Hughes’ own childhood memories prompted him to write heartfelt novels for young adults because as a result of his own experiences, he believes he can tap into the thoughts that go through a teenager's mind, as well as the concerns and hopes that fill their days. Hughes will sometimes address his fans on video and occasionally he’ll appear on video and in song to answer a fan’s letter in a tune he sings and plays on his ukulele. His novels for teens and ‘tweens include: Lemonade Mouth Puckers Up, I Am the Wallpaper, A Crack In The Sky and Lemonade Mouth, now a Disney Channel Original Movie musical. The book Lemonade Mouth, originally written for teens, has been slightly adapted by the author for middle grade readers.
