Sunday Bulletin - Manhattan Presbyterian Church

Manhattan
Presbyterian
Church
The Lord’s Day, June 7th, 2015
To all who are spiritually weary and seek rest; to all who mourn and long for
comfort; to all who struggle and desire victory; to all who sin and need a
Savior; to all who are strangers and want fellowship; to all who hunger and
thirst after righteousness; and to all who will come, this church opens wide her
doors and offers welcome in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Welcome
We are so excited you can be here today to join in worshipping the God
of the universe with Manhattan Presbyterian Church. We love God and
are thrilled to see God build this local church body for the furthering of
His Kingdom in Manhattan, Kansas. We know visiting a church can lead
to a lot of questions and we’d love to help you find answers so please
ask. Again, we’re really glad you’re here.
Sunday Information
Nursery
Nursery is provided on the north side of the building (to the right from the
entryway) for children 4 and under, but they are also always welcome in the
service.
Restrooms
Restrooms are located in the entrance hallway.
Children’s Church/Worship Training
In the future we plan to have a time for preparing older children for participating
in the Sunday worship service. This will allow children to worship with their
families before being dismissed prior to the sermon to learn more about how
and why we worship God. Currently they remain the whole service or go to the
nursery.
Why Robes?
Brian & Travis wear robes during the service which might seem odd. This has
been a tradition of the church for many centuries. It helps connect us to our past
heritage.
The robe also helps emphasize the office of the pastor and de-emphasize the
personality of the men in the pulpit. It serves to take notice away from what
Brian & Travis are wearing that particular Sunday, thus focusing us away from
their terrible fashion senses and onto Christ himself. At first it may seem odd,
but after a few services you won’t notice it, which is partly the point.

LIFE IN MANHATTAN PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
Today we are highlighting three of our Disctinctives below, but you can learn
details of all of our Core Values & Distinctives at ManhattanPres.com
Evangelical
To say that we are evangelical means that we take our stand with all those who
believe in what used to be called “the fundamentals”: the existence of the triune
God, the deity of Jesus, the virgin birth, and substitutionary and vicarious
atonement of Christ, the physical resurrection of Christ, the sure return of Christ,
and the infallibility and divine authority of the Bible which is a faithful and true
guide to what we are to believe and how we are to live. We joyfully affirm our
unity with those from every tradition and denomination who hold to these
fundamentals including those true believers in Christ who, for whatever reasons,
find themselves members of denominations or churches with which we might
have certain disagreements.
Evangelistic
This means we take seriously the Great Commission, “Go and make disciples of
all nations.” Without compromising the sovereignty of God, we affirm the
responsibility of each person to repent and believe in Jesus Christ as Savior and
Lord and our responsibility to extend the Gospel invitation as a call to salvation
to everyone who hears its message. We invite all, without distinction, to drink
freely of the Water of Life and to live eternally. In this way, we seek to “extend
the transforming presence of the Kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Confessional
This means that we have a written confession of faith which we believe to be a
good and accurate summary of the Bible’s teaching. Our confession consists of
the Westminster Confession of Faith and the Larger Catechism and Shorter
Catechism. These documents are not without flaw; yet we believe they do
contain carefully worded summaries of the Bible’s content. All ruling and
teaching elders in the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) must vow that they
hold to these standards and are required to indicate to their presbyteries or
sessions where they take exceptions. It is important to note that every church
has a confession, formal or informal, even though some claim they have “no
confession but Christ” or “no creed but the Bible.” Every church summarizes its
convictions in some form in order to distinguish its members from those who are
not believers or those who do not believe in their church’s distinctives.

HYMN OF ADORATION
Before The Throne of God Above
Standing
Before the throne of God above
I have a strong and perfect plea.
A great high Priest whose Name is Love
Who ever lives and pleads for me.
My name is graven on His hands,
My name is written on His heart.
I know that while in Heaven He stands
No tongue can bid me thence depart;
No tongue can bid me thence depart.
Hebrews 7:25
“Consequently,
he is able to
save to the
uttermost
those who
draw near to
God through
him, since he
always lives to
make
intercession for
them.”
When Satan tempts me to despair
And tells me of the guilt within,
Upward I look and see Him there
Who made an end of all my sin.
Because the sinless Savior died
My sinful soul is counted free.
For God the just is satisfied
To look on Him and pardon me;
To look on Him and pardon me.
Romans 8:34
“Who is to
condemn?
Christ Jesus is
the one who
died—more
than that, who
was raised—
who is at the
right hand of
God, who
indeed is
interceding for
us.”
Behold Him there the risen Lamb,
My perfect spotless righteousness,
The great unchangeable I AM,
The King of glory and of grace,
One in Himself I cannot die.
My soul is purchased by His blood,
My life is hid with Christ on high,
With Christ my Savior and my God!
With Christ my Savior and my God!

Pastor: What is the work of creation?
People: The work of creation is, God’s making all things of
nothing, by the word of his power, in the space of six
days, and all very good.
Pastor: How did God create man?
People: God created man male and female, after his own
image, in knowledge, righteousness, and holiness,
with dominion over the creatures.

done, and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart and mind and

We have not fully loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We have not always had in us the mind of Christ.
You alone know how often we have grieved you by wasting
your gifts, by wandering from your ways, by forgetting your

Renew us in the grace and strength of your Holy Spirit,
for the sake of Jesus Christ your Son, our Savior.

WORSHIP THROUGH GIVING
We Give Our Tithes and Offerings
The offering is a way for Christians to support the church’s
mission and ministry. Christians give back to God a portion of
all the resources which God has given. We give as an act of
faith and gratitude in response to God’s grace to us. Sitting
We include
Tithes and
Offering in the
service because
we view it as a
means of
participating in
worship.

We give our offering hopefully, hoping that you can
use these gifts, hoping that these gifts can further
your kingdom, hoping that your kingdom will come.

PREACHING OF GOD’S WORD
From the
English
Standard
Version
(London:
Crossway,
2010)
As the Bible is
the primary
means by
which God
speaks to and
edifies His
people, we
read and listen
to the
Scriptures
together in
worship. In
ancient Israel
and the early
church,
services of
worship were
organized for
the public
reading of
Scripture - a
practice vital to
building up the
community of
faith.
A sermon is not
just a teaching
for living; it is
mainly a time
when Christ
encounters His
people through
His Word.

HYMN OF RESPONSE
Joy To The World
Joy to the world! The Lord is come:
let earth receive her King;
let every heart prepare him room,
and heav'n and nature sing,
and heav'n and nature sing
and heav'n, and heav'n and nature sing.
Joy to the earth! The Savior reigns:
let men their songs employ;
while fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains
repeat the sounding joy,
repeat the sounding joy,
repeat, repeat the sounding joy.
No more let sins and sorrows grow,
nor thorns infest the ground;
he comes to make his blessings flow
far as the curse is found,
far as the curse is found,
far as, far as the curse is found.
He rules the world with truth and grace,
and makes the nations prove
the glories of his righteousness,
and wonders of his love,
and wonders of his love,
and wonders, wonders of his love.

GOD COMMUNES WITH US
The Lord’s Supper
Communion is a sign and seal for those who believe in Jesus Christ alone for
the forgiveness of sin. It's not for good people. It's for you if you believe and
embrace that you are worse and more messed up than you ever dare to admit;
and yet you are more loved and accepted by our Savior than you had ever
dared to hope - this is because of the life, the death and the resurrection of
Jesus for you. You will be invited to come forward. We serve wine, but also offer grape juice
for those who prefer for reasons of personal conviction. Children are welcome to come with their parents. Each child should talk with
the elders about his or her belief in Christ before taking the Lord's Supper.
Please contact us to do that at a future date. If you are not taking the Lord's Supper with us today, we don't want this to be
an awkward time. You can come forward and an elder will pray with you or you
may stay seated and pray one of the prayers provided on the next page. We're
glad you're here today. Words of Institution
Pastor: Let us proclaim the mystery of faith:
People: Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.
Pastor: Christ, our Passover, has been sacrificed for us.
People: Therefore, let us keep the feast.
Pastor: The gifts of God are for the people of God. Come eat and drink with
thanksgiving.

GOD COMMUNES WITH US
The prayers below are provided as guides for your
silent, individual prayer during the Lord’s Supper
PRAYER FOR THOSE SEARCHING FOR THE TRUTH
Lord Jesus, you claim to be the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Grant that I might
be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing
so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open me to the
reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent and
convincing, and that leads to the life you promise. Amen.
PRAYER OF FAITH
Lord Jesus Christ, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever dared
admit, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope.
I thank you for paying my debt on the cross, taking what I deserved in order to
offer me complete forgiveness. Knowing that you have been raised from the
dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as my Savior and Lord. Amen.
PRAYER OF COMMITMENT
Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in a life of committed discipleship
in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your
people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen.

All People That On Earth Do Dwell
All people that on earth do dwell,
Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice,
Him serve with fear, His praise forthtell;
Come ye before Him and rejoice.
The Lord, ye know, is God indeed;
Without our aid He did us make.
We are His folk, He doth us feed,
And for His sheep He doth us take.
Oh, enter, then, His gates with praise,
Approach with joy His courts unto;
Praise, laud, and bless His name always.
For it is seemly so to do.
For why? The Lord, our God, is good;
His mercy is forever sure.
His truth at all times firmly stood
And shall from age to age endure.
