What: Easter Message
Easter Greetings to everyone! We continue our
spiritual journey and ministry during the Easter
Season mindful of the blessings the Risen Christ
brings to us- renewed faith, hope and joy. The spirit
of joy emanates from the compassion and mercy of
God made manifest in Christ's suffering, death and
resurrection. Pope Francis puts emphasis on this by
declaring a Jubilee Year of Mercy so that the
Church may offer more evident signs of God's
presence and closeness and to rediscover the
meaning of the mission entrusted to her by the Lord
on the day of Easter: to be a sign and an instrument of
the Father's mercy.
The Motto is: "Merciful as the Father." with a strong
call fur works of corporal and spiritual mercy in
order to reawaken our conscience that has grown
indifferent to the poverty around and to enter more
deeply into the heart of the Gospel where the poor
have a special experience of God's mercy. Our
Holy Father encourages us to open our hearts to
God who never tires of extending mercy and ever
patient in offering compassion, pardon and comfort
to everyone and share his love with us. He wishes
that the Jubilee of Mercy may help us carry out in
our daily lives the mercy which the Father
constantly extends to all of us.
Finally, we continue to celebrate the Year of
Consecrated Life as declared by Pope Francis in
order to honor the women and men who fulfill their
baptismal vocation by formally consecrating their
lives to service, prayer and care for others. Our
brothers and sisters living consecrated lives make
great contributions to our society through a vast
number of ministries: teach in our schools; take care
of the poor and the sick; bring compassion and the
love of Christ to those ignored by society; others
lead lives of prayer in contemplation for the world.
This is a great time to thank them for their faithful
service to God and to the Church as well as to
emphasize the importance of the religious vocation.
So please take note of the coming celebrations in
our pastoral region in their honor.
Pope Francis issued the Papal Bull "Misericordiae
Vultus" convoking the Extraordinary Jubilee of
Mercy which coincides with the 50th anniversary
of the closing of the Vatican H Ecumenical
Council. The Year of Divine Mercy begins on
December 8'\ the Feast of the Immaculate
Conception and concludes on the Solemnity of
Christ the King on 20 November 2016. The Holy
Blessings to all!”
Father envisions tl1ias a year of blessing where we
can experience the warmth of God's love m:d tender
mercy. Transformed by His mercy, we are called to
be witnesses of God's grace, instruments of His
mercy to bring healing, forgiveness and reconciliation
to everyone.
A special feature of this Jubilee Year is that it will
be celebrated not only in Rome but also in all the
other dioceses of the world. Pope Francis continues
the teaching of St. John XXUI, who spoke of the
"medicine of Mercy", and of Paul VI who identified
the spirituality of Vatican U with that of the
Samaritan.

First Reading — There is no salvation through anyone
else (Acts 4:8-12).
Psalm — The stone rejected by the builders has become
the cornerstone (Psalm 118).
Second Reading — See what love the Father has
bestowed on us that we may be called the children of God
(1 John 3:1-2).
Gospel — The good shepherd lays down his life for the
sheep (John 10:11-18).
Treasures from Tradition
Many of our customs surrounding
critical illness come from antiquity, and
yet attitudes have certainly changed.
Death was an all too-familiar presence
then, and people tended to see it as a
natural and unavoidable part of life, not
a personal catastrophe. People tried to review their lives,
settle their affairs, say farewell to their dear ones, and
welcome the deathbed vigils and prayers that assured them
of God’s love and forgiveness. What people most feared
was sudden death. It was dreaded and never discussed.
The faithful filled the catacombs with consoling
images of the good shepherd carrying the sheep to safe
pasture, or the faithful in glory seated at banquet tables.
The prayer texts from the time are consoling and positive,
and many inspired our modern prayers. The care of the
dying flowed directly from Roman pagan practice; it was
home based and family centered. Pagans didn’t
especially fear death, but they were terrified by the dead.
Christians, on the other hand, consoled their sick with
psalms of joy and faith in the Resurrection. The goal was
to assure the sick person of God’s love, and that the ties
that bind the dead and the living would endure.

The only time our Lord asked the Apostles for
anything was the night He went into agony. Not for
activity did He plead but for an Hour of
companionship. Every Wednesday there is a Holy
Hour in the church from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
Within the hour there is a rosary with beautiful
reflections, the chaplet of Divine Mercy, and time
for silent adoration and Benediction. Please come and spend one

The Good Shepherd
This Fourth Sunday of Easter is traditionally referred to as
“Good Shepherd Sunday.” Today we listen to the words of the
Lord as he refers to himself as the “good shepherd who lays
down his life for the sheep.” It is sometimes so difficult for us
to grasp the reality that anyone would lay down his or her own
life for the sake of someone else. This is especially true in a
society that places high value on power and personal
advancement, often at the cost of “trampling” on other people
in order to climb the ladder. Today’s scriptures point to the
one we are called to emulate—the one who lays down his life
for his sheep. Today’s scriptures challenge us to discover
ways to bring life to those around us—to build up rather than
to tear down.

MSHS News:
Spring Blood Drive - Donate in the name of Chris Joya:
Sophomore Chris Joya has been battling brain cancer since the
school year began. To honor his family and his fight with cancer,
we are asking our Mary Star community to donate blood in his
name. The spring blood drive is scheduled for Tuesday, April
28th in the gym between 8:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Parishioners and
parents can sign-up through the main office by calling 310-5471138. Students can sign-up in Homeroom or with a Junior Class
Officer. Students who are 16 years old must have a parent
signature to donate. Students 17 or older may donate without
parental consent. Also, if we match the 50 pints of blood our Fall
Blood Drive collected, the high school will earn a $500
scholarship for a graduating senior.
Congratulations to Principal Rita Dever! Ms. Dever was
recognized by Assembly member Patrick O’Donnell (D-Long
Beach) as one of his 2015 70th District Women of Distinction.
The assembly member selected women who “go above and
beyond for their community.” Women from across the 70th
District were nominated by colleagues in five categories: Arts,
Business, Community Service, Education and Health Services.
Thank you, Ms. Dever for all you do for our school!
The effort to support our largest fundraiser of the year is in the
final stretch! A Night of a Thousand Stars takes place on
Saturday, May 2nd and raises money to benefit our academic,
athletic and tuition assistance programs. Please contact the main

 PURCHASE GALA TICKETS! Ticket prices are $175
per person for dinner, dancing and access to silent and live
auctions.
 PURCHASE OPPORTUNITY TICKETS! Ticket prices
are: $10 each / 3 for $20 / 10 for $50. Each student is
required to purchase or sell at least one sheet of tickets
(10 tickets). Parents will be billed for any unsold tickets at
the end of the school year so please sell your Opportunity
Tickets!
Donations to Mary Star of the Sea High School can be made also
through Memorial Pledges in lieu of flowers. Pay tribute to
someone special and their living faith in God with a donation to
Mary Star of the Sea High School. Donations can be made online

entrances of the Church.
The Dollar-a-Day "Phone-A-Thon"is back! Please support this
important endeavor to raise funds for the school. We heartily
thank those who have participated in the past and hope more will
join us this year. Students will meet each Wednesday night at
6:30 p.m. in the faculty room to make phone calls asking
potential donors to contribute to our "Dollar-A-Day"

Congratulations to our 2nd Grade Class who
received their First Holy Communion
yesterday. They have been preparing for 2
years to receive the Holy Eucharist and the
excitement and anticipation at school this
week was tangible! This marks an
important step in their faith journey; thank you for your

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
The Kindergarten Class is celebrating Earth Day all week
with stories, art, reading and writing assignments.
The 8th grade class has been practicing converting
Standard American Measurement into metric units.
1st grade is completing a unit on Poetry and Prose. This
week they practiced writing poems of their own in a
variety of formats.
4th grade is converting fractions to decimals and relating it
to using money in the world outside of the classroom.
7th grade has been working on the skills needed to write a
strong persuasive argument in an opinion paper.
