Reading is good for you !!
You will need to use books, as well as computers at Manor
High School. Computers are great for producing your work,
and for getting really up to date information on lots of
subjects, but to really help you improve your knowledge of the
various subjects you will study while you are at school here,
you need to read books as well.
Our school Library is welcoming, friendly and comfortable,
and we have an excellent range of Fiction, and Non-Fiction
books for you to choose from.
Remember, reading about topics will give you lots of
background information, so you get to know more about your
subjects, and reading Fiction books will broaden your
horizons, and you will also get that ‘feel good’ experience
when you get to the end of the story you chose.
Our Library is here for everyone to use. We want you to be a
strong, independent Learner, and a Life-long Reader. So get
yourself down to the Library, and get into a book.
HAPPY READING EVERYONE.

Our library
computer system
At Manor High School, we use Softlink’s reliable, easy to use
web-based Library management system, called Oliver.
Books are loaned to you with your with your E-Card.
Reservations for books can be made easily.
Email Overdue notices are regularly sent to you for any books
you have not returned by their due date. If you receive one
of these, you will need to get the overdue books to the
Library as soon as possible, as other pupils may be waiting to
read these books.
You can check on all your loans with the help of the Librarian,
Mrs. Wright.
You can also find out what books are available in the Library
through the Oliver system. The Librarian can advise you how
to do this.
page 3
e-cards
and the
library
Manor High School is a cashless school. All of our pupils are
issued with an E-Card when they first start at Manor. This card
is multi-use. You use it to pay without cash for your lunches,
print out your work , and it is used as your LIBRARY CARD.
With your card, you can borrow up to four books, and, if required,
a Library Laptop computer, which is loaned for 1 lesson time at a
time, if a teacher has given you permission.
The E-Card is part of your school uniform, and you must have it
with you at all times.
Your E-Card has a unique number, and must not be used to borrow
books for other pupils. You are responsible for the loan and
return of your own books.
If your E-card is lost, a replacement can be bought at Reception.
The number change of your new card then needs to be registered
by the Librarian before it can be used. Try keeping your E-Card
on one of our school lanyards, also available from Reception.
Wearing it round your neck means you will never be without your
E-Card in school.
Page 4
What can you borrow ?
You can borrow up to 2 Fiction Books,
and up to 2 Non-Fiction books at a time.
BOOKS
AT Any TIME
Library Laptop computers, Magazines, and Newspapers,
Reference books and Quick Choice books are for use in school
only, and cannot be loaned for pupils to take home.
Page 5
Magazines and newspapers
We have lots of magazines for you to look at, and we also have the
national daily newspaper, the Times, our local daily newspaper, the
Leicester Mercury, and the weekly First News. You can keep up to
date with the news and read these any time you are in the Library.
Here are some of our magazines….
…and some of our pupils in the Library with the newspapers.
Page 6
Loan periods
We lend our books out for up to
weeks. A
return date will be stamped inside the book, when the
book is issued, so you know when each book has to be
returned.
If you haven’t finished reading it by this date, bring it back
and RENEW it. You can borrow it to read for 3 more weeks.
If a book is not returned by the next date, it becomes
OVERDUE. You will be sent an Email overdue notice, and once
this has been received, you must try to return the book as
soon as possible. Never take a book out of the Library
without having it issued on your E-Card. If you do this, the
book cannot be found on our Loan system, and we will think it
is missing from the Library.
Page 7
Overdue loans
If you still have not returned your library book by the last date
stamped on the issue label, your book will be overdue. Until you return
the book, you will not be able to loan any other books, or borrow a
Library Laptop computer, even if a teacher has sent you to borrow
one.
You will be sent an overdue notice via your Emails. This is to remind
you to return the overdue book immediately.
Remember that other pupils may be waiting to read the book. At the
moment, here are no fines for overdue books, so please try to return
your books promptly.
If you have lost or damaged a book, you will have to replace it, or pay
for it. Please see the Librarian if this happens so she can advise you
on the best way to clear up any problems in doing this.
All your library books MUST be returned at the end of the school
year, or paid for if they are lost, or damaged. If you do not do this,
you will not be able to borrow anything next year.
Page 8
Reservations
Once you have read your books, please return them
quickly, as other pupils will be waiting to read them.
We do operate a reservation system in the Library, so
you can join a waiting system for popular books. Please
ask the Librarian to do this.
Remember, as the loan period for a book is 3 weeks, you
may have to wait for at least up to this period for the
book you have reserved to be returned by the last
borrower. You will be notified by Email when your book
is available for you to borrow. Collect it promptly
please.
Page 9
when can you use the library?
Books can be loaned, returned, or renewed whenever
the Library is open. You can do this at Break, between
11.00-11.20 a.m. and at Lunch, between 12.20-12-55 p.m.
and also after school, until 3.30 p.m. You will also have
one of your ENGLISH periods in the Library, at least
once in your timetabled lessons, and books can be
loaned and returned here as well. This is usually done at
the ISSUE DESK, but if there is no one available there
to loan a book, you need to find Mrs. Wright, the
Librarian, in her Office, and she will return, loan or
renew your Books for you.
page 10
COMPUtERS IN THE LIBRARY.
We have 16 computers available for you to work within
the Library. You can use these in lesson times if a
teacher has booked a session for you.
At Breaks and Lunch you can access the computers to
do research, or homework.
Please be aware that there is a one person per
computer policy operating in the Library.
We do not allow pupils to play games on these machines,
as there are always so many people wanting to work on
them at any time.
If you do not follow our rules, and you are found playing
unsuitable games, you will be asked to leave the Library.
Page 11
laptop computers in the library
The Laptop Computers are used in lesson time only, if a
teacher sends you to borrow one. You must have a valid
E-Card and you will not be able to borrow one without
your E-Card, or if you have an overdue Library book.
They are NOT available to use at Break or Lunchtimes.
Page 12
Homework clubs
We run HOMEWORK CLUB sessions every Break, from
11.00-11.20 a.m. and also every Lunch between 12.20 and
12.55 p.m.in the Library.
You can come in to return or borrow books, sit on our
comfy chairs to read, use the tables to research from
books, or do Homework.
On a wet day, you will hear a 3 bell signal. This indicates a ‘wet Break’
or a ‘wet Lunch’. When this happens, the Library will be closed, and
Homework Clubs are cancelled. You should move either back to your
Form Room, at Break, or to your Wet Weather Base at Lunchtimes.
Lunchtime bases are colour coded according to which House you are
in, and the colour of your E-Card matches this.
Wet weather does not affect the before, or after school Homework
Clubs.
Page 13
Out of school time homework clubs
Homework Club sessions also take place in the Library before and
after school.
If you want to attend the Before School Homework Club, you must
have a signed letter from your parents, or guardians, giving
permission. This is needed before a morning Homework Club pass is
given. Sessions start from 7.50 a.m. and you must enter school
through the Main doors, show your pass, and go to the supervised
session in the Library. At the moment, there is no charge for this
activity.
After-School Homework Clubs run every day, from 3.05-4.30 p.m.
You can stay after school in the Library to read, change your Library
books, or catch up with work, but if you are going to do this, we
advise you to make sure your parents, or carers know, otherwise they
may worry if you are late home.
The Homework Club Supervisor will ask you, and all other pupils to
sign in, and sign out of all Afterschool Homework club sessions. This
is so we can keep a check of who is staying in school. We take the
safety of all of our pupils very seriously, so please remember to do
this.
Page 14
Displays in the Library
Look out for new displays in the Library to celebrate a special
day, or event. There will often be poems to read, and
interesting books, and stories for you to borrow.
Page 15
Special events in the library.
Sometimes we close the Library because a special event is
taking place. Book Character Day, during Children’s Book
Week, is one of these events held in the Library every year.
All Year 6 and 7’s can come to school dressed as their
favourite book character, and take part in exciting activities
during the day.
We hold our annual Book Fair in here too. We have lots of
fantastic books for sale, and you can come and buy yourself a
new book.
Page 16
Looking after your
library books .
You are responsible for all the books you borrow from the library.
Take care when you are reading books and magazines. They can be
read and enjoyed by lots of people if you treat them like they were
your own books.
You are asked NOT to eat or drink in the Library please, as food and
liquid can damage books and furniture, and especially computers.
If you damage a book, you DO have to pay for it. Mrs. Wright checks
all books when she loans them out to you, and she can always tell if
you have damaged a book while you had it out on loan.
If you lose a book, you will have to pay for it.
Do NOT borrow books for friends on your E-Card. If your friend
loses or damages the book, YOU will have to pay for it !
HERE ARE JUST A FEW OF THE BOOKS THAT HAVE BEEN DAMAGED BY PUPILS, AND YES, THEY
DID HAVE TO PAY FOR THEM !
We have to throw books away if you return them with pages that are
loose, torn, or cut out, and if you have spilt liquid on them, they often
go crinkly and mouldy.
NO-ONE WANTS TO BORROW A GRUBBY BOOK. TRY TO LOOK AFTER OUR LIBRARY
BOOKS AS IF THEY WERE YOUR OWN BOOKS PLEASE.
Page 17
bookmarks are good for books.
Try using a BOOKMARK to keep your place in a book.
NEVER turn the corners of the pages over as it makes them look
tatty very quickly, and spoils the book !
We do sometimes have bookmarks available for you in the Library. You could
also try making your own special bookmarks to find your page in your books.
Page 18
Lost your library book ?
tell the librarian .
Don’t be scared. Talk to someone about it. Share your problem with
someone who can help you.
Ask Mrs Wright if your book has been handed back to the Library.
Someone might have found it, and already thoughtfully returned it
without you knowing.
If you cannot find your Library book, try checking in your bag, or in
your Form Room first. You can also ask your Form Tutor, to ask the
whole class, during your tutor time, if anyone has seen your book.
Try looking for it at home. Ask your parents if they have seen it, as it
might have been tidied away. Has a brother or sister ‘borrowed’ it ?
Have you looked under your bed ?
Many books that are ‘lost’ end up under there !
Be prepared to pay for the book if you cannot find it. You could pay
for the book yourself, or you could ask your parents for help with the
money. You can bring in the total replacement cost in CASH, or if
your parents want you to pay with a cheque, it must be made payable
to ‘MANOR HIGH SCHOOL’ and given to the Librarian. Any money
you are asked to pay will go towards buying a new copy of your missing
book to put into the Library. If the book turns up later, you will be
able to get a refund, as long as the book is not damaged.
You could also purchase a replacement book. Ask the Librarian how to
do this.
Page 19
Donations
.. Yes please !!
Books and magazines get more expensive, so we would be delighted to
accept offers of any reading material you may not need any more at
home, for use in our Library. We especially like to receive sports, car,
or bike magazines, as these are very avidly used by our readers, and
sadly, soon fall to bits.
If you do have anything you would like to donate to our Library,
please contact our Librarian, Mrs Wright, to arrange collection
details.
This is a small, but vital way which you can help all the pupils at Manor
to enjoy the ‘Reading Experience’.
Thank you, if you can help us with any donations.
Page 20
Now you know all
about our library .
Our Library is a place for quiet study, relaxed reading, and for
catching up with schoolwork. In order to keep it a pleasant place to
be in, we ask you not to use the Library as a short cut to get to your
next lesson. Please move round the outside of the school to get there,
unless you hear the 3 bell signal to tell you that is a wet day.
Don’t forget, if you need help to find a book, have forgotten your ECard, or lost a book, or have any problems with using our Library,
please come and ask Mrs Wright, the Librarian, for assistance.
We welcome everyone who wants to read and enjoy books, or access
information in our Library, and we hope you will find pleasure in
independent learning, while you are here at Manor High School.
