SMDA Awards and Medals - State of Maine Dressage Association

State of Maine Dressage Association Awards Program
Year-End Award Requirements
 Rider must be a member of SMDA before the first show of the season for scores to count.
 Year-end scores are calculated by test. Horse and rider combination needs a minimum of four scores
from four different judges for each test. Four best scores are averaged.
 High Point Junior and High Point Senior awards are given based on the highest average (four scores)
on any one test, as submitted on the Rider Report form.
 At least two scores must be from SMDA sponsored shows at the Hollis Equestrian Park. All scores
must be from SMDA sponsored shows or SMDA affiliated shows.
 All tests qualify for year-end awards. The average score must be above 55% to qualify.
 When you submit scores from SMDA affiliated shows, you must submit photocopies of your tests
(front and back).
 You must submit the SMDA Rider Report form by November 1st.
Note: The same horse and rider combination cannot win the same SMDA year-end award more than
once. This policy encourages riders to “move up” when they consistently earn high scores on a test, and
also to be fair to riders who are competing for the same award. You can still compete in our shows; we
are just putting a one-time limit on the year-end award.
Tarbaby Award
The Tarbaby Award is given to the highest scoring horse/rider combination competing at First Level. This
is calculated from the four-score average, as submitted on the Rider Report Form. The Tarbaby Award is
a perpetual trophy that was sponsored by the late Jane Petrin in memory of her First Level mount.
Musical Freestyle
Musical Freestyle class is offered for First Level and above. To enter the Musical Freestyle class, you
must have successfully completed the highest test at that level. Please submit a photocopy of your
qualifying test along with your show entry form. Musical Freestyle class is ridden in the large arena.
SMDA Rider Achievement Medals
 Medals are one-time rider achievement awards, designed to recognize accomplishment up the
levels. Riders can earn scores on different horses.
 Riders can submit scores for any test within the specified level. Within each level, scores must be
from different judges – L judge or higher.
 Scores from show year 2013 and earlier are grandfathered to include any schooling or recognized
dressage show in Maine. Beginning in show year 2014, scores must be from an SMDA sponsored
show or an SMDA affiliated show. If all scores submitted are from grandfathered shows (pre-2014),
at least two of the scores must be from an SMDA sponsored or SMDA affiliated show.
 Riders must be SMDA members: 1) at the time the scores are submitted; and 2) beginning in 2014,
at the time the scores are earned.
 Riders must submit photocopies of their tests (front and back).
