PRINCIPAL’S NEWS:

We began the week once again celebrating the resilience and grit shown by our Marshland children. First with water polo on Friday night,
where our C grade team won their game against Chisnallwood Intermediate, and our A grade team won their game against St Andrews.
Then on the Sunday a big group of Marshland children successfully completed the Weetbix tryathlon winning medals and a Rebel Sport
gift voucher for the school.
Also on the weekend, our head Girl, Emily W., was selected for a week long training camp run by the National Talent Centre for Under
13’s in Soccer! A future White Fern in our midst perhaps? It is certainly possible.
Emily R. was named as part of the New Zealand Trampoline Team to compete at the Australian Nationals for Power Tumbling, 11-12
year old girls, in May. Only two people from New Zealand have been selected for power tumbling.
All these children are shining examples of our Marshland learning model. They show true resilience and persistence, resourcefulness,
reciprocity and reflectiveness. They all have what we call a growth mindset where they view mistakes and errors as learning opportunities
to help them go further! They embrace challenges, and view errors as an opportunity to learn something new.
As part of our learning model, we have been learning about how the praise we give children can have a deep effect on their learning. If
we praise children all the time for being clever, or smart, this can lead them to believe that they need to look smart and clever at all costs,
and never fail for fear of people thinking they are not smart or clever, and so they avoid anything challenging.

POLICY REVIEW:
This term we are reviewing our Home Learning Policy. To have a say,
follow the instructions below:

If you don't have internet access, school office staff can easily provide

WACKY HAIR DAY LAST WEEK:
The whole school paraded in their class groups so everyone got a
really good look at the weird and wonderful hairstyles adorned by
children and teachers. It was a very close contest, with Korimako
Kidd coming out as the winning class.
The gold coin donation raised $298.30 for St Johns. Thank you kindly
for supporting this worthwhile cause.

SCHOOL UNIFORM – BLACK SHOES:
A reminder to please ensure that your child
wears the correct uniform to school. Our
school uniform shoes are black, so please
make sure your child wears sensible black shoes to school not
coloured striped ones. Thanks for your support.
NAIL POLISH NOT PERMITTED AT SCHOOL:
Please remember that your child is not allowed to
wear nail polish at school. If children wear nail polish
at the weekend, please make sure this is removed
before they come to school.
SUNHATS AND SUNSCREEN:
Sunhats are compulsory in Terms 1 and Terms
4 each year so please ensure your children bring
their sunhats to school each day. If they are not
wearing a sunhat, children have to stay in shaded areas or
inside their classrooms. Please also make sure your child brings
sunscreen to school.
STATEMENTS:
You can either pay your account in the office by cheque or
cash, or via internet banking.
Our bank account details are – ASB bank, Papanui. The bank
account number is 12-3149-0243776-00.
Please use your child’s Christian and Surname as the
reference.
(Please do not use the reference number that appears on
your statement as our financial computer programme does
not recognize this!) Please note – we do not have Eftpos
facilities at school.
SICKNESS:
If your children are displaying signs of sickness, please keep
them at home. If they have vomiting and/or diarrhea, they
must not return to school until 48 hours after the last
symptoms have disappeared. This is a Ministry of Health
ruling, and must be adhered to, to stop the spread of diseases.

ROAD PATROL – CAN YOU HELP PLEASE?
PARENT HELPERS REQUIRED BEFORE SCHOOL
We require the assistance of parents to supervise the School Road Patrol on BEFORE School. Our Road Patrol pupils
are fully trained and parents are there in a supervisory role. Prestons Road is a very busy road and it is most
important that we make our school crossing as safe as possible for children. The morning patrol operates from 8.35
to 9am and the afternoon patrol operates from 3.00pm to 3.15pm. Parents meet the pupils in the hall, 5 minutes

GOOGLE COMMUNITY GROUP – Marshland Minecrafters:
I have setup a Google Community group for parents and Marshlands school children to join called 'Marshlands Minecrafters' to give an online
social group where the children can get together to discuss Minecraft, give advice to others playing or learning to play Minecraft (both
Creative and Survival modes), and plan on meeting up on the various Minecraft servers to play together with other children they know, rather
than with total strangers online.
It is a way to encourage a sense of community and team cooperative playing with other children from the same school (and including friends
and siblings that might attend other Christchurch area schools who are interested in joining this online club). If your child would like to play
Minecraft and you would like to make sure there is a supportive group with fellow peers and parents from the school, please join on line by
search for 'Marshlands Minecrafters' in Google+, email me at [email protected] or txt/call me at 0211 480 795. Your children can ask
Tamzin Wallis Martin from Tui 3 about joining or finding out more information.
HEAD LICE
This on-going problem is with us once again. We have head lice cases in all classrooms, so it would be appreciated if
all parents could please take immediate action to avoid any further spreading of head lice.
There is a simple and effective way to break the head lice cycle – if every family could take part in this, we should be
head lice-free.
Check your child’s hair EVERY night. Every family member should be checked every week, that way any lice can be
found before they have a chance to breed. They can then be treated to stop them spreading to other family members
 Hair brushing – hair should be brushed twice a day on a regular basis
 Wet-comb your child’s hair thoroughly EVERY night, whether or not you see any signs of a problem – this should remove any
stray lice that have hopped onto the head that day, before they get too comfortable and established.







If your child has long hair, tie it well back or put it up to keep it away from other children’s heads. Pony tails and bunches can still dangle onto
other heads, so braiding or putting the hair up in a bun or similar is much more effective. The way head lice spreads is by direct contact from one
head to another, so keeping the hair well out of the way will help avoid this.
Combing - This should be done at least weekly. If a living, moving louse is found on one of the family’s head, the others in the family should be
checked carefully and any others who have lice should be treated at the same time.
Tie up long hair.
Do not share towels, combs, brushes, hats, helmets or other hair accessories.
Special shampoos, head lice combs and other products are available from your pharmacy.
One of our parents has had great success getting rid of head lice by using hair straighteners. Used every day for one week, this seems to kill all
the eggs.

ASB SCHOOL BANKING
At ASB, we recognize a growing need to educate New Zealand children on the importance of financial literacy and to
encourage good savings habits at a young age.
At Marshland school we offer the ASB Children’s Banking Programme. This allows children to save and bank their savings at
school each week.
Should you wish to register your child with this programme please collect a brochure from the school office.
If your child has an existing ASB account please complete section 1 of the application form and return it to your school office.
For a new ASB account please complete the application form in full (2 pages) and return to the school office.
Once an ASB account is established your child will receive an exciting ASB banking pack. When your child has money to bank they put their envelope
into the school banking box which is located in the school office. Attached to these envelopes is a receipt that you keep at home.
Marshland School’s banking day is every Friday.

We have Before and After School programmes. The Before School programme offers Supervision from 7:30am – 8:30am every weekday during

to keep coming back.
You can book as few or as many days as you wish your child to attend and we also offer casual bookings so your child or children can attend only
when you need them to.

HOLIDAY PROGRAMME AT THE COURT THEATRE:
Hansel and Gretel - In the Attic. 7 -10 April. Ages: 7 - 12
Building on the concept behind our Easter Kids show Alice in
Wonderland in the Attic children will get a chance to devise a way
to re tell the traditional tale of Hansel and Gretel using the things
you might find in an attic to help them. This will be a fun and
creative process encouraging and developing creative thinking,
performance skills, confidence and team work. This holiday
programme will include a chance to go and see Alice in
Wonderland in the Attic and meet the actors and the writer to
find out more about what goes into making a professional
performance. This programme is suitable for creative and
imaginative children, no specific level of reading or writing is
required and will include a performance to family and friends at
The Court Theatre on the final day of the programme.
