SPIRITUAL DIRECTION PROGRAM: Spiritual Direction is a process in which a mentor accompanies
one person - the directee - for an extended period of time. Through conversation, prayer, and spiritual
exercises, the mentor helps the directee clarify spiritual issues so that s/he can move toward a deeper
experience with the Divine. If you are interested in receiving spiritual direction, contact Rev. Edgard
Francisco at [email protected] or call ext. 223.

THE LESSON
La Lección Primera
The First Lesson
Génesis 37: 1-20
Genesis 37: 1-20
Jacob settled in the land where his parents had lived as aliens, the land of Canaan. This is the story of the family of Jacob. Joseph, being
seventeen years old, was shepherding the flock with his brothers; he was a helper to the children of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father’s spouses;
and Joseph brought a bad report of them to their father. Now Israel loved Joseph more than any other of his children, because he was the child
of his old age; and Israel had made Joseph a long robe with sleeves. But when Joseph’s siblings saw that their father loved Joseph more than
all his children, they hated Joseph, and could not speak peaceably to him. Once Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his siblings, they
hated him even more. Joseph said to them, “Listen to this dream that I had. There we were, binding sheaves in the field. Suddenly my sheaf
rose and stood upright; then your sheaves gathered around it, and bowed down to my sheaf.” Joseph’s siblings said to him, “Are you indeed to
reign over us? Are you indeed to have dominion over us?” So they hated Joseph even more because of his dreams and his words. Joseph had
another dream, and told it to his siblings, saying, “Look, I have had another dream: the sun, the moon, and eleven stars were bowing down to
me.” But when Joseph told it to his father and to his siblings, his father rebuked him, and said to Joseph, “What kind of dream is this that you
have had? Shall we indeed come, I and your mother and your siblings, and bow to the ground before you?” So Joseph’s siblings were jealous
of him, but his father kept the matter in mind. Now Joseph’s siblings went to pasture their father’s flock near Shechem. And Israel said to
Joseph, “Are not your siblings pasturing the flock at Shechem? Come, I will send you to them.” Joseph answered, “Here I am.” So Israel said
to Joseph, “Go now, see if it is well with your siblings and with the flock; and bring word back to me.” So Israel sent Joseph from the valley
of Hebron. Joseph came to Shechem, and a person found him wandering in the fields; the person asked Joseph, “What are you seeking?”
“I am seeking my siblings,” Joseph said; “tell me, please, where they are pasturing the flock.” The person said, “They have gone away, for I
heard them say, ‘Let us go to Dothan.’” So Joseph went after his siblings, and found them at Dothan. They saw Joseph from a distance, and
before he came near to them, they conspired to kill him. They said to one another, “Here comes the dreamer. Come now, let us kill him and
throw him into one of the pits; then we shall say that a wild animal has devoured him, and we shall see what will become of his dreams.”
