I hope you all had an enjoyable and restful holiday. This term is always a busy one for our students and staff and of course the short days, cold weather and associated health problems don’t help. Highlights this term include ~ Grade 3 and 5 students participating in NAPLAN testing in May Grade 5/6 camp to Sovereign Hill Gr 3-6 Athletics and Cross Country days Grade 3/4 excursion to Toolangi Forest Whole school St. John’s first aid training Whole school Power of One incursion This is also a busy term for assessment and reporting with mid year student reports and portfolios completed and 3 way conferences in the final week of term. We celebrate Education Week in week 6 with a number of collaborative and multi age activities and our Open Night where students are encouraged to share their learning with family members. Once again Marlborough has been recognised for its achievements and positive school culture. I have been asked to be part of the Principal Preparation Program which is run through the Department of Education and Training. This program is designed for Assistant Principals and other school leaders who are seeking to move into principal roles. As part of the program I have been asked to mentor an assistant principal from a neighbouring school for 4 weeks. Cameron Agars who is currently the AP at Heathmont East PS will be working alongside me for two weeks in term 2 and a further two weeks in term 3 as Principal of Marlborough PS. I know you will all make him welcome. Frog Bog Update When you are next in the school, please take the time to walk down to the south east corner, near the vegetable garden. Our new Frog Bog is looking absolutely amazing. While our grade 3/4 students are still to plant out the gardens and create a “frog friendly” Hardy Crescent, Heathmont Principal – Angie O’Hare area of vegetation, the construction phase is complete. Water from the roof of the senior building is filtered and redirected to the frog bog. Our frogs will be living in a “resort style” environment complete with lush vegetation, huge rocks and of course a safety fence. New seating in and around the frog bog, will enable class groups to use the area as an outdoor classroom. A huge thank you must go to the team of parents and teachers who secured this grant for us and especially to Dave Callow who spent a week of his leave at Marlborough during the break overseeing and coordinating the construction process. New Smoking Bans Smoking will be banned within four metres of an entrance to all primary and secondary schools in Victoria, and within the school grounds, under an amendment to the Tobacco Act 1987. While smoking was banned on the grounds of all Victorian Government schools by the Minister for Education in 2009 via a Ministerial Ban Order, the new bans are enshrined in legislation and will also apply to Catholic and independent schools in Victoria, thereby ensuring a consistent approach across the government and non-government sectors. It is a now a legislative requirement that our school installs ‘No smoking’ signs at all entrances to the school premises.
