From the Vicar's Desk...... Dearly beloved in Christ, The observance of lent followed by the remembrance of passion, death and resurrection of Christ are important events of the Church which make all of us go through different religious experiences. These are the days of transformation both individually and collectively. The temptations of Jesus Christ mentioned in Mt. 4: 1-11 remind us that before public ministry, Jesus had to explicitly affirm his ability to say 'no' to many things. Being part of the society and as active members of public life we are also challenged to say no to many things which tempt us to get away from our life goals. Acquiring inner strength to say 'no' is expected from the observance of lent which even prepared Jesus for the cross. Negation sometimes brings hazards in our life but with a hope in Christ we need to move on and that is the basis of resurrection. May God enable us all to have a meaningful life with a hope in resurrection. May 1st is workers day, a day for remembering the need to affirm basic rights to all. The freedom to experience liberty, fraternity and equality becomes a right and we all are required to experience the same and extend the same to others. The day of Pentecost falls on 24 May highlighting the importance of having community living experiences with the help of Holy Spirit which enables us to transcend the barriers of divisions. June 14 is ecological Sunday which brings the message of leading an eco-friendly life for the wellbeing of generations. It highlights the need to develop a spirituality that will challenge us to take care of the entire creation of God. Identity affirmation with the help of religious affiliation is a serious matter of today. Communal clashes and ethnic rivalries are creating tensions between different communities all over the world. Innocent blood is shed in the name of religion. Christianity has always been a persecuted community and the same is continuing now in different parts of the world. The main early centers of Antiochian Christians are being attacked or demolished. Bishops, priests and faithful members are the victims of these attacks. It is in fact frustrating. Is there any alternative reply for such cruel acts of fundamentalists? I consider this as an opportunity to exhibit Christian witness to the world. Christianity has been carrying the guilty Parish News Letter : April - June - 2015 Page 1 consciousness of its colonial allegiance for long. We knowingly or unknowingly expect the support of state for all our endeavours. The time has come for Christians to live a subaltern life without the support of State. Inability, vulnerability and weakness are becoming mark of Christian life now. By expressing solidarity with the weak and the vulnerable let us find strength in God and that can be a positive aspect of persecution. The office bearers and the executive committee for the year 2015-16 have been elected. I congratulate them and encourage them to work for both the spiritual and physical wellbeing of this parish. I also express my heartfelt gratitude to all the office bearers and the executive committee members who worked with me for the last three years. Words cannot explain how I have enjoyed your co-operation and fellowship! May your goodness be rewarded. All the office bearers and committee members of different organizations of our Church deserve my appreciation. Your support made many things possible. As you all know I have been transferred to Noida Immanuel Mar Thoma Church from May 2015. We as a family are grateful to you all for making our ministry and stay in Gurgaon a memorable one. Life has got its ups and downs and I thank you for your love and support at all times. May we learn from our experiences so that we can all live meaningfully by loving and helping those around us. Let us realise Gods purpose in our lives and live accordingly so that we can be a blessing to generations. Rev Saji Thomas who is at present serving in Sehion Mar Thoma Church, Dallas, US, is replacing me. I pray that Achen's service and stay along with Tilu Kochemma and two sons Joel and Philip will be a blessing for all. I urge you to extend your whole hearted support to achen and family. “Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice, set things right, be encouraged, agree with one another, live in peace, and the God of love and peace will be with you.” 2 Corinthians 13:11 May God bless us all. The controversy was initiated by Mohan Madhukar Bhagawat, the Sarsanghchalak of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. This made me to read about mother again. Mother Teresa (original name was Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu), born on August 27, 1910 in Skopje,Macedonia, was the youngest of the children born to Nikola(a successful merchant) and Drane Bojaxhiu. Gonxha's religious formation was further assisted by the vibrant Jesuit parish of the Sacred Heart in which she was much involved. At the age of 12, she decided to be a missionary and spread the love of Christ; at 18 years she left her parental home in Skopje and joined the Sisters of Loreto, an Irish community of nuns with missions in India-where she was called “Sister Mary Teresa” after St. Thérèse of Lisieux. After two years of her arrival to India, she took her initial vows as a nun on May 24, 1931. From 1931 to 1948, she taught (Geography and Catechism) at St. Mary's High School in Calcutta. On 24 May 1937, she had her Final Profession of Vows to committing to “The Lord”. From that time on she was called Mother Teresa. Prayerful and lovable towards her fellow sisters and students, Mother Teresa's twenty years in Loreto were filled with profound happiness. Noted for her charity, unselfishness and courage, her capacity for hard work and natural talent for organization, she lived out her consecration to “The Lord”, in the midst of her companions, with fidelity and joy. Let us recall few line she said about herself; “By blood, I am Albanian. By citizenship, an Indian. By faith, I am a Catholic nun. As to my calling, I belong to the world. As to my heart, I belong entirely to the Heart of Jesus.” “God still loves the world and He sends you and me to be His love and His compassion to the poor.” She was a soul filled with the light of Christ, on fire with love for Him and burning with one desire: “to quench His thirst for love and for souls.” On March 13, 1997 Mother Teresa stepped down as the head of Missionaries of Charity. Mother Teresa's earthly life came to an end on 5th September'97. Responding to the recent criticisms against Mother Teresa Sunita Kumar, who worked very close to mother for three decades says; “Mother as a person or the Missionaries of Charity as an organization never distinguished on the basis of religion,” She continues saying, “Mother had once told us when you get criticized know that you are walking the right path, and she prayed for him,” I would like to end my random thoughts with one of her quotes; “If you judge people, you have no time to love them.” Parish News Letter : April - June - 2015 Page 11 Once when a Lion was asleep, a little Mouse began running up and down upon him. This soon wakened the Lion, who placed his huge paw upon him and opened his big jaws to swallow him. "Pardon, O King!" cried the little Mouse, "Forgive me this time. I shall never repeat it and I shall never forget your kindness. And who knows, but I may be able to do you a good turn one of these days?" The Lion was so tickled at the idea of the Mouse being able to help him, that he lifted up his paw and let him go. Sometime later a few hunters captured the King and tied him to a tree while they went in search of a wagon to carry him on. Just then the little Mouse happened to pass by, and seeing the sad plight in which the Lion was, ran up to him and soon gnawed away the ropes that bound the King of the Beasts. "Was I not right?" said the little Mouse, very happy to help the Lion. MORAL: Little friends may prove great friends. Parish News Letter : April - June - 2015 Page 12 The following are the essays which won first prize in the Sunday school competition held for Intermediate, Senior and Young adult classes. TOPIC - VALUES TO BE UPHELD BY A TRUE CHRISTIAN By Angelene Susan Thomas (Intermediate) What do you mean by a true Christian? What are the qualities a true Christian should have? Are there any specific ones? Yes, a true Christian must follow some rules and regulations. There are some values which should be adopted by every Christian. Some of them are, that a true Christian must have faith in God and must rely on him when they are in trouble or else they will have to face many trials in life. A Christian should have the discipline of life and should have the courage to accept God as their saviour almighty. A Christian must have compassion. We can take the example of Mother Teresa who was inspired by the gospel and came to India to treat leprosy patients and help the poor and needy. A true Christian must also love and care for others just like Ruth, a life redeemer who gave back Naomi her son. A Christian must have a forgiving nature because God also forgives our sins. We can take the example of the prodigal son who realized his mistake and returned to his father's house to ask for mercy and pardon, and his father forgave him. A true Christian must be just always. We can take the example of Zaccheus who once had a lot of money but after he saw Jesus he gave all his money to the people he had cheated. A true Christian should always be obedient to God and ready to take up the cross and follow Jesus. A Christian must be faithful like Paul who overcame all his trials with faith in God. A true Christian must have a strong bond with Christ. We have to trust in God. A true Christian must pray regularly. But prayer doesn't mean putting a list of requests in front of God. God knows our every desire because it is he who puts those desires in us. A true Christian must be regular in attending church services and taking part in the Holy Communion. A Christian must always stand up for their rights and the rights of others. Hence, I feel that we as Christians should improve ourselves with these values. TOPIC - CHRISTIAN FAMILY : YEAST IN THE WORLD By Arpita Rachel Abraham (Senior) A candle is meaningless without a flame, an apple is meaningless without a core, chocolate is incomplete without a taste, perfume is useless without an odour and bread is incomplete without yeast. In the same way the world is meaningless without Christian families. Parish News Letter : April - June - 2015 Page 13 But why are Christians considered so essential for the world? What makes them different from everyone else? Is it our looks, our deeds, our commitment? Well, according to me it is our values and fear of God. Christians are expected to live a life pleasing to God. Christian families should be praying regularly, reading the bible and keeping good values. They should be an example to their neighbours, their country and the whole world. They should sow the seeds of kindness, compassion, faith, love, etc. In reality are we really having all the above characteristics as Christians or are we just Christians for name's sake? If we are namesake Christians, I would suggest that we start working on improving these qualities because god created us to establish the kingdom of God on earth. God expects us to be yeast in the world. Out of all things in the world why should we be like yeast? Well it's because of the properties of yeast. Yeast is a unicellular organism which multiplies through budding. In the same way we need to spread the love of God, thus multiply it. We need to share the word of God and the values that Jesus has taught us with everyone. Though we are small in number we have to make a big difference. A little yeast makes the food fluffy and soft. In the same way, we as Christians need to get rid of tough hard evils and bring goodness and softness into the world. We need to act as carriers of love in the world. Yeast makes the food taste great. In the same way Christians need to make the world a better place by our presence. A place where one can live happily without hatred. So may our families become like yeast. Let us take pledge to follow the path of God to make our earth a better and wonderful place to live in. TOPIC - CHRISTIAN RESPONSE TO MODERN TRENDS By Dhanya Mary Biju (Young adult) Today's world has many modern trends. These trends vary from place to place. We can observe some of these trends in a person through their dressing style, talking style and other behaviours. We can see people following different trends in different places. Some of these trends can be dangerous. It is very important to know the Christian response to these trends. The Christian response should be formed very carefully. There are many Christians who accept these trends along with the society. They try to be like others by following these trends and fashions. Many Christians do not analyse these trends and see whether they are compromising with their values. True Christians however do not give up their faith for the sake of new fashions and trends. They try to maintain their own trends which are based on their faith in God. What I am trying to say is that we should always try to be our own self and should not go after modern trends which take us away from God. Let us be true Christians who are not attracted by modern trends but have strong values.
