Neighborhood
By: SPL Content Coordinator Delia McMullen
As I sat down to write this note, we had just ended a week
of March weather extremes. The Queen City’s temperature dropped from 68 degrees during the day to a low of 36
degrees by evening. As a strong “backdoor” cold front moved
in, the temperature fell 22 degrees in just 19 minutes! While
we can’t complain like Boston and other northeastern cities, Charlotte has had its share of wintry weather this year.
Snow days, delayed openings, canceled events – you name it –
I for one am ready to get back to normal!

I recently noticed the daffodils in my backyard peeking up out
of the icy grass. Charlotte’s Bradford pear trees are beginning to
bud, and pansies provide a burst of color throughout our beautiful area.

P
ainter and local artist Heidi Kirschner has
been wielding a paintbrush almost her entire
life. By the time she was five years old, she had
already developed the ability to put onto canvas or
paper whatever she happened to be looking at. At
age 11, she received her first award recognizing her
talent for fine art. However, it wasn’t until years later
that she was able to present the skills she’d practiced
and honed in her own voice. “I guess that just takes
time and patience,” she explains, “not to mention
letting go of expectations and ego!”
Originally from New York—Long Island, to be exact—Heidi
is one of a family of six. After graduating from high school,
she was granted a scholarship to study art at New York State
University at Geneseo. While there, she majored in Fine Arts
and presented her first solo exhibit showcasing her work.
Heidi describes her unique style as “a combination of highlytexturized pallet work, atop layers of blended brush work,”
and notes that her chosen genre is often referred to as “contemporary landscapes with an ethereal quality.” Looking at
her work, it’s easy to see why ethereal immediately comes to
mind. The combination of contrasting and complementary
colors, while abstract, evokes imagery of wide-open plains,
shadowy forests, otherworldly waterscapes and other eerily
beautiful scenes out of nature.
NeighborhoodNews
In the long-term, Heidi hopes to keep increasing her gallery
representation and also hopes to keep growing personally:
“That means taking the time to honor the steps that need to
be taken in order to move forward, because, as we know in
life, we are ever changing. And if we can find the beauty in
those changes, that’s art!”
She notes that her success wouldn’t be possible without the
community’s growing desire to support talented local artists.
For details on her studio’s grand opening, visit www.heidikirschner.com or www.jwvartists.com to view current works
or submit commissions.
To have your business featured in an upcoming issue of SouthPark Life, please email
Zane Odom at [email protected].
HEIDI KIRSCHNER
F INE ART
Heidi draws a great deal of inspiration from light. She finds
that it can transform even the simplest subject matter into
something visually beautiful. She says, “It’s almost like putting a spotlight on something mundane and magnifying its
gorgeous simplicity.”

About 13 years ago, Heidi decided to make the move to
Charlotte, where she is currently renovating a new studio
after moving from her previous location on East Boulevard.
This new space is large and open-concept, giving her the
space she needs to paint her larger works—which also happen
to be her most sought-after pieces—and to continue teaching,
something she has come to find extremely rewarding.
Her new studio will celebrate its grand opening in May, and
Heidi will showcase her new works, have live music and provide plenty of wine to go around. If wine got your attention,
Heidi is also currently teaching her Tipsy Canvas classes at
Petite Philippe, a wine shop on Selwyn Avenue, while her
new studio is undergoing renovations.

cup diced strawberries. Divide batter among 12 paper lined

Add 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons strawberry puree to a small
saucepan. Heat mixture over medium-low heat, and simmer,
stirring occasionally until reduced by about 2/3 to 3 tablespoons,
about 10-14 minutes. (Measure and if it isn’t quite 3 tablespoons then return and continue to simmer; if it’s not reduced
to correct amount it will make frosting runny.) Pour reduced
puree into a small bowl, then freeze until cool (stir occasionally
for even chilling; it will chill quickly in the freezer since it’s such
a small amount). In the bowl of an electric stand mixer fitted
with the paddle attachment, whip unsalted and salted butter
until very pale and fluffy (nearly white). Stop and scrape down
bowl occasionally throughout entire mixing process if not using
the paddle attachment that constantly scrapes bowl. Mix in 1

cup powdered sugar, then blend in 3 tablespoons reduced strawberry puree, vanilla extract and optional red food coloring. Add
remaining 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar and continue to mix until
frosting is pale and fluffy, adding in an additional 1/4 cup powdered sugar if needed to reach desired consistency.
Place a small mound of small diced strawberries on top center
of cupcakes. Pipe frosting around and over berries then decorate
with a whole small strawberry. Store cupcakes in an airtight
container.
*To make the strawberry puree, puree strawberries in a food processor
then measure out amount needed. For both the puree for cupcakes and
frosting it was about 10 medium strawberries, but that amount will
vary depending on the size of your strawberries.

Marcy Gregg

Long before I met Marcy Gregg, I had always heard
her name. We had mutual friends, both lived in
Foxcroft and were Southern Methodist University
graduates. Strangely enough, we both had exotic
parrots. Definitely not the usual things you have
in common with someone! When our paths finally
crossed, I felt like I had known her long before. We
officially met at a Bible study class where Marcy
shared her story about how she was given a second
chance at life—but more on that later.
Marcy and her husband, Dev Gregg, are both Texas natives and
met while Marcy was studying studio art at SMU in Dallas. They
got married in 1980 and relocated from Dallas to Charlotte in
1988 with their two young sons, Cason and Conner. They settled
into their first home in the Cotswold neighborhood.
It was in 1990 that their world changed. Marcy gave birth to
their precious baby girl, Callie, but before leaving the hospital
Marcy spiked a dangerously high fever and within hours was in
a coma and on a ventilator to remain alive. She had had a sinus
infection at the same time she delivered Callie, and she blew
bacteria into her brain causing severe bacterial spinal meningitis. This condition resulted in the loss of much of Marcy’s
memory. She had to rebuild her identity as a mother, wife,
daughter and friend.
She slowly put the pieces of her life back together again. In
1993 Marcy started her own successful corporate consulting
business, empowering business professionals based on her own
experiences. As their family outgrew their Cotswold house,
they searched for the perfect neighborhood in which to raise
their three children. They had many friends in Foxcroft and
joined the Foxcroft Swim and Tennis Club. The Greggs loved
the feel of the neighborhood and the fact that their children
could ride their bikes to the swim club. They bought their
home on Silver Bell Drive in 1995. Marcy said it was the best
place to raise her family. All three of her children graduated
from Myers Park High School and are now off leading busy
lives of their own. Cason, their oldest son, graduated from the
University of Georgia and is now an attorney living in Atlanta.
Conner, their second son, graduated from Elon University and
is a personal trainer here in Charlotte. Their daughter, Callie,
graduated from Ole Miss and is now a wine consultant living
in Austin, Texas.
Marcy, who was determined to make the most of the life that
had been restored to her, sold her consulting business in 2006
and returned to her true passion, art. Marcy’s artwork has quickly
gained attention in the art world. Her paintings are multifaceted
explorations of the intrinsic beauty of form and color through
her chosen medium of fine oil paints. Her work, which is mostly
abstract, reflects her love of color and texture and won her the
2013 Charlotte Art With Heart Emerging Artist Award. You
can find her most days at her studio in the Artisan Building in
the South End area, and her artwork can be found at Anne Neilson Fine Art (Charlotte), Huff Harrington Fine Art (Atlanta)
and Gallery 1404 (Chattanooga).
Marcy’s own words best describe her gratitude in God’s healing
power and the way she feels when she paints: “I experience great
joy when I stand in front of a canvas. In my miraculous healing,
God gave me a second chance at life, and each day that I paint
I have a second chance to pursue my love of art. I am motivated
by color and texture. It is what inspires me. It is my goal in each
painting to leave something to the imagination…lines lost or an
unexpected perspective found. I want my viewer intrigued.”
Well, Marcy, we are all intrigued by you, your story, your will to survive, your dedication to your family and by your beautiful artwork
which inspires us all to live in the present and with much gratitude!

From the invention of electricity to the introduction of the Apple
iPhone, many of the greatest things this world has ever known
began simply as one person’s dream. The same can be said for
Tiny, the latest dream turned retail venture for longtime Charlotte
business owner and retailer Carolyn Hotham. Carolyn had long
dreamed of finding a tiny space where she could showcase an
assortment of beautiful, tiny things. This dream, paired with her
being the mother of three grown daughters, led her to realize that
the one thing the Charlotte shopping scene had always seemed to
be missing was a high-end designer children’s boutique.

While on the hunt for her perfect tiny space, Carolyn got
wind last spring that the location which originally served as
the carriage house of The Villa on Providence had become
available. Not only was this the perfect space to showcase
designer children’s wear, but its location in the heart of Eastover (one of Charlotte’s most sought-after neighborhoods)
truly made securing this space a dream come true. Carolyn
headed to NYC to procure the best of the best for the kids of
the Queen City, including lines from well-known designers
such as Chloe, emile et ida, Louise Misha, Stella McCartney,
Little Marc Jacobs, Little Lux, Marie Chantal, Mini Rodini,
Mini Melvin, NuNuNu, Enfant Rykiel, Paige Lauren, Pink
Chicken, Scotch R’Belle, Scotch Shrunk and Twine+Twig,
just to name a few.
By mid-September, the walls of our tiny space had been
splashed with fresh coats of lavender paint, and each of Carolyn’s tiny treasures had found the perfect place to be showcased
among the racks of designer children’s clothes. The time had
finally come for “Spotty Dog” to assume his post out front,
offering a friendly welcome to all who cross Tiny’s threshold.
In the days since our grand opening, we have received a warm
welcome from the neighborhood and Charlotte consumers,
many saying to us, “I am so glad a store like this is finally here,
for we have struggled for so long to find high-end designer
children’s clothing in the Queen City.” We are thrilled by
the warm welcome and appreciate the feedback, and have listened to what you have to say. From what you have shared it is
quite clear: Tiny will best serve the Charlotte community by
using every inch of our space to offer a full range of clothing
(boys and girls), accessories, gifts and specialty items for all
those 0-12 years (instead of stopping at age six as originally
planned). We hope that forevermore when you are looking for
high-end children’s and early teen fashions, accessories, shoes
and gifts, you will think of Tiny as Charlotte’s one-stop shop
for everything for your tiny ones to teens.
If you have not yet made it by the store, we invite you to stop
by anytime Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. We
would also like to cordially invite all of you to Tiny’s First
Annual Spring Fling! We will have refreshments, face paint,
games, pony rides (pending landlord approval), prizes and
a Spring Fling discount too! Spring Fling will be held on
Saturday, May 2, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., at The Villa, 715 Providence
Road, Suite G4, Charlotte, NC 28207. For more information

MATTERS
Eat Your Broccoli!
By: Sodoma Law Attorney Nadia Margherio, Principal
Parents often struggle with the decisions they make
every day when raising children. They contemplate
and consider the ramifications of each decision to
ensure they are making the best one, the right one. So
what happens when parents separate and divorce, and
parenting out of one household quickly changes to
co-parenting out of two households?
Sodoma Law Attorney, Nadia Margherio
Whether parents work tirelessly to compromise and reach a parenting agreement or have to fight it out in the courtroom, the
end result is often the same – an order is entered that ultimately
sets out a parenting plan that is determined to be in the best
interest of the children. Big question: What happens when your
child says, “You can’t make me go to Mom’s house!” or “I am not
going to Dad’s house!” Even where there is not physical abuse or
other domestic violence, or abuse of drugs or alcohol, your child
suddenly (or over time) refuses to spend time with the other
parent. The child may have overheard a parent say negative
comments about the other parent. The child may be naturally
aligned with one parent based on his age and gender at the time.
Regardless, that child takes a hard and firm stance, digs his feet
in the sand and refuses to go. Now what?
There are usually two choices: support your child’s position
and don’t force him to go, or tell your child there is no choice
and, as his parent, you encourage and, if necessary, force him
to go and spend time with the other parent. While the former
choice is the easy way out, it may be the choice that will cause
more problems down the road. The latter choice, while clearly
the more difficult, is most likely and more often the right
choice to make. We teach our children the difficult lessons that
in turn teach positive morals and values. Outside of extenuating circumstances, allowing a child to make the choice to not
see one parent is not a healthy choice or one that is in that
child’s best interest.
Sodoma Law practices in all areas of Family Law, to include Assisted Reproductive Technology, as well as Estate Planning, Business and Bankruptcy.
Just as we parents teach our children to “eat their broccoli,” to
respect their elders, to give back to the community and to help
a friend in need, we too must ensure that they spend time with
the other parent. Children should not be shouldered with the
responsibility of making that decision or feeling like the decision is theirs to make. Emotions run high during the divorce
process, not only for parents but also for children. Often,
regardless of age, children are forced to navigate tumultuous
times, based on circumstances completely out of their control,
while they are also likely going through the daily pressures of
childhood, adolescence or puberty. Parents must make the right
decision even when children express resistance. As is often
said, “decisions are hard to make, especially when it’s a choice
between what you want and what is right.”
Nadia A. Margherio is a practicing attorney and principal at Sodoma Law, P.C. in the Family Law and Assisted Reproductive Technology practice areas. She is a member of both the North Carolina
and Pennsylvania (inactive) state bars and is a certified Parenting
Coordinator and Guardian ad litem. Nadia holds a Bachelor’s degree
from Binghamton University, State University of New York, a

Loving something so lively positively creates the strongest
connection; when that connection is broken, it may very well be
one of the hardest things to go through in a lifetime.
Months after the devastating loss of our beloved Annie, whom
we had adopted as a puppy from the Humane Society in Klamath
Falls, OR, we were still so sad and felt such a void in our lives.
Weeks went by this last summer, and we would long to hear her
scampering across the backyard, tongue hanging out, panting
from her long runs; her Greyhound blood obliging her to do so.
We decided we couldn’t dwell on the past any longer. We had
to move forward and consider introducing another pet into our
family because our house was going to be empty soon. You see,
my older sister, Mary Claire, and brother, Hunt, were going back
to college, and I would be the only one left at home…with my
parents. Even though I would be graduating in about two years, it
sounded like a good idea to get a puppy.
After we helped my sister, Mary Claire, move back to the University of Georgia, we decided to go see a French bulldog breeder

with whom my mom had been in communication for several
weeks. Her house was located in Lula, GA (about 45 minutes
from Athens), so we decided to take a look at the puppies to see if
one might be a good fit. Mary Claire followed my mom and me,
and upon pulling up to the house, we saw two puppies anxiously
trembling behind the gate, craving some social interaction. Our
eyes locked on one of them: a small brindle-colored puppy sitting in the corner with his ears perked up in attention. Right then
and there, we knew we had found our next dog. We brought him
home, big ears and all, and he is now our friend.
DESIGN YOUR DREAMS.
We struggled to find a name for him. We had lots of Valencia Terrace neighbors that helped us: the McIntoshes, the Walters, the
Woods and the Henegars. Finally my dad came up with “Chet,”
which is short for “Chesty Puller,” one of the most decorated
Marines in American history. He said that Chet walked with such
importance, and “he thinks that he is a big dog.” (Here is a little
history for you: Lewis Burwell “Chesty” Puller was a United States
Marine Corps lieutenant general and one of the most decorated
members of the Marine Corps. Puller is one of two servicemen
ever to be awarded five Navy Crosses. Chesty Puller owned an
English bulldog, and was also awarded the Legion of Merit, Purple Heart, Silver Star, Bronze Star Medal, Distinguished Service
Cross and Air Medal.)
Chet has quickly become a part of the Valencia Terrace neighborhood. He is friends with Murphy, the McIntosh family’s golden
retriever, and he loves to play soccer with the Walters girls, Branson, Stewart and Kemp. He also loves to go on really long walks
and take naps on our laps. The Walters girls and their friends come
over almost every day after school to take him to play soccer and
tag, and he loves them!

Memories Of Mauritius
By: Contributing Writer Missy Erwin Highsmith
Huntington Park residents Mark and Joan Erwin
have enjoyed traveling the world during their 46
years of marriage. When Mark was appointed by
President Clinton as US Ambassador to Mauritius,
Seychelles & Comoros in 1999, they embarked upon
a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The Erwins recall
their time in Mauritius:
It was a big decision to move overseas for two years and leave our
daughters (then 20 and 22), family and friends, pets and home,
but it was an opportunity we knew we could not turn down. In

Mauritius is an African island nation located in the Indian Ocean about 1,200 miles
from the southeast coast of the African continent. It is about the size of Mecklenburg
County, with a population of 1.3 million. Formerly a Dutch, then French, then British
colony, Mauritius gained its independence in 1976. It has the highest per capita income
and highest literacy rate in Africa. The population is about 68 percent Indian, plus
French, Creole, Chinese, English and South African. Residents speak English, French
and Mauritian Creole.
June 1999, we embarked on the 21-hour flight to our new home
almost 10,000 miles away from Charlotte. We shipped 12 crates
of furniture and possessions by sea and set up home in the American Ambassador’s residence, McCarty House, a sprawling white,
Florida-style, hurricane-resistant concrete home on five acres
with a guest house, tennis courts, gardens, a full staff of seven and
even a chicken coop. We kept our Eastover home and came back
for visits three to four times a year.
Our goal for our adventure was to “make a difference, do
good and have fun." We did our best and accomplished
all three goals during our time in Mauritius, helping to
strengthen relationships between these three small countries
and the US. It was an honor to represent our country and the
President. We also made many dear friends and have lifelong
memories to cherish.
Joan Erwin and a friend hosted Whitney Houston, Bobby Brown and their daughter
for a day of shopping in the city. Other high-profile guests included Secretary of
State Madeleine Albright and actor Larry Hagman.
Mauritius is known for its amazing deep sea fishing (marlin, tuna and bonefish). Joan’s
cousin, Doug Taylor, and daughter, Missy Erwin Highsmith, are shown with a recordsetting tuna.
Mark and Joan Erwin took a photo with every group of
visitors to the residence in front of a Peter Max painting
on loan to the embassy. The Erwins have a print of the
painting in their Charlotte home today.
Many friends from Charlotte came to visit including John and Claudia Belk and M.C. and Jeff Pilon (pictured), Bernie and Patsy Farmer,
Bill and Harriet Barnhardt, Billy Wireman and Fountain Odom.
Mark’s sister Pam Morrell and the Erwin’s daughter Missy visited
most often.

Diplomacy is the art of the possible. During our time there, we
helped make Mauritius the gateway to Africa. We put on the
largest trade fair between America and any country in Africa,
and helped Mauritius gain a seat on the U.N. Security Council.
We founded the Mauritius-American Chamber of Commerce
and the equivalent of Habitat for Humanity there.
We returned home in 2001 and decided we liked the privacy
and feel of the residence, so we eventually ended up building a
house on two acres on Huntington Park Drive—complete with
chicken coop!
Joan is happy to be home in Charlotte for good and enjoys spending time with her three granddaughters, Della, Lila and Virginia.
Mark has settled into his latest vocation, writing, and has published
several books including The Practical Ambassador and his memoir,
An Unlikely Journey, which shares further details about their time
overseas. He co-authored two books with famed local artist Bob
Timberlake, Life’s Lessons and Headed Home (all available on
amazon.com).
Mauritius is known for its perfect white sandy beaches with crystal
clear blue water of the Indian Ocean. It also features mountains,
amazing wildlife, breathtaking scenery and almost year-round
sunshine and warm weather. It is often called “The Hawaii of the
Indian Ocean.”

Springtime in Charlotte is one of my favorite times of the year.
Not only does the colorful blooming of unique flowers immediately brighten your day, but the array of adventure and activities that
await right outside of your back door brings constant excitement.
For sports fanatics, nature lovers, museum enthusiasts and busy
families, Charlotte offers activities for everyone. One of my
family’s new favorite adventures is going uptown to the Knights
Stadium for a ball game. Whether we pick up dinner uptown, or
indulge in a hot dog with chili on top, the smell of peanuts and
city skyline never disappoints.
One of the perks of springtime is the beautiful weather that it
often brings. The US National Whitewater Center offers enjoyment for the whole family. Hiking, biking, walking, zipping,
eating and hey - even dancing! From May to September, the
Whitewater Center has its annual River Jam concerts, which are
fun for all ages. April 17- 19 is Tuck Fest, an outdoor competition with live music. To kick off the summer season, don’t miss
the Memorial Day Celebration with corn hole competitions,
live music and fireworks.
Charlotte is lucky enough to have many safe, free and clean
parks including Freedom Park and Bearden Park (one with an
exceptionally good skyline view). Picnics, ladder ball and locals
performing live music create a relaxing evening for a date night
or even a family gathering. Although Charlotte is a booming
banking district with the hustle and bustle of a big city, there
are places where you can easily slip under the trees like the 700+
acre Reedy Creek Nature Preserve. Or take a short drive west
towards Crowders Mountain to unwind and breathe easy.

the newest attraction and summer hit. Summer passes and

One of my favorite qualities about Charlotte as a city is the
different niches there are. The city’s historic South End neighborhood is a hip place to live and play. Between the museums,
farmers’ markets and food trucks, local cafes and booming galleries, this community brings culture, color and life to a big time
city and delivers endless springtime adventures.
As much fun as it is getting outside and exploring Charlotte,
sometimes there is nothing better than taking a walk through
the neighborhood before the pre-summer heat. The paths
through Foxcroft neighborhood take you under the trees and all
around—you can even go through the tunnel under Fairview
Road and over to Ben & Jerry’s!
So whatever it is, get outside! Enjoy the abundance of opportunities that are right outside your doorstep.

Creating Wealth Using Tax
Bracket Optimization
In the past, deferring the recognition of income for as long as possible has
been an effective strategy. Today, with a greater number of tax brackets,
higher rates, itemized deduction and personal exemption phase-outs, as well
as a sur-tax, the deferral strategy can be a lesser attractive option if future
income recognition will push individuals into a higher tax bracket.
Most Roth conversion strategies involve tax bracket arbitrage; reporting
income when your tax rate is lower. For example, if you file your income tax
return as Married Filing Jointly and are in the 25% marginal tax bracket, you
might be better off converting a portion of your IRA to a Roth each year to
completely fill up the 25% bracket. Taking more income and paying taxes in
the present allows you to take less income in the future when Required
Minimum Distributions ("RMD's") might propel you into the next higher tax
bracket. The optimal result can be a “flattening” of your cumulative tax rate
over your lifetime and a significant increase in your portfolio value due to
tax savings. In addition, Roth IRA’s grow tax-free and do not require any
RMDs at age 70 ½, which can allow for greater long-term net worth
accumulation.
.
Who Should Convert?
You will want to consider this strategy if you meet the following criteria:
Friends of UMAR Luncheon – April 14
How to Convert
If you decide you could benefit from a full or partial Roth conversion in any
given year, consider following this strategy:
• Convert only partially to maximize income in your current tax bracket.
A wealth advisor can work with you to figure out the maximum amount you
can convert without pushing you into the next marginal tax bracket. As
income can vary from year to year, you should do this calculation on an
annual basis.
• Pay any tax owed from your taxable accounts. It is important that you
don’t withdraw funds from your converted IRA to pay taxes on the conversion, as you will lose most of the benefit of the conversion. Make sure you
have enough money to pay the estimated tax on the conversion outside of
your IRA account.
Paying taxes now might actually help save on taxes in the future, as well as
allow for additional wealth creation. At Rinehart, we realize that each client’s
situation is unique, and we can assist with deciding if a Roth IRA conversion
is the best option for your situation.

• You are currently retired or are otherwise in a low
income tax bracket. When you convert to a Roth IRA, the
amount that you are converting will be taxed 100% at
ordinary income rates. Therefore, it is best for you to initiate a
Roth conversion in years that you are in a low income tax
bracket.
• You are not yet 70½. Once you turn 70½, your retirement
accounts (traditional IRAs, 401(k)s, etc.) are subject to
RMDs. This means that you are forced to take a specific
amount out of your retirement accounts each year. This often
forces retirees into a much higher tax bracket and unfortunately, the RMD cannot be converted to a Roth IRA.
• You have funds outside of your retirement accounts to
pay for the additional taxes. If you don’t have excess cash
outside of your retirement accounts to pay the tax due on the
Roth conversion, you are not a good candidate for this strategy.

Prior to 2010, converting all or part of your IRA to a Roth IRA was only an
option for those with adjusted gross income of $100,000 or less. Now, the IRS
allows everyone to convert their IRA to a Roth IRA. Unfortunately, most people
shy away from a Roth conversion due to the upfront tax that must be paid on the
IRA funds that are converted.

In The Midst Of Suffering
We Often Find
By: Foxcroft Neighbor Beth Purdy
We all have stories to tell. Each of our lives is a journey, and the
things we experience, think and feel all help to give us our stories.
We each have gifts to share. Some might seem bigger because
they are more public, more easily seen…but the private ones,
which might touch fewer people, are definitely just as vital. I think
it’s really important to listen to these gifts and put them to work.
One of the biggest ways we experience God is through other
people. When we are willing to share ourselves, we in turn share
God. Here is part of me.
To the outside eye it looked like the world was my oyster. I had
lots of friends, was outgoing, enjoyed and did well in school,
was a great athlete and had a real love of life. But in high school
I was also in the beginning stages of a mental illness, and not
until many years later would I be able to look back and recognize it. I didn’t look the part, but it was there.
By my freshman and sophomore years in college it had grown a
bit worse. I even casually asked for some help, but because I still
didn’t fit the picture of what a depressed person would look like,
I kept on going and thought things might settle down. At the
time I didn’t know much about depression and certainly didn’t
know what it could look like. Again, I can’t stress enough that I
didn’t look the part. Like in high school, I still had lots of wonderful things going on in my life.
I went abroad for my junior year and traveled to St. Andrews,
Scotland. Soon after I arrived I could feel myself slipping.
Unlike before, I was no longer teary; now I was numb. The mental pain that had gripped me in years past had simply stopped
and was replaced by nothingness.
I lived in a beautiful flat overlooking the sea, and I would sit for
hours staring out the window. I heard God then. He was telling
me to hang on and that He hadn’t forgotten me. He told me to
trust Him and keep walking. I felt dead. I wanted to die and I
was ready to go. I was utterly exhausted. On good days I wondered how I was going to escape from the pain. On bad days it
was so dark and hopeless that I felt frozen in a black cloud.
That Christmas I wasn’t able to come home, and I ended up in
France for my break. As I was walking around Paris on Christ-

mas Eve, I heard this beautiful music at a nearby church. I went
in and stood at the back. It was breathtaking in its size and
grandeur, and candlelight was everywhere. It was warm, cozy
and peaceful, and I can remember my heart aching for the first
time in months. I was actually feeling something and was no
longer numb. A couple of tears started down my cheek. I stood
there and let my surroundings soak in. I realized in a helpless,
hopeless voice I was saying, “I simply can’t do this any longer. I
can’t keep going.” I was ready to be gone, leave the pain and be
home with God in a majestically peaceful place like the church I
was in right then. I whispered again, “I can’t go on.”
I was looking at the front of the church this whole time and
hadn’t noticed a man holding a young girl—she was maybe
three or four years old. They were about 10 feet in front of me.
The man was facing the front of the church with his back to me,
and the girl was looking over his shoulder.
All of a sudden I met her gaze, and we just stared at each
other for a few seconds. And then, with the slightest gentle
smile and softened eyes, she waved to me. I think of that little
girl as my angel. She helped show me that I wasn’t alone, that
God was with me and that I had to keep fighting. It wasn’t my
time to go yet.
That was over 25 years ago. Little did I know that not only did
that precious little angel save me that day, she would go on to
save me many times over and is saving me still. She helped
shepherd me home that night in Paris, and she continues to
remind me of where home is today.

Cool Renewal Spa
Charlotte Welcomes Popular
Hi-Tech CoolSculpting Spa

The Future Of Bodyshaping
Fitness has become very popular among both men and women.
Everybody knows that if you want to be “cool,” you have to be fit.
Yet, what if being “cool” happened first – and then you were fit?
Most of us would like that plan much better.
The great majority of people dread extra weight gain as one of
the worst things that can happen to us. It may be from lack of
exercise, poor diet, having a baby, or that one inescapable challenge – getting older. No matter how extra fat comes, it can be
very hard making it go.
When businessman John Keen learned of the exciting new
technique of CoolSculpting, he immediately knew it would
be a popular way to drop excess weight. John is the owner of
Cool Renewal Spa, located at the corner of Carmel Road and
Hwy. 51. The spa offers a revolutionary new way to remove
unwanted fat.
The concept of CoolSculpting is very simple, though it was only
developed a few years ago. The process targets specific areas of
unwanted fat, then lowers the temperature of that area, and the
results are phenomenal. Fat cells and lipids crystallize and freeze
faster than other cells. Subjecting them to very cold temperatures causes them to wither up and then be passed out of the
body. No other cells are damaged in the process.
John & Kristyn Keen
“CoolSculpting is totally non-invasive,” said John, “And it
doesn’t take long to do. In some cases, a person will come in
on their lunch hour, get a treatment, and then go right back
to work. There are no major side effects, no drugs, no surgery,
no needles, and no pain. Yet we achieve results that formerly
required at least a day in the hospital with anesthesia, pain killers, and a team of surgeons.”
help them identify the areas of their body that need sculpting.
“Before pictures” are taken and a time is set up for their
CoolSculpting procedure.
The idea of losing unwanted fat in such a simple and inexpensive way has been very appealing to Charlotteans as well as
others. Some patients come in from Greensboro, Davidson, and
other areas because of what they find at CoolRenewal Spa.
A treatment takes about an hour for each part of the body that
needs attention. Most people do 2 – 4 areas. A single treatment
can bring results. Typically, it takes about three weeks to see any
real change, but then the results become more and more obvious
so that, after 10 – 12 weeks, the difference is very noticeable.
“Our specially designed CoolSculpting rooms are very hospitable,” says John, “We have massage chairs, wide screen TVs,
and we even serve them lunch. We want every person to have
the most pleasant experience possible.”
The spa is staying very busy since the word got out six months
ago. While most of their clients are women, about 30 percent
are men. The ideal candidate is the person who, after trying
many diets and exercise plans, still can’t get rid of their “muffin
top, love handles, or spare tire.”
The most common area of the body treated is the paunch that
swells out over the abdomen. It’s one of the hardest areas of fat
to get rid of for many people.
“There are other clinics that offer CoolSculpting. Yet, our
spa is unique in several ways,” John explained, “First, because
CoolSculpting is the only treatment we offer, our technicians
are experts in the process. In addition, we have several sculpting
machines to minimize our patients’ wait time.”
A common treatment procedure begins with a person making
an appointment for a free assessment. At that time, the staff will
“Happy women come back to tell us they dropped a dress size.
Men can wear the pants they were wearing years before. We
enjoy seeing the results and how they affect people,” smiled
John, “So we take ‘After photos’ and let them see the difference
in themselves.”
“The facility is beautiful and the staff at CoolRenewal really
made me feel relaxed during my CoolSculpting treatments.
They know their stuff. My results are amazing. I’ve dropped a
dress size and the fat areas they treated are gone. This was well
worth it for me,” shares Lisa.
To make the process affordable for anyone, CoolRenewal Spa
even offers an interest-free financing plan. And from now until
the end of May, patients can receive an additional 20% discount
off any treatment.
With all they offer, it appears Cool Renewal Spa is becoming
one of the “coolest” new places in Charlotte (pun intended)!
