What approaches, tools, applications and local examples are available to use and learn from? This workshop shares the experience of the local UVic Community Mapping Collaboratory (CMC) and Common Ground Network with faculty, students, indigenous communities, NGOs, municipalities, Green Map and other national-‐global partners over the past 18 years. UVIC Historian John Lutz gives an overview of the power and potential of community mapping for research and teaching and is joined by Kevin Paul-‐ WSANEC poet, and community scholar who speaks to the power of culture and place. Local community mapping project leaders from Fernwood and Oak Bay share their stories and are joined by Lekwungen (Songhees and Esquimalt) community leaders who will share their ideas for new local mapping projects. Understanding and Advancing Software Innovations and Solutions led by Peter Keller (UVic Geography) There exists an ever-‐evolving and exciting number of software options that could support community mapping with different functionalities, compatibilities and ease of use. What are those options? How do they differ? What would an ideal software solution look like? What are the issues? This workshop will bring together software developers, users and community to share their stories, learn about their experiences, and brainstorm a development agenda for the future. The outcome of the workshop is to learn from each other, to identify a list of criteria and functionalities required to support community mapping, to gain insights into what choices are out there, and to dream about solutions of tomorrow. There are over 900 Green Map projects around the world and many in Victoria and the CRD. Jon Corbett: Associate Professor in Community, Culture and Global Studies at UBC Okanagan and the co-‐director of the Centre for Social, Spatial and Economic Justice, Jon uses community mapping around the world as an engaged research method for social justice, participatory planning and indigenous rights.
