Congratulations to Classic Edition on a fantastic season in 2015! CE placed as Grand
Champions at the Great River Invitational in Davenport, Kennedy’s Raise The Roof, Jefferson’s
Show Choir Invitational, and Washington’s MoShow. MoShow also hosted a solo competition
for middle school this year, which the McKinley students dominated: Ian Wolverton-Weiss
(6th grade) won the competition and Alanna Adkins, Gracie Stark, and Emma Westphalen
(8th grade) were the 1st runners up.
Ian was also awarded Best Male Soloist at the Jefferson Invitational. In
addition to competing, Classic Edition
performed two home shows for friends
and family, an assembly for McKinley
staff and students, toured at Erskine,
Grant Wood, Johnson, and the ELSC
in February, and provided the finale
performance for this year’s Variety
Show. Way to go, CE!

As the weather begins
to warm up, the McKinley
Middle School administration would like to remind
both parents and students
about our dress code at
McKinley. These are posted in the building handbook
and your student’s planner, as well as the school
website.
For those 8th grade students and parents who
are getting ready for the end of the year dance and
award ceremonies, please remember that dress code
does apply to those events as well. Most importantly,
strapless and spaghetti strapped dresses should be
covered with a shawl or sweater while at school and
should be at an appropriate length. If you have any
questions regarding dress code, please contact the

CEDAR RAPIDS POLICE OFFICER SPEAKS TO STUDENTS
ABOUT CYBERBULLYING AND SEXTING
On February 18, Officer Shannon Stokesberry from the Cedar Rapids Police Department visited McKinley
and gave a presentation on Cyberbullying and Sexting. She started off talking about the positives and negatives of electronic communication. Some of the positives of electronic communication include the ability to
do research, homework assignments, and to communicate with friends and family that may not live close by. Some of the negatives of electronic communication include online predators, cyberbullies, exposure to inappropriate material, sharing too much information online leading to identity theft, and several more. Cyberbullying happens when the Internet, cell phones, or other devices are used to send or post text or
images intended to hurt or embarrass another person. Sexting is sending graphic images or videos via
any electronic device. Both can have very serious effects for a young person like anxiety, depression, low
esteem, and sometimes even suicide. Students were
taught to never post anything that they would not want
their parents, teachers, or future employers to see. Once a message is posted or sent, the sender loses
control of it in cyberspace and can NEVER totally delete it or take it back. If what is posted is inappropriate
or illegal, the sender could face legal consequences
and their chances of getting into a college or accepted
for a career position could be drastically reduced.
If a child feels they are the victim of cyberbullying or
sexting, they should talk to a trusted adult immediately. Here are a couple of other ways these incidents can be

Tips for parents: 1.Electronic devices should always be used in common areas of the home (kitchen, family room) but
NEVER in a child’s bedroom
2.Set rules and limitations for use of electronic devices and monitor your children’s activity online
3.Talk with your children—ask them who they are communicating with, what sites they are visiting, etc.
4.Make sure kids understand that they can always talk to you if they feel uncomfortable, scared,
vbullied, etc.
5.Be suspicious if your child starts receiving phone calls, mail, gifts from people you don’t know—that
may be a sign they’re talking to strangers online

GIRLS RULE AT ANNUAL EGG DROP
7th grade science students in Mrs. Olson’s and
Ms. Comer’s classes tested their engineering skills
to see who could build a device that could keep a
raw chicken egg intact when dropped from a height.
Students built their devices from limited amounts of
materials. After several drops, it came down to three
teams—all girls! The final test was a drop from the
roof of the school, and all eggs survived the drop.

LANGUAGE ARTS AND
LITERACY NEWS
Our students have had a busy second trimester.
They completed a unit on “The Human Spirit” reading
literature and viewing media telling stories of people
who have found the spirit within themselves to rise
above challenges in their lives. As an end-of-the-unit
project, students chose the person or character they
most admired and gave an oral presentation on that
person’s human spirit and how they have personally
been impacted by it. The next unit, “The Natural World”
focused on literature selections related to nature.
In addition, students participated in a formal
speech competition. Each student researched, organized, wrote, and delivered a speech about a famous
American landmark. Six seventh grade students, Lindsay Gordon, Natalia Hagen, Lewis Kleman, Jayden
Kitner, Paiton Pumroy, and Sidney Turner, advanced
to the school-level competition and delivered their
speeches to a small group of family and friends on
Friday, March 13. Eighth-grader, David Hebrink, came
in 1st place, with Lindsay and Sidney placing 2nd and
3rd, respectively, earning the opportunity to move on
to the city competition to be held in April.
The final project of the trimester was an argumentative paper. Students selected a controversial issue
to present in argumentative form. In Literacy, they
continue to read novels independently, completing
projects and taking Reading Counts tests, and some
classes have read The Giver as a common novel.
The third trimester will, without a doubt, be busy
as well as students work to sharpen their skills in
preparation for 8th grade.
MERCY DONATES
AN AED TO MCKINLEY
Mercy Medical Center donated an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) to McKinley Middle School
in January. The AED is a device that may save a life
in the event of a Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). SCA
is the nation’s leading killer, taking over 300,000 lives
annually.
Our AED is located on second floor across the
hall from the main office entrance. It is in an alarmed
cabinet with an AED sign above it.
An AED is an FDA approved medical device that,
if necessary, will deliver a shock to the heart. The
AED pads are placed on the victim’s chest in the
appropriate places as shown on the AED and pads
themselves.
If, after analyzing a victim’s heart rhythm, the AED
detects cardiac arrest, the AED will audibly advise that
a shock be delivered. The Shock button will then need
to be pressed. If you can use a cell phone, you can
use an AED! A shock cannot be delivered if the AED
does not detect cardiac arrest in the victim.
AEDs are proven to increase the chances of saving
the lives of cardiac arrest victims. Survival improves
from under 5% to over 60% by the use of an AED
within 2-4 minutes of collapse!

7TH GRADE GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM CITY CHAMPS
The 7th grade girls had a highly successful season this year. The A team stormed to a record of 8 wins
and no losses to capture the City Championship. During the season they defeated the Royals of Regis and
both Linn Mar squads as well as the rest of the city schools. The A team consisted of Anna Bosking, Tajia
Federick-Williams, Emily Kelly, Marek McBride, Jenna Pelechek, Paiton Pumroy, and Isa Truemper.
The B team had a great season as well finishing with a 4 and 4 record. They defeated Harding, Wilson,
Roosevelt and Taft on their way to the end of the season. The B team consisted of Lindsay DeWolf, Amelia
Barnes, Bayanna Berry, Kate Brokaw, Kennedy Felland, Wren Greubel, Tacoria Harrison, Mikayla Reister,
and McKenzie Todd.
Coach Pins and Coach Fry want to congratulate the girls on a great season and we hope to see you all
out again next year.
8TH GRADE GIRLS COMPLETE SUCCESSFUL SEASON
The McKinley 8th grade girls’ basketball team had a very successful season. The A team which consisted
of Caitlin Riley, Kobie Dills, Sami Squires, Sammy Mia, Lauren Porazil and Jurnee Carr went 6-2 on the season. The 6 wins came over Excelsior, Harding, Wilson, LaSalle, Regis and Roosevelt. The two losses came
against a very good Taft team, which went 7-1, and Oak Ridge who finished 8-1. McKinley had one of the
toughest strength of schedules in the entire city.
The B team finished 5-3 and had a very nice season and kept improving. The team consisted of Mattea
Higgins, Kenzie Dills, Mariah Hopkins, Ayla Taylor, Najaya Johnson and Jenna McGuire.
JANUARY GOLDEN BEAR CLUB WINNERS
Congratulations to the Golden Bear Club winners
for the month of January! For those not familiar with
the Golden Bear Club, every month, staff nominates 6
students that do their PARRT every day at McKinley.
Two students are selected from each grade. These
students receive a reward period during Period 8,
a Golden Bear Club bracelet, a reward period with
future monthly recipients, and their picture posted on

Congratulations to Sue Novak who was
selected as McKinley’s 2014-2015 volunteer
of the year. Sue has been involved in the
McKinley Classic Edition Show Choir for the
past 3 years. Sue has been instrumental in
ordering and organizing outfits, assembled
the show choir parent committee, created sub
committees, established Google documents
and other scheduling procedures, recruited
parent volunteers, organized performance
and travel plans, and communicated with
parents on details. We are very fortunate
to benefit from her leadership and organization skills, work ethic, and—most importantly—her compassion towards students
in the program. In addition, Sue’s an active
member of the PTA and is involved in fundraising projects such as the Bear Walk and
magazine sales.

BEAR WALK
Johnson Elementary will become a STEAM school
starting in 2015-2016. The enrollment procedure
for new students asking to attend will be by lottery
process that will take place later this spring. No
new students will be allowed to permit to Johnson
Elementary during the 15-16 school year. All
students who are currently enrolled may continue to
attend if they so choose. There will be a process for
students who are currently attending and do not wish
to continue in the STEAM school. These procedures
will be explained in detail later this spring.
The third annual Bear Walk
will be on Friday, May 22 (rain
date is Thursday, May 28).

McKinley Middle School offers a recycling program for used ink cartridges and toners

What is the purpose of the PTA?
The PTA (Parent Teacher Association) provides volunteers and funding for programs
that support the students, school and staff at McKinley Middle School including:

Promote school spirit by coordinating spirit clothing sales
Provide volunteer support for fine arts programs and variety show
Fund school improvement projects
Publish and distribute Track’em Down student directory
Help plan and organize the “Bear Walk” (day of wellness/fundraising for outdoor
facilities)
Plan 8th grade year-end party
Organize teacher appreciation events
Provide snacks & water during ITBS testing
Facilitate Baby Think It Over program
Assist with administration of magazine sales
Sponsor “Reflections” art contest
Provide volunteer support for landscaping/grounds clean up
How can you support the PTA and get involved?
1. Join the PTA by becoming an official member. The $10.00 per member fee supports National PTA,
State PTA and City PTA as well as sustains the McKinley PTA membership.
2. Donate to the Bear Booster. Typically the PTA at McKinley does not conduct fundraisers. The
magazines sale is a school sponsored fundraiser and the funds raised go directly to the school.
Therefore the PTA relies solely on funds raised at the beginning of the year in this campaign in which
every dollar you donate will go directly to the PTA. And because the McKinley PTA is a 501(c) 3
organization your donation is considered a charitable contribution to the extent allowed for tax
deduction purposes.

HY-VEE CASH 4 STUDENTS – PROGRAM ENDS APRIL 30
Cash 4 Students is a charitable program that gives $1.00 to participating area schools for each
$200 of qualifying Hy-Vee cash register receipts (includes grocery, wine and spirits, pharmacy, and
gas station purchases). All 14 Hy-Vee Food Stores and Hy-Vee Drugstores are participating. Receipt
tapes can be dated from May 1, 2014 to April 30, 2015. Turn in your Hy-Vee receipts to McKinley main
office. Have your student write his/her name on the back of the receipt for a chance to win a Dilly Bar.

5K, 10K & 1 MILE
FAMILY FUN RUN
SATURDAY, MAY 9, 2015
Join us for the annual Lace Up For Learning 5K,
10K and 1 Mile Family Fun Run to benefit the Cedar
Rapids Community Schools Foundation. All levels
of runners and walkers are welcome!
The race begins and ends at Kingston Stadium
with the route running between Kingston and Jefferson High School. All events end with an Olympic
style finish on the track to the cheers of adoring fans!
Once again, the race will be professionally chip timed.

The Cedar Rapids Community School District supports a healthy
environment in which students learn and participate in positive dietary
and lifestyle practices. By facilitating learning through the support and
promotion of good nutrition and physical activity, schools contribute to
the basic health, academic achievement and quality of life of students.

STUDENT COUNCIL SERVES LUNCH AT MISSION OF HOPE
The student council recently served lunch at Mission of Hope. In addition to preparing and serving
lunch, students set up the dining area and greeted the patrons. After serving lunch to about 100 people,
students stayed to clean up. It was a very rewarding experience for our student council members. The
mission director commented, “McKinley students brought such a fresh uplifting atmosphere to our facility
today; you are welcome anytime. Please come back!” Giving back to the community is a great way for our
students to learn compassion, empathy and how to be a servant leader. The council will be helping one
day out of each month to support the Mission. Great job BEARS! Thanks for your leadership and service.
