“The Long Island Aquarium never got
involved with any music before, and we
wanted to bring in a big act,” says Bryan
DeLuca, executive director. “This is a
good band for this type of setting.”
The band is set to perform in the
heart of the aquarium, right next to the
piranha tank. The main floor will serve
as general admission space ($45, $35 in
advance) with a cash bar and finger
food for sale. The second level is
reserved for VIP seating ($75), near the
shark tank, which includes a buffet
dinner and open bar. Admission
includes full access to the aquarium’s
indoor exhibits, which attendees can

Will the sound affect the fish? “It will

RARE VENUE
For the Maniacs, playing in an
aquarium is a first.
“It’s quite unique for us,” says bassist
Steve Gustafson. “Another special
show was when we played out in the
desert 15 kilometers from the Iraq
border in Kuwait for a USO show.”
The band promises a 90-minute gig
featuring signature songs such as

lternative pop band 10,000 Maniacs will feel like it’s in “20,000
Leagues Under the Sea” when the group performs Saturday at
a rare venue — the Long Island Aquarium & Exhibition Center
in Riverhead. The concert is part of the final weekend of Winterfest’s
Live on the Vine series, in which more than 70 music acts have been
performing at various East End locations during the past six weeks.
“What’s the Matter Here?,” complete
with a horn section.
For many, the show will be a
nostalgic trip through the ’80s and ’90s.
“Music has the ability to make you
time-travel,” says lead singer-violinist
Mary Ramsey. “It brings you back
pretty quickly, and it still has its place
in the present.”

Ramsey was playing with the
band as a violinist, featured on its
MTV “Unplugged” TV special and
album, then soon slid over to the
microphone, replacing Merchant.
“It was a pretty natural transition. We all live near each other in
western New York, and we are
simpatico,” says Ramsey. “Things
kind of just happened.”
Today the Maniacs have a new
album, “Twice Told Tales,” a collection of traditional British Isles folk
songs. Concert attendees will get to
hear them debut new tunes like
“She Moved Through the Fair” and
“Canadee-i-o.”

MORE TO COME
This concert is just the first wave
of music splashing through the
Long Island Aquarium. In July, a
new “Rockin’ on the River” outdoor
concert series will kick off in the
back of the aquarium, with dinner
being served.
“We will change up the genres
from week to week,” says DeLuca.
“The music will range from country to reggae to rock.”

MANIAC MEMORIES
The band formed at upstate
Jamestown Community College in
1981, when Gustafson was running
the campus radio station with
keyboardist Dennis Drew. Both
guitarist Robert Buck, who died in
2000, and original singer, Natalie
Merchant, were listeners. Eventually, the four formed a band with
guitarist John Lombardo and drummer Tim Edborg.
“We’d work for $100 plus pizza
and beer,” recalls Gustafson. “We
even slept on people’s floors while
touring up and down the East
Coast.”
After hit albums “In My Tribe,”
“Blind Man’s Zoo” and “Our Time
in Eden,” Merchant left in 1993 to
pursue a solo career.
“We were having way too much
fun back in those days,” says
Gustafson. “We’d be in the front of
the bus watching a football game,
shooting Nerf Basketball against
the window while drinking beer.
She [Merchant] would be in the
back lounge learning languages. We
were different that way.”
