Woods Miller graduated from Eastern Illinois University in 2002 with a
Bachelor's degree in Music and earned his Master of Music Education
from the University of Illinois in 2009. He is in his 11th year as a public
school music educator. Prior to coming to the Mat-Su and teaching at
Tanaina Elementary School, he was a music teacher in Edwards County,
Illinois where he taught pre-school through 5th grade music, beginning
& middle school band and middle school choir at Albion and West Salem Grade Schools. Also while in Illinois he founded and conducted the
Edwards County Community Band.
Woods Miller enlisted in the Illinois Air National Guard in 2000. Nine

Chris Loescher was born and raised in Chugiak, Alaska. After graduating
from Chugiak High School in 2002, he attended UAA earning his Bachelors in Music Education and Masters in Arts and Teaching. Upon completion of his MAT degree in 2008, he was hired in the Mat-Su Valley at
Tanaina Elementary, and the following year moved to and opened Machetanz Elementary. This year will complete his seventh year as a public
music educator. In addition to working at Machetanz, Mr. Loescher is
active in the local music community by adjudicating for various festivals,
teaching privately as a brass instructor and by playing in ensembles and
venues around the Anchorage and Mat-Su Valley areas. He also guest
conducted the 2011-2012 Mat-Su Valley Middle School Honor Band, as
well as last years Elementary Honor Band.
Kelly Rentz has been the Music Specialist at Finger Lake Elementary
School for the past five years. She has been an educator for the past 25
years and has taught Pre-school, Middle School Choir, and High School
Choir. Her heart, however, is in the Elementary Music classroom, and she
enjoys teaching beginning band, chorus, and Orff Ensemble, as well as
General Music in grades K-5. She feels very fortunate to work with such a
talented group of students and music educators! In her spare time, Mrs.
Rentz plays French Horn in the Mat-Su Community Orchestra, attends as
many plays and musicals as possible, and acts as taxi driver for her daughters, Charly and Jessica. She lives in Palmer with her husband of 20 years,
Kyle.
Cyndi Carté, originally from sunny California, now resides in Palmer,
Alaska with her husband and daughter. Mrs. Carté is honored to share
directing the Mat-Su Honor Choir this year. An accomplished singer,
Mrs. Carté has sung with many performing groups in Fairbanks, Alaska
while attending the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF), Anchorage and
the Valley. It was at UAF that Cyndi earned her degree in K-12 Music
Education. Mrs. Carté loves working with elementary school students.
Their energy, joy of learning and creating make every day a fun-filled adventure. She has been teaching music in the Anchorage and Mat-Su
School districts for the past 20 years.
When not teaching, Mrs. Carté loves watching her daughter play trombone and tuba at Teeland Middle School, and sousaphone with the Colony High School, "Thee Northern Sound" marching band. She also enjoys
spending time in the great Alaskan outdoors with her family. She is looking forward to many more years working with the talented students of the
Mat Su School District.

Kai West is thrilled to be invited to conduct the first elementary string orchestra at the Honors Festival this year. She has been teaching in Alaska for
over 20 years and loves her current job as music specialist at John Shaw
Elementary School. Whether she is teaching her general music classes,
grade level programs, band, orchestra or guitar, strings are her thing. She
was trained as a cellist and is so thankful that the district and her staff and
administration at Shaw support the implementation of strings into the music
program. She counts it a blessing to be able to have her children grow up
through the Mat-Su education system where the Arts are still considered an
essential part of a child's instruction. Mrs. West is also the conductor of the
Mat-Su Youth Orchestra which has middle and high school students from
many schools in the valley coming together and learning and creating great
music. This is a community group that seeks to build musicianship and
provide opportunities for performance for all intermediate level string students. Kai is also involved in the Valley Performing Arts theater productions. She hopes you enjoy the debut of the Honor Orchestra and is very
proud of the hard work these students have put into learning their instruments.
Jessie Eddings is a second-year teacher in the Mat-Su District. She was born
and raised in the state, where she participated in many local music ensembles including the Alaska Children's Choir and the Anchorage Youth Symphony. She then went on to obtain her Bachelor of Music Education degree in 2010 from Wartburg College in Waverly, IA, and her Master of
Music degree in 2012 from Mercer University in Macon, GA. She has had
the opportunity to travel extensively with various performing groups and
continues to be involved in the local arts. Currently, she teaches string orchestra at Birchtree Charter School, maintains a private studio for string,
piano, and voice students, and participates in the Mat-Valley String Orchestra. Jessie currently resides in Palmer, AK with her husband, Ryan.
Wendy Bowen has taught in the Mat-Su School District for the past 25
years. She enjoys guiding students as they develop and shine in musical
performance. Teaching music and Spanish are two of her passions. Mrs.
Bowen is fortunate to have a supportive husband, five sons, four daughterin-laws and 12 grandchildren, with another on the way. She is honored to
be participating in the Mat-Su District's Music Program and directing a
piece for this year's Honor Choir.
