speakers, as well as fellow physicians from the region, who are noted

current changes in healthcare and what you can do as a physician
to successfully navigate these changes for yourself, your staff, and
especially for your patients and their families while avoiding potential risks.

Bryan N. Batson, MD joined Hattiesburg
Clinic in 2003 and was named Director of
the Hypertension Clinic in 2005. He is certified by the American Society of Hypertension as a Specialist in Clinical Hypertension, and he received one
of 10 grants from the American Medical Association in 2009 to
investigate the Best Practices in Managing Hypertension. In 2014,
Hattiesburg Clinic’s Hypertension Clinic was named one of only
eight non-academic Centers of Excellence in the United States. Dr.
Batson remains active in research and teaching, currently serving as principal investigator in four clinical trials and as associate
faculty for the College of Osteopathic Medicine at William Carey
University and in the Department of Physician Assistant Studies at
Mississippi College. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Batson
sits on the Board of Directors of Hattiesburg Clinic, as well as the
Quality Care Improvement Committee. He currently serves as the
Chief Medical Information Officer and EHR director for Hattiesburg Clinic.

Lisa Freeman currently serves as Clinic Risk
Management and Compliance Officer for
Hattiesburg Clinic. In this seat, she is responsible for maintaining an environment of quality control and
reducing and/or eliminating risks that relate to patient care, employees, property, and all other areas of potential liability. She collaborates with physicians and employees in the clinic to develop,
maintain, assess, and improve risk management systems so that
risks and possible risks can be identified for appropriate follow-up
and/or corrective action.
As Compliance Officer, she is responsible for overseeing all aspects
of the clinic’s Corporate Compliance plan. This includes ensuring
that the clinic and all employees are in compliance with the rules
and regulations of regulatory agencies, confirming that clinic policies and procedures are being followed, identifying areas of compliance vulnerability and risk, and developing/implementing corrective action plans. In addition, she serves as the clinic’s HIPAA
privacy officer ensuring the privacy of patient health information.
She is responsible for the formation, implementation, maintenance
and distribution of the clinic’s Privacy policies and procedures.
Ms. Freeman currently supervises the Review and Compliance
department, the Credentialing department, the Chart Audit and
Education department, and the Quality Management department
at Hattiesburg Clinic.

UPDATES
What are the latest implications for Mississippi physicians
regarding the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and
the Supreme Court decisions resulting from this massive legislation? This presentation will offer an overview of current federal regulatory and legislative changes in healthcare affecting
physician practice and will address how these issues could
impact the daily delivery of patient care. Physicians will also
become familiar with new requirements, policies, and procedures from the PPACA law that could necessitate changes in
their practice patterns.

STRANGE BUT TRUE: A 17 YEAR
MALPRACTICE CLAIM ODYSSEY
In the spring of 2014, MACM Defense Counsel Stuart Robinson, Jr. ended a lawsuit against a MACM insured physician that lasted 17 years. The appeal system was used and
the case was heard at every level of our judicial system. Mr.
Robinson and MACM Claims Representative Keith Westbrook
will share the facts of this cautionary tale and will focus on
the lessons learned as a result of this atypical case. Some of
these lessons are recurring issues, such as the need for thorough and timely documentation. Others are a bit surprising,
such as how family relationships and testimony can impact
the outcome.
Stuart Robinson, Jr., Esq.

For nearly 30 years, Stuart Robinson has
defended entities and individuals in medical malpractice claims, pharmaceutical
claims, product liability claims, commercial
transportation claims, industrial accidents,
and insurance defense issues. Mr. Robinson is a seasoned trial attorney with substantial experience at both the trial and appellate
levels, having tried approximately 50 cases to verdict in both state
and federal court. He has argued before The Mississippi Supreme
Court and Court of Appeals on multiple occasions. Mr. Robinson
is credited with being lead counsel on three of the largest industrial
accidents in the state of Mississippi: The collapse of the 2,000 foot
WLBT television tower in 1997; the explosion of a rubber processing plant in Vicksburg in 2002; and a gas pipeline explosion in Meridian in 2008. Mr. Robinson was also retained as counsel for the
defense in the largest Federal Civil RICO action brought in Mississippi by insurance commissioners of several states.
Mr. Robinson received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of
Mississippi and his Juris Doctor from the University of Mississippi
School of Law. He also received the prestigious Certified Legal
Management Professional designation for successfully completing
the 2013 Litigation Management Institute certification program in
the area of The Business of Litigation.

Keith Westbrook graduated from Belhaven
College in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science
degree in Business Administration with a
minor in Marketing. He has been associated with the insurance business for over
25 years. In 1996, he joined Medical Assurance Company of Mississippi as a Claims Representative specializing in the handling of
claims and lawsuits against physicians. Mr. Westbrook routinely
intervenes on behalf of physicians to assure their interest is protected and works closely with defense counsel to aggressively pursue the course of action that is expressed by the insured and dictated by the process of discovery. He has attended multiple trials,
mediations, and settlement conferences and is thoroughly familiar
with all aspects of medical malpractice litigation.

TELEMEDICINE: USING
TECHNOLOGY TO DELIVER
HEALTHCARE
The mission of DEA’s Office of Diversion Control is to prevent,
detect, and investigate the diversion of controlled pharmaceuticals from legitimate sources while ensuring an adequate
and uninterrupted supply for legitimate medical, commercial, and scientific needs. In this presentation, Special Agent
in Charge Keith Brown will describe his experiences working
in the trenches with physicians and controlled substances to
uphold this mission. His presentation will demonstrate how
physicians can inadvertently make mistakes in this area and
how they can prevent these errors in their future practice.
Technology based healthcare delivery can be used to make
healthcare better and more efficient. In this presentation, we
will review the various types of telehealth and how technology
can be successfully employed by both rural and urban healthcare providers. Guidance will be offered on issues such as patient safety, efficiency, and quality of care. This presentation
will also address some of the most commonly asked questions
related to telehealth, including expense and subspecialty care.

Keith Brown began his career in law enforcement in 1993 as a Special Agent with the
Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage
Control following his graduation from the University of Virginia
with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Foreign Affairs. Agent Brown
began his career as a DEA Special Agent in 1995 in the Atlanta
Field Division. Following his graduation from the DEA Basic
Agent Academy in Quantico, Virginia, he was assigned to the
Houston Field Division.
Agent Brown was promoted to Group Supervisor in the Memphis
Resident Office in May 2005 and supervised the Memphis Task
Force Group — a mixed group of Federal agents and state and local law enforcement officers targeting major drug traffickers in the
Memphis area. In August 2008, Agent Brown was promoted to the
position of Resident Agent in Charge for the Memphis Resident
Office, responsible for all DEA activities in the Western portion of
Tennessee.
In June 2010, Agent Brown was transferred to the DEA Special
Operations Division as a Staff Coordinator and coordinated major
investigations among the various DEA field divisions, providing
operational and intelligence support. In April 2011, Mr. Brown reported to the DEA Albuquerque District Office as the Assistant
Special Agent in Charge and directed the enforcement activities of
DEA in Northern New Mexico.
In December 2013, Agent Brown was promoted to his current position as the Special Agent in Charge (SAC) of the New Orleans
Field Division where he is responsible for all DEA operations in
the states of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Arkansas. Under
the leadership of Agent Brown, the New Orleans Field Division is
committed to targeting major drug trafficking organizations and
reducing the threat of drugs and violent crime in the communities
served by the DEA.

As the Chairperson for the University of
Arkansas for Medical Sciences’ Department
of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Curtis
Lowery is viewed as a champion of antenatal and neonatal telemedicine benefiting the patient and physician alike.
Dr. Lowery facilitated the process in which Arkansas insurance
handles telemedicine, increased Medicaid reimbursements and
promoted understanding for telemedicine, and brought telehealth
access to over 60 hospitals and community clinics in rural Arkansas providing medical consultations combined with provider and
patient education. Through this expertise, Dr. Lowery founded the
UAMS Center for Distance Health, a technology-based partnership of the College of Medicine and Regional Programs. This Center directly offers telemedicine, continuing medical and health education, public health education, and evaluation research through
interactive video throughout Arkansas. The Center for Distance
Health represents the culmination of Arkansas’ telemedicine and
distance health technology expertise, with directors and stakeholders who have been instrumental in developing telehealth initiatives in Arkansas.
In his latest endeavor, Dr. Lowery led a statewide effort in attaining
over $102M in federal funding to allow the creation of the Arkansas Healthcare, Higher Education, Public Safety, & Research Integrated Broadband Initiative. The grant will allow the creation of
high-speed internet connections in all 75 counties in the state and
in 135 communities. This program, now called E-Link, will make
or upgrade connections to 81 hospitals, all two-year colleges, eight
public libraries and a variety of public health institutions, bringing
the total number of partners for the project to over 470.

University of Colorado, which is an innovative program teaching 320 medical students the relevance and

the 1990s as a Bayer Facilitator, he has provided workshops for over 8,000 providers in Colorado and other
events across the country. Dr. Boyle has developed his
own interactive workshops on a variety of communications issues, including ER team building, death and
dying, body talk, and difficult encounters in the clinical
setting.

As evidenced by national and MACM claims data,
there is an unfortunate and surprisingly significant
prevalence of misdiagnosis in healthcare. In this
presentation, our speaker will explore this phenomenon and categorize the causes of errors in medicine. In addition, he will analyze those associated
causations which physicians can control and will
offer tools for attendees to develop a skill set to decrease diagnostic errors.
