The trip to LA for Tama’s NAPA therapy went really well. It was really tough for him, but he got
through the 3 weeks and came out a lot stronger.
ESTABLISHED 1972
Each morning he started off doing an hour of Cuevas Medek Exercise (CME), which uses gravity to
teach his muscles to react instead of just flopping.
Then he would do an hour of speech therapy – although if he had started talking it would be in an
American accent haha! “Tama can you say Hi Mom?”
The last two hours were spent doing Neurosuit therapy. He wore a special suit with lots of bungy
cords – this Neurosuit was originally designed to help Russian astronauts re-adjust to gravity when
they returned to earth. There he was put into a whole lot of crawling and standing positions, helped
to walk along furniture, in walkers, or harnessed on treadmills and tramps.

He shed lots of tears every day, but he persevered, and the progress he made was amazing. He
had his family all there encouraging him, trying to distract him from crying. He liked his Nanny Lin
reading and singing him nursery rhymes (it was more like Nursery Rhyme Kapahaka, as she did all
the actions too!!) Dad John brought the guitar to therapy some days, Tama’s favourite song was
Uptown Funk! And Neitana, Kaani, Makaia, (his brothers and sister) and Mum Kirsty all helped
cheer him from the sideline!!

He is now able to stand, pretty much unassisted for short periods. He also knows how to lift each
knee to take a step when you support him to walk. Anyone wanting to see his therapy videos

wonderful to see his progress in such a short time. Many heartfelt thanks to all those who gave

This week we have attended
a range of tasks including
chasing stock off the roads,
chasing motorbikes from
riding where they are
banned,
dealing
with
insecure properties, dealing
with traffic matters, hunting
down wanted people and
catching those walking the
streets with weapons. It is
thanks to your calls that we
are able to intervene and stop
people from inflicting their
anger on others.
Hunting season is here and
that means there are a heap
of people in our forests and
lakes with guns. We remind
all hunters to make sure that
if using firearms they use
them safely and lawfully.
You must make sure to
‘Identify your target’ – it is
no excuse to say you shot
someone
because
they
looked like an animal. Also
make sure that you hunt
where you are allowed to
hunt. Unlawful hunters will
end up in Court.
And finally it is farewell to
Constable
Thomson
(Tommo) this week after 3
years working here. He
leaves us to join the Northern
Territory Police and within a
few weeks will be going
walkabout in the desert. I
know there are many in the
community who have been
helped by Tommo and who

Changes have been made to how patients access weekend after hours care for The South Waikato, which includes Mangakino Health Services.
The after-hours Duty Dr is now based at the ‘GP FAST TRACKING CLINIC’ based at the main
Entrance of the Tokoroa Hospital.
Saturday Only: Hours are from 10am—4pm no appointment necessary
Sunday after-hours are covered by Tokoroa Hospital Emergency Department.
Patients Registered at Mangakino Health Services can phone 07 882 8299 to speak to a triage
nurse out of usual hours.
