Duquesne Branch Clerk




Part-time position
Reports to the Branch Manager
Works primarily at one branch, but could fill in at any location
Evenings and weekends routinely scheduled
REQUIREMENTS:
 High school diploma or GED
 Computer experience – proficient in a Windows environment, and with the Internet and Microsoft Office
software
 Organized, FLEXIBLE, and self-motivated
 Physically able to bend and reach top and bottom shelves, plus lift 20 pounds
 Able to work easily with staff and the public, most often as the sole staff person on duty
JOB DESCRIPTION:
 Be able to perform all clerk duties (see clerk description, but this includes using library software for checking
materials in and out, renewing and requesting materials, collecting and recording fines paid, issuing and
updating patrons’ library cards, marking items missing and/or damaged, complete paging lists; performing
offline circulation when needed; assisting patrons with materials, Catalog, Databases, computers, printing,
software installed on patron computers – Microsoft Office and Internet; conducting ready reference in-library
and over the phone; monitor computer use and patron behavior; track and log patron attendance and
payments; answering phones)
 Process incoming deliveries
 Route items to participating libraries
 Clear holdshelf regularly
 Re-shelve books and re-arrange when needed
 Notify Branch Manager or Processing when shelves need to be weeded and complete the weeding
 Check and attend to voice mail and email daily
 Troubleshoot any computer problems and contact Help Desk as soon as possible if unable to resolve them
 Keep library tidy and clean, including restrooms, if applicable. Keep pamphlets and signs up-to-date
 Report any maintenance issues to appropriate person, depending upon the situation. Normally this is at least
the Branch Manager, but contact any additional people that are necessary if the situation is urgent or an
emergency
 Order supplies with forms provided or by contacting Branch Manager when items get low (before running out),
including yellow hold slips and stickers
 Regularly reconcile the fine sheet, count the money and send the bank bag to McKeesport with another staff
member or in person
 Ensure outer door is locked at end of day and computers are powered down (except on software update days)
 Follow library policies and ask for clarifications when needed
 Attend continual training
 Assist at off-site events or locations as needed
 Perform any additional duties assigned by the Director
Duquesne:
 Ensure that DVDs and most office-type items are locked up in locked room at end of day. Also, key on umbrella
to outer door needs to be locked in the locker.
 Ensure that guard desk has copies of any signs about closings and that school has been notified of last-minute
changes.
