Tech Tips
by Justin Schwin
Computers: They’re fragile pieces of equipment that
rely on trillions of settings and configurations in order
to work properly. It doesn’t take long before incorrect
settings, wrong clicks, or doing things improperly build
up and result in the breaking of the proverbial camel’s
back. Any deviation from the exact way you’re supposed
to do things will result in catastrophe; along with it,
the loss of data, time, and plenty of money.
This is ultimately a self-defeating practice.
Everything in the above paragraph is the complete
opposite of the truth.
For those who don’t know what I mean, take a moment
to watch a child explore a new toy or game. Watch as
they, fearless of the consequences, grab, press, click, and
explore. They can put together the point and function
of something through the simplest form of learning in
the world: Trial and error.
In reality, computers came onto the scene as a total
reversal of the way people look at machines. Machines
of the pre-computer era were built to perform a single
task, computers perform any task you tell them. With
the proper hardware, software, and equipment they
can now pour you a cup of coffee, crack a joke,
and understand your pop culture references.
All because people dared to experiment!
Experimentation is exactly what you, the reader,
need to do if you aren’t already.
It is the biggest thing I come across in my Computer
Support – also affectionately called “Computer Whisperer”
or “Laptop Doctor” – program, simply users who have
issues doing things. Not necessarily fixing things, mind
you. My most common patrons are those who don’t
know how to do something. When I show them, they
write it down in exacting, step-by-step detail so they
don’t risk breaking anything.
Library
Ambassadors
Technology Services Assistant at MCDL
Your computer is not, under any
circumstances, a fragile thing. There are a handful of
different ways to do the same task with the hope that
at least one will feel intuitive and natural for everyone.
Experiment with it. Try things.
Allow yourself to learn like a child.
If you’ve ever asked yourself “Why can this seven year old
use this computer better than me?” then you need to
explore. Use it more, dare to see what something does,
and if you don’t know even after opening it? Find out.
Caution is valuable, to a point. It’s a natural instinct,
especially with the unknown, that serves us well. In the
context of using your computer, allow your caution to
take a back seat. The overwhelming majority of things
you’ll try will never cause a problem.
Instead, maybe you’ll learn something and in turn be
able to use your own computer – or your workstation
here – that much more easily.

A founding member of the MCDL Ambassadors
We as ambassadors are the public face for our treasured library. Think – envoy, advocate, messenger, representative:
with a mandate to provide support while gathering public feedback to improve MCDL service to the community.
We’ve hit the pavement running – members are implementing a little lending library program; in partnership with
Feeding Medina County we’ve set up library info tables during food distribution days. We attend various community
and library related events. In other words we promote the library, while listening to our communities and their
questions, concerns or criticisms.

Hear Regina Brett, the New York Times bestselling author, talk about
her new book God is Always Hiring: 50 Lessons for Finding Fulfilling
Work. It focuses on how we relate to our work, or lack of work, and
the seeking of something deeper and more meaningful in our career
and life. With essays like “Every job is as magical as you make it” and
“Only you can determine your worth,” this book relates tales of
discouragement turning into hope, and persistence paying off.
“The lessons reflect what I learned from life as a single parent for
18 years, struggling to find the right partner in life, battling breast
cancer and healing the bruises from a bumpy childhood. And they
reflect what I’ve learned from readers in my 27 years as a journalist.”
Regina has been writing professionally since 1986. Her column
appears regularly in The Plain Dealer and in the Cleveland Jewish News.
They focus on the issues of every day life. Sometimes touching, often funny and always
provocative, Regina’s columns touch people where they truly live. She was named a
Pulitzer Prize finalist twice, in 2009 and 2008 for columns she wrote for The Plain Dealer,
Ohio’s largest newspaper.
