Authentic Learning Through Projects

Authentic Learning Through Projects
As part of a project on comparing and contrasting world communities, third grade students
had this driving question: What is life like for a kid like me in a different country? Students
were given a choice of which country to focus on, based on the availability of community
experts in each of those countries. The options were: France, Germany, India, Mexico, and
Nigeria.
Students created interview questions based on what they would need to know in order to
answer the driving question. Students conducted one live interview with Lincoln High School
French Teacher, Madame Peterson; along with a French foreign exchange student currently
attending Lincoln. The other interviews took place through Skype, and were projected on a
Smart Board to the class.
The children were also able to Skype interview two Lincoln foreign exchange students
currently spending a year in Germany and India; as well as with a Mexican exchange student
currently living in Germany.
The class had a community expert from UW-Stevens Point, Dr. O, Skype with them to answer
questions all about her homeland of Nigeria. The third graders were able to learn a great deal
about being a child in a different country while honing their technology and writing skills! They
demonstrated their learning by creating a flag, a map, a Venn diagram and a five paragraph
comparing/contrasting essay. All in all, a very interesting learning experience for students!
