It indicated the week just prior to Holy Week. In observance of Passion Sunday every religious image throughout the church was covered with purple cloth and the effect was that in the church there was an absence of any cross, picture or statue. It was meant to remind us of the stark reality of living in a world without the presence of God; a world without a manifestation of redemption or hope. We no longer cover the statues and Passion Sunday and Palm Sunday have been somewhat combined as the beginning of Holy Week but the prior image is something that we do well to reflect upon. The impact of God’s presence in our life can become such a common reality that it lacks a sense of meaning and intensity. We take for granted that God is part of our day-to-day existence and that He is accessible to us through prayer and sacrament on a regular basis. Like most things that are so available we may take for granted the role He played and continues to play in our daily life. For the people of Israel who lived awaiting the Messiah there was no proximate sense of comfort. They lived with a spiritual longing in their hearts to be reconciled to God and to have a positive ongoing relationship. Jesus was the manifestation of that moment of reconciliation but he was not readily accepted and so they continued to live in exile from God and in expectation. The comfort and support that April 6, 2014 we have in our life through prayer and sacrament was not part of their life. As we approach Holy Week let us rekindle in our hearts the presence of God in our life and in our world; not a God who is distant and uninvolved but one who sent His Son to be our redeemer. May Holy Week bring abundant graces and blessings to us all Sincerely, Rev. Robert DeJulio Pastor OLPH Annual Card Party is Thursday, April 24th at 7:00 PM at Beckwith Pointe. This winter has taken its toll on the parish budget. We have spent over $16,000.00 in snow removal which is three times what we spent last year and $10,000.00 over budget. It would be very helpful if we could make up some of this expense. This weekend we will have a second collection for snow removal, please do whatever you can to help us defray the cost. 461-OLPH Fifth Sunday of Lent April 6, 2014 461-OLPH
