SADANAND Green Miles As a child, I would sit atop the patio of aunty Madhavi’s house, nestled amidst miles of green paddy fields, and watch her son-in-law Sreedharan Nair, with a full palate of oil colours, making the canvas on the easel come alive with each stroke. I would not imagine then that all over the world thousands of soldiers were trying to kill each other to win the World War 2 Cup. Most days when there was no school, I used to be a fixture in the said patio. If I had persisted with my self education, I would perhaps have overtaken Raja Ravi Varma! Things petered out and mostly panned out - pushing me into an unchartered lawyer’s life, filled with love for all creations and malice towards none! The kind old Truman, with love for the suffering humanity, declared his innings closed after his two batsmen, the atom bombs, had in a trice sent thousands of the good, the bad and the uglies to their infernal abode. Earlier, our own Subash Chandra Bose was chosen as India’s representative by proxy and remains an eternal enigma to those who specialise in making the imagination run riotto make him a super human, savoured by readers of action thrillers of the Wild West. Some of them are petitioning God to lift the veil of secrecy to reveal the indestructible hero who, according to their reading of India’s modern history, won freedom for Bharat from the White hyenas. These incurable insomniacs have, along with a brand new flag, been given the constitutional right to believe that the breath of truth blows through every speck of the atom of our Constitution. I believe in letting go of the past and not muddy the present with unnecessary dissections. We are pure not merely because Gandhi, Nehru, Bose and many more unnamed freedom fighters inhaled and exhaled the spiritual air of this wonderful land, but that this land Bharat has been holy from time immemorial and that is one up on the others, a unique diktat. You live by your credowhich,if diagnosed in good time, acts as a natural draw to those with a spark of holiness. It is therefore not surprising that our country was overflowing with amazing individuals such as SC Bose who put the country before self and radiated the kind of patriotism and spirit that made this land a truly liveable placein harmony with all creations, irrespective of the colour of the skin or assumed sins. It is very much like the island of peace I experienced as a boy of tenwatching the emerald green fields of paddy, nursing a cup of steaming tea on my aunt’s patio long, long ago. Vaidyanathan, 15/1, North Usman Road, T. Nagar ASHOK NAGAR - K.K. NAGAR BAZAAR This column is intended to help small businesses in Ashok Nagar and K.K. Nagar to have a cost-effective advertisement medium. Advertisement in this section will be in standard panel sizes of 4 cm. x 1 column (costing only Rs. 300) and 4 cm. x 2 column (costing Rs. 600) Avoid revealing PAN number unless mandatory Sir, Sometime back, the Income Tax Department had come out with an advisory to the public that they should avoid revealing Permanent Account Number (PAN) while booking train tickets. Many passengers provide their PAN for Tatkal bookings leading to the number and name of the holder coming into public domain. The notification stated that citing one’s PAN while booking railway tickets could be a grave security hazard as the Indian Railways displays the PAN, name, sex, age of the passengers on the reservations charts. Fraudsters and traders use these details for benami transactions. The above advisory came very true the other day, when our Association’s secretary had been to the Chennai Central Station to see off one of his relatives. He noticed a youngster peering at the reservation charts pasted on the train and noting details on a paper. Realizing that something was amiss, he confronted the youth. The youth said that he was appointed by an agent to note down the name of the passenger with details of sex/age and the PAN which are indicated in the reservation chart. He further said that he is paid Rs. 20 per listing. The details are sold to traders for benami transactions. In view of the above, the public are requested not to reveal the PAN for transactions other than wherever it has been made mandatory by the Income Tax Department. The Railways lists many other options for proof of identity like Aadhaar card, voters’ photo identity card, passport, driving license to name a few. While the Railways must launch a drive to bring to book those behind this, it must avoid giving details of PAN in the reservation chart in the larger interest of the traveling public.— T. Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association, 30, Rangan Street, T. Nagar CMWSSB yet to issue new tax cards Sir, Chennai Metro Water Supply & Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) has not yet issued the new water and sewerage tax cards to consumers for payment of the tax and levy in this regard. The card was last issued in 2010 and was valid for payments up to March 31 of this year. The authorities in charge should have got the new cards printed much in advance and kept them ready for distribution in the first week of April. Advance payment of the taxes due must be rewarded with an incentive of 5% to maximize collection and achieve their targeted collection easily and quickly instead of frantic last minute action of announcements requesting the tax payers to pay the dues before the 31st of March. I hope the authorities take prompt action to issue the new cards.—K. Vaidyanathan, New No. 15/1, Old No. 47, North Usman Road, T. Recalling how she got the chance to sing for the film for which Ghibran has provided the musical score, she said, “It all began when I met Ghibran at an audio function and told him that I am a singer and wanted to sing for him. He told me to send him my demo CD. After some days I got a call from his office to come to the recording theater in Valasaravakkam. He asked me whether I know Carnatic music. I said ‘yes’ and told that I am also learning Hindustani music. He told me to sing the lines of the song for the film and everything was over in no time. He said that the director of the movie must give his approval and I was waiting for the green signal from his office. Every now and then I used to call his office. Before the release of the audio on March 1, I came to 2-wheeler rider hurt in mishap A 2-wheeler rider was injured in his right leg in an accident involving a car at 12.30 p.m on April 18 at the junction of Gopalan Street and Postal Colony 2nd Street, West Mam-balam. The rider was unable to move and was lying in the spot for more than half hour waiting for an ambulance. Medical assistants in the ambulance gave him first aid before taking him to a private hospital. Policemen attached to R3 Ashok Nagar police dispersed the huge crowd which had gathered at the spot and restored normal flow of traffic. Residents of the area said that accidents occurred frequently in the absence of speedbreakers in the busy residential area. know that it was for the film ‘Uttama Villain’ and I was so excited. I thanked the music director for giving me the biggest chance of my career”. She also added, “Singing for a music director like Ghibran and rendering the lines written and sung by the legend Kamal Haasan, who is a master in all departments of film making, is something more than an Oscar award for a new singer like me. One can see in the music album of ‘Uttama Villain’ that Kamal sir has written nearly all the songs and sung them with more than one singer but the song ‘Iraniyan Naadagam’ has been sung only by both of us. Ghibran told me that Kamal sir’s favo-urite number in the album is ‘Iraniyan Naadagam’which is accompanied by Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra. I do not know how to thank both Kamal sir and music director Ghibran for giving me this opportunity”. Just days before the audio release of ‘Uttama Villain’, Rukmini heard that the song had also been approved by Kamal Haasan. She met Kamal Haasan and got his blessings. He wrote a note in which he said, “Isaiyum Vazhkaiyum Sirakka Vazh-thukkal” (let music and your life prosper always) and posed for a photograph with her. “I will always treasure the note”, she said. This is her first film song in Tamil. She has sung for music director Deva for a Sai Baba album, S. S. Kumaran for his Malayalam movie “Kerala. Com” and a Tulu number. She has lent her voice for music directors V. Thashi, Faisal, Prem, Manikanth Kadhri and L. V. Ganesan. She learnt Carnatic music from Hemalatha Narasimhan and Padma Chandilyan, and is currently getting training in Hindustani music from Pandit Ballesh and his sons Krishna and Prakash. She can be contacted in phone 2434 3319. and T. Nagar. Preethi said that the Trust has been providing medical assistance for cancer patients for several years.
