signing as your commitment to this project. The deadline to sign up is April 1. This will allow plenty of time for planning both here and in North Carolina. Hopefully, many of you will feel called to serve by joining this team. "It's good to be blessed. It's better to be a blessing". It seems we have been on the prayer list lately far too many times; my surgeries, Bobby’s health issues, his fall, death of his sister and our great grandson, Chad, surgery. You have been there for us every time. Thanks for the many cards, food, phone calls but especially for your genuine love for us. We both love all of you and are proud to call you “Our Lyndale Family.” You make God smile.
