THE PERFECT DESTINATION FOR HISTORY, NATURE, AND SMALL-TOWN CHARM
Two Harbors, MN is a beautiful and
quaint town located on the pristine
shores of Lake Superior. Known as the
gateway to the North Shore, Two Harbors
is a great place to stop and enjoy local
food, shopping, lodging, and the many
historical attractions the area has to offer.
If you are a person who loves to be
outdoors, Two Harbors is the perfect destination. Home to some of Minnesota’s
most beautiful State Parks, Two Harbors
offers numerous hiking trails, picnic areas,
camp sites, and scenic attractions like
Gooseberry Falls and Split Rock Lighthouse. There is a reason why the native
Ojibwe people called Two Harbors “a
place to spear the moonlight”. Where
Burlington and Agate Bay meet, Two Harbors offers some of the most untouched,

Seven Wonders of the North
Shore: Cook County, MN
HEAD NORTH ON 61 TO “PLAY TOURIST” AND ENCOUNTER WILD AND SCENIC SURPRISES
Have you really
experienced the
North Shore?
Just an hour and a half from
Duluth on Highway 61, you’ll
enter Cook County, where
seven scenic wonders await
you. Come see why this place
has earned raves from the likes
of Outside Magazine, Budget
Travel Magazine, and National
Geographic.
Cook County includes the
communities of Schroeder,
Tofte, Lutsen, Grand Marais, the
Gunflint Trail and Grand Portage.
This summer, get away (without
having to drive very far). Play
tourist. Explore Cook County
and soak up some of the North
Shore’s most spectacular sights
and experiences.
16 │GREAT SUMMER GETAWAY
Sawtooth Mountain Range
Jagged and ancient, with a distinctive
serrated profile, the Sawtooth Mountain
Range rims the Lake Superior shore. The
Superior Hiking Trail traverses several of
its summits.
The range includes the four peaks of
Lutsen Mountains – in winter, the Midwest’s largest ski area – and serves as a
craggy playground with hiking, mountain
biking, and vistas guaranteed to make
you stop and say “Wow.”
In the summer, Lutsen Mountains offers family-friendly thrills with the Alpine
Slide and scenic rides on the Mountain
Tram. Another family favorite in the area:
biking along the gentle, paved Gitchi-Gami State Trail that parallels the Lake
Superior shore.
Northern Lights
With so much wilderness and so few
sources of light pollution, Cook County is
a photographer favorite for capturing the
aurora borealis, or northern lights.
Caused by geomagnetic storms,
northern lights are a bucket-list favorite.
There's nothing like watching shimmering electric ribbons snake across the sky
to give you perspective on what’s really
important.
Also, what better way to celebrate
your engagement, wedding, honeymoon,
babymoon or anniversary than with a
romantic quest to see the northern lights?
During your visit, ask your lodging
host about the aurora forecast. There are
also a variety of aurora-forecast and alert
services available for your smartphone.
Even if you don't luck out and see the
lights, the sky here is so pure that on
clear nights you can see the spiral arm of
the Milky Way Galaxy.
Moose (and Other Wild Things)
“Where can we go to see a moose?”
This is one of the most frequent
questions asked at the visitor centers in
Cook County. Moose are a Minnesota
icon and an awe-inspiring sight, weighing
up to 900 pounds. The best place to see
a moose, if you’re lucky? The Gunflint
Trail. (Which, FYI, is actually a two-lane
paved road.)
Starting in Grand Marais on the Lake
Superior shore, drive inland on the
Gunflint Trail National Scenic Byway with
your eyes peeled and your camera ready.
Dawn and dusk are the best times for
moose-spotting.
Other wild things you might see in
Up The Shore
Cook County: lynx, fox, black bear, timberwolf, flying squirrel, otter (awww), and
over 155 species of birds. The Audubon
Society named the Superior National Forest one of the world’s “Globally Important Bird Areas.”
High Falls
Why is High Falls sometimes called
“Minnesota’s Niagara”? Imagine a
canyon with a river surging through it.
Sheer basalt walls fringed with forest. A
waterfall stretched from wall to wall, like
a dam. A deafening torrent freight-trains
over the edge. At the base of the falls,
sun glimmers in the spray and arcs up
a rainbow.
At 120 feet, High Falls is the tallest
waterfall in the state. It is located at the
top of the North Shore in Grand Portage
State Park, a scenic 45-minute drive from
Grand Marais.
Families love High Falls because the
walk to the viewing area is short enough
for kids. In summer, a wooden boardwalk
makes High Falls wheelchair- and
stroller-accessible.
Marais Art Colony and North House Folk
School. Check out a cool event.
Festivals, events and live music take
place throughout the summer throughout
the county. Check the event calendar at
visitcookcounty.com/calendar
Scenic Gateway to the
Boundary Waters
Grand Marais
Quirky. Artsy. Historic. Beautiful.
However you describe it, the harbor
village of Grand Marais certainly deserves
the title of “America’s Coolest Small
Town,” which it was recently awarded by
Budget Travel Magazine after winning a
national poll.
Along with breathtaking natural beauty, Grand Marais and the larger Cook
County area are widely known for arts,
history and culture. Explore art galleries,
museums and distinctive shops. Take a
class at the nationally renowned Grand
The Boundary Waters. A pristine wilderness of glacier-born lakes and
vibrant forests. No sirens, no honking,
just birdsong and the savory crackle of
your campfire.
National Geographic named the
Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness
(BWCAW) one of the world’s “50 Places
of a Lifetime.” Whether you paddle for
an afternoon or a week, the Cook County
experience isn’t complete until you’ve
been here.
Make the drive part of the journey by
taking the scenic route to the Boundary
Waters. Take Highway 61 north, following
the Lake Superior shoreline. Access the
Boundary Waters from the town of Tofte,
or continue to the harbor village of Grand
Marais, then turn inland on the Gunflint
Trail. The Gunflint Trail is a 57-mile paved
road that winds through a ruggedly beautiful landscape and ends on the shore of
Lake Saganaga, on the edge of the
Boundary Waters.
Not an outdoor person? One of the
friendly local businesses can set you up
for an easy paddle – or outfit you for an
overnight adventure.
Other Gunflint Trail adventures include
hiking into the past at Chik-Wauk Museum & Nature Center and flying through
the treetops with the Towering Pines
Canopy Tour.
Uncrowded State Parks
Did you know that Grand Portage
State Park – home of “Minnesota’s Niagara” – gets only 1/16th as many visitors as
Gooseberry Falls?
Cook County has four spectacular
and uncrowded state parks, all easily accessible no matter where you’re staying.
(We mentioned Grand Portage State Park
earlier.)
Cascade River State Park features a
breathtaking series of cascading waterfalls. Ample parking and a walking path
make this park easy to explore.
In Temperance River State Park you’ll
peer into a deep, narrow river gorge with
10-15 short drops. A short hiking trail
loop will bring you around the falls.
If you’re up for a heftier hike, head to
Judge C.R. Magney State Park and go
see Devil’s Kettle Falls, which flows into a
mysterious (bottomless?) hole in the rock.

NAMED ONE OF THE 20 BEST SMALL TOWNS TO VISIT IN 2015
BY SMITHSONIAN MAGAZINE
GREAT SUMMER GETAWAY │27
NW Wisconsin
Escape from the Ordinary
Bayfield, WI offers the perfect summer adventure. Just far enough to let you escape from
strip malls, drive-thru meals, and all the other hassles, hype and “have-to’s” of everyday life.
But still just an easy hour-and-a-half car ride east of the Twin Ports of Duluth and Superior.
Bayfield, Wisconsin is the perfect destination for travelers looking to escape from
the ordinary and dive into the extraordinary. Located on Wisconsin’s Chequamegon Bay, Bayfield is an easy hour and
a half car ride east of the Twin Ports of
Duluth and Superior. As soon as you
enter town you’ll swear you're on the East
Coast—greeted with Midwestern hospitality and views that will surely please.
Smithsonian Magazine recently named
Bayfield one of the nation’s “Top 20
Best Small Towns to Visit in 2015,” for its
unrivaled natural beauty and multitude
of attractions. Summer provides endless
opportunities for adventurers, couples,
art-lovers, berry-pickers and families.
The city of Bayfield is the gateway to the
Apostle Islands National Lakeshore—Wis28 │GREAT SUMMER GETAWAY
consin’s northernmost landscape made
up of a cluster of ”jewels”— 21 wooded
islands and 12 miles of mainland. If you
don’t have your own watercraft, the archipelago of islands is accessible by sailboat
charter, guided tour and rental kayaks.
According to Bayfield Chamber and Visitor Bureau Director David Eades, visitors
to the islands “have the opportunity to
experience where water meets land and
sky, culture meets culture and past meets
present.”
The islands boast pristine crystalline
beaches, towering sandstone cliffs and
spectacular sea caves.
The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore
is also home to the largest collection of
historic lighthouses in the nation. All
10 light towers are viewable by boat
and some are even open to the public.
Apostle Islands Cruise Line offers a variety
trips daily, including tours of the Raspberry Island lighthouse and to Stockton
Island—a favorite spot for hiking, picnicking, birding, swimming, beach-combing
and camping.
Summer provides the perfect opportunity to view the world-famous sea caves
with a guided kayaking tour. A bucket-list
item for many visitors, this is a must-do.
The caves appear to glow with color in
the golden sunlight of the early morning
or late afternoon, a perfect opportunity
for photographers.
First-timers paddlers can join guided
expeditions that make it easy and safe to
kayak Lake Superior. While planning your
kayaking adventure, choose from a number of guided half-day, day or multi-day
trips or arrange to rent your own kayak
at one of Bayfield’s kayaking outfitters.
Veteran paddlers will find plenty of routes
to suit their individual abilities and taste
for adventure—be sure to check out some
of the nearby shipwrecks.
Local guiding and renting outfitters
include Good Earth Outfitters, Living
Adventure, Lost Creek Adventures &
Outfitter, Trek & Trail, Superior Adventures and Wilderness Inquiry. Kayaks can
also be rented by the hour on Madeline
Island from Apostle Islands Kayaks. Real
time wave information is available at seacaveswatch.org.
Experienced sailors consider the Apostle Islands some of the best sailing and
recreational boating in the world. Yachting Magazine readers named Bayfield
one of the 50 Best Yachting Destinations
in 2012.
Madeline Island, the largest of the
Apostle Islands, is home to the historic
Town of La Pointe and is only a short
ferry ride away from the town of Bayfield.
Madeline Island offers several galleries,
shops, restaurants, lodging, marina and
a golf course designed by Robert Trent
Jones, Sr.
The island boasts two pristine campgrounds, perfect for families and groups.
“My family and I go to the island to
get away,” a recent visitor said. “When
you’re on the ferry, it feels like you’re
in Vancouver.”
NW Wisconsin
After an adventure on Lake Superior,
there’s no better way to refuel than by
visiting one of the 14 orchards and berry
farms located just outside of Bayfield.
During the summer, pickers can harvest
seasonal fruits such as strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, cherries, raspberries and currants. Because of Bayfield’s
unique climate—cool temps and moist
air throughout the growing season—
Bayfield’s orchards produce a variety
of succulent fruits, making Bayfield the
Berry Capital of Wisconsin. Weekly berry
updates are available on bayfield.org.
“Bayfield really is a foodie’s paradise.
You can find so much local produce here,
everything from fruits and vegetables
to locally roasted coffee and bread,” A
recent visitor from Chicago said, “And
the quality is exceptional.”
Easy exploration of the greater Bayfield Peninsula is afforded by Wisconsin’s
newest scenic byway. One of only four
scenic byways in the state, the Wisconsin
Lake Superior Scenic Byway follows the
southern shoreline of Lake Superior for
70 miles around the Bayfield Peninsula,
meandering through quaint, historic
harbor towns.
Art in Bayfield is plentiful and diverse.
Local artists happily invite visitors into
their studios, galleries and showrooms
to see first hand the quality work created
locally. You’ll also find their handiwork on
display in a selection of galleries, working
studios and shops.
Bayfield’s 53rd annual Festival of Arts
and Gallery Tour will take place on July
19 and 20. The event draws fine artists
and craftspeople from across the mid-
west who sell their wares in downtown
Memorial Park. Local artists also open
their studios and galleries that weekend,
inviting visitors in and featuring special
sales and live demonstrations.
Music lovers will find plenty of good
music and toe-tapping fun at Big Top
Chautauqua, an outdoor music venue
situated at the foot of Mt. Ashwabay
overlooking the Apostle Islands. The
venue is hailed as the “Carnegie Hall
of Tent Shows” and was named “Best
Outdoor Venue” by the Minneapolis Star
Tribune. Big Top features live, fresh-air
performances by acclaimed international
and regional musicians under an 950-person capacity blue and white canvas tent.
This year’s line-up includes Michael Franti
& Spearhead, Shanties & Shipwrecks,
Gaelic Storm, The Wailin’ Jennys, Hot
Rize, Keb Mo, and Brandi Carlile.
Those seeking history will find that it
truly comes alive in Bayfield. Visitors have
the opportunity to learn about Bayfield’s
legends and lore while exploring the
modern streets with a Bayfield Ghost and
History Walking Tour, led by guides in
period costume. From the arrival of the
Ojibwe on Madeline Island to the boom
years of big lumber and commercial
fishing, Wisconsin history has left its mark
on the Bayfield Peninsula. The Bayfield
Heritage Center, the Bayfield Maritime
Museum, the Madeline Island Museum
and the Visitor Center at the Apostle
Islands National Lakeshore Headquarters
all have state-of-the-art archive facilities
and provide interactive displays open to
the public. And to complete the experience, many of Bayfield’s historic homes
now operate as lodging establishments,
treating guests to the atmosphere of
19th century life, albeit with modern day
amenities and comforts.
Make plans today to relax, recharge
and escape the ordinary in the quaint
harbor town of Bayfield. For a complete
listing of events, lodging availability and
dining options in Bayfield, please visit
