PAGE 6 By Dr. Natasha Vladimirsky, Oak Street Health One of our common human pitfalls is the way we put off dealing with important items. It doesn’t matter what age you are or how effective you are with time. There are some tasks, obligations, or even problems that you intentionally don’t solve. Why is that? No, you are not lazy or tired; you just don’t want to face the work you have to put in to deal with some issues. Courage is a strong trait that you have developed over time and is reachable at any moment. This spring, use your courage to stand up against your own procrastination. Don’t look at your problems and wait for someone to solve them for you. Stand up for yourself and solve them. Yes, you can do it! Look within yourself and take action. While we all become older, we still have the potential to expand our physical, mental, and social growth. Answers don’t fall from the sky—they come from actions that you take to have a better future! Dr. Natasha Vladimirsky can be found at Oak Street Health at 1541 W. Devon Avenue in Edgewater, and can be reached at (773) 250.5222. She is bilingual in Russian. If you’re a regular attendee at Mather Edgewater Luncheons, chances are, if you haven’t met him, you’ve at least noticed him. “I like to talk,” admits Tim. “I enjoy the camaraderie at the monthly luncheons.” Because he lives practically across the street, he knows many neighbors who attend, but he has also made a lot of new friends over the years. “I have macular degeneration. I enjoy sitting with people at the Heart-to-Heart table; many are vision impaired. I hadn’t met any of them before, and they’re great people!” Tim who’s 86, moved to the Edgewater neighborhood from Wheaton about 24 years ago. “I’d never lived in an apartment building before,” he says, “but it felt like home almost immediately.” He adds, “Residents in this building probably speak about 50 different languages. I’ve learned to say ‘Hello’ in almost every one of them.” “I think it was someone in our building who first told me about the Luncheons,” he recalls. That was nearly 10 years ago, and he’s been attending regularly ever since. Luckily, his macular degeneration doesn’t impair Tim’s ability to drive— because he puts that ability (and his car) to good use. He regularly takes a carload of neighbors to mass at St. Ita’s, and is a volunteer chauffeur for older adults going to Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly events. He also delivers clothing donations to the Cara Program, a nonprofit organization that helps the homeless. The next time you see Tim at a Mather Edgewater Luncheon, introduce yourself. No matter what language you speak, he’s sure to say hello! Join the Conversation Dial up live, interactive presentations—FREE!
