Dear Mary Star of the Sea Parishioners:
I am wishing you all a Blessed Easter Season. Our Lord rose from
the dead to save us and to conquer sin and death. Living in a
World where Human life in all it’s stages seems to threatened and
even cheap, we are reminded that Jesus lived, died, and rose for
each and every soul He has created. All human life is Sacred and
must be cherished. As we continue this hope-filled season let us
continue to defend and pray for the Sanctity and protection of all
Life created in the Image and Likeness of Almighty God. Below is
a beautiful story of Hope that I came accross recently.

Man in vegetative state for 12 years wakes up to tell
remarkable story

When Martin Pistorius was 12-years-old, he came down with a
strange illness that caused him to lose his ability to walk, talk and
make eye contact, NPR.org reported.
Pistorius, of Harlow, England, appeared to be in a coma-like state,
and doctors scratched their heads over his condition. Their best
bet: crypotococcal meningitis. They told Rodney and Joan
Pistorius, his parents, who were living in South Africa at the time,
to take their son home because his time left was limited.
But, his mother said, “Martin just kept going, just kept going.”
Indeed, Pistorius kept going— insofar as his mind stayed active—
for 12 years. Although his parents thought he’d been akin to a
vegetable physically and mentally, Pistorius, now 39, says he
regained consciousness about two years after the condition
assaulted his body.
"Eight hours later, I'd pick him up, bathe him, feed him, put him in
bed, set my alarm for two hours so that I'd wake up to turn him so
that he didn't get bedsores," Rodney told NPR.
During those days, Martin Pistorius learned to numb his mind. His
thoughts were his only companion, and they weren’t kind to him.
“No one will ever show me tenderness,” he thought. “No one will
ever love me.”
Disengaging from his mind involved thinking of absolutely
nothing, he told NPR. "You simply exist. It's a very dark place to
find yourself because, in a sense, you are allowing yourself to
vanish."
But he couldn’t banish all of his thoughts. The popular TV show
“Barney,” for example, aired on loop in the special care center
where Pistorius’ father left him. "I cannot even express to you how
much I hated Barney," Martin told NPR.
Moving in and out of different care centers, Pistorius says that he
was subjected to various types of abuse, from verbal to physical to
even sexual from caretakers who were under the impression he was
unconscious and unaware of his surroundings.
Pistorius later learned to reframe thoughts regarding statements
like his mother’s. He realized that when she looked at him, she saw
a cruel parody of the once-healthy child he had been.
"For her, it was like her son died when he was 12," Pistorius told
Fox News.
Pistorius talked to Fox News about these years where he lived
trapped in his own body. He developed several coping mechanisms
to pass the time like watching the sun's shadows move across a
room or watching two insects and imagine them racing. Martin
lived in his imagination and would have conversations with
himself and the people in his head.
In sum, he still couldn’t speak or move, but he could think, he told
NPR.
He credits one of his caretakers, Virna van der Walt, for changing
his life when she began to notice signs of comprehension when

Savoring the Experience
One of the wonderful things about vacations is the time we
spend two or three weeks afterward savoring the experience,
sharing vacation photos and memories with our family and
friends. This kind of reflection puts us back in touch with the
original experience and reminds us of the relaxation and wonder
the vacation afforded us. Today, on the Third Sunday of Easter,
the Church blesses us with reminders of what we celebrated two
Sundays ago. All three readings are reflections on the meaning
of the death and resurrection of Christ. One of the threads
running through these reflections is that the purpose of the
Lord’s suffering, death, and resurrection was to save us, to
forgive our sins. We are given fifty days to ponder this reality—
fifty days to savor the experience of Christ’s dying and rising for
us.

Madonna Dell’Arco Feast Day
On TODAY at the 6:30 P.M. Italian
Mass, there will be a celebration of
the feast of the Madonna dell’Arco.
The Italian community has been long
devoted to the Madonna dell’Arco.
The name of the Madonna dell’Arco
originates from an area where there
were many aqueduct with arches
(arco) and columns built during the
Roman Empire. On one of these columns a devoted artist painted
the image of the Blessed Virgin and Child. Many centuries later,
youths were playing bocce ball near the shrine. After a clumsy
throw, the ball of one of the players hit a tree that shaded the
sacred shrine. The youth, blinded by anger, retrieved the ball and
threw it against the image of Our Lady, hitting her the right
cheek. To the shock of all those present, the cheek was seen to
bleed, as if it were of real flesh. The original image is in the
Sanctuary in Naples, Italy. Many miracles were recorded since
then and in March 1675 for about a month, the image of Our
Lady was seen surrounded by stars, while the right cheek
appeared red with blood. A picture of the image of the Madonna
dell’Arco was dedicated on January 27, 2013 at Mary Star by the
Italian Catholic Federation and was placed in the Shrine of Saint
John Joseph of the Cross. Please join us to celebrate the Feast
Day of Our Lady of the Arch. Bring flowers from your garden to
place them at the image.

God’s Word Today
The Easter season is a time of mystagogy. Mystagogy is an
ancient word that simply means “unfolding the mysteries.”
During the Easter season, the Church unfolds the mysteries of
Christ’s passion, death, and resurrection so that the newly
baptized, along with the entire community of believers, can grasp
more fully the meaning of the paschal mystery. Today’s
scriptures offer a lesson in mystagogy for us all. Jesus’ place in
salvation history is recounted by Saint Peter in the first reading
and interpreted by Jesus himself in the Gospel passage. Like
students who sit at the feet of their master, let us gather around
the table of God’s word, asking God to open our hearts and minds
to a renewed sense of the meaning of the paschal mystery in our
lives.
