2nd Symposium on Child & Adolescent Mental

- The Delta Clinic proudly presents "The 2nd Symposium on Child & Adolescent Mental Health With a System Focus"
9th May 2015 Kuala Lumpur, Msia
Preamble:
System & family therapy/Intervention is emerging as a major consideration when working with children and
adolescent who presents with significant mental health issues. Moving away from individual work, clinician can
begin to appreciate and understand how the broader contexts (e.g. extended family networks, school and or
temple/church) interact with mental health issues. McNeely, et. al.; [2002]; Whitlock, [2006] states, “One of
the fundamentally important dimensions of school climate is relational and how “connected” people feel to
one another in school…..growing body of research that suggests that connectedness is a powerful predictor of
adolescent health and academic outcomes.” Thus holistic approach provides opportunities to shift the view of
"child's difficulties" from a developmental framework to "how to" mobilize resources and competence in
conquering life's challenge.
It is envisaged this symposium will provide a platform to encourage clinicians to network and dialogue on
these issues and shed light on the complexity when considering how best to work with system. as well as the
idea of “shared concern” when intervening and what makes intervention effective.
