Multi Disciplinary Artists Celebrate Listening and SoundMaking Oakland, CA April 21, 2015: The Megapolis Audio Festival, a weekend long event dedicated to the art of sound, is coming alive in venues throughout Oakland and San Francisco from June 57, 2015. Tickets are available at megapolisfestival.org . Megapolis provides a forum for artists, educators, radio producers, musicians, and fans to share the secrets of producing and presenting innovative audio works online, on air, and on the stage. With performances, installations, interactive workshops, tours and more, the festival provides an affordable way for people of all ages to educate each other through best practices and inventive experiments in soundmaking. Megapolis 2015 will feature over 40 international, national, and local artists including documentarians, technologists, musicians, educators, urban planners, scientists, and radio producers . Some of the featured performers include: ● Roman Mars , executive producer of highly acclaimed podcast 99% Invisible ● Matmos , experimental electronic music duo; collaborated on albums with Icelandic musician Björk ● Al Letson , Peabodyawardwinning radio host, poet, playwright, and actor ● Doseone , a poet, rapper, singer, painter, producer, and member of cLOUDDEAD, anticon, and more ● Fantastic Negrito , winner of NPR’s 2015 Tiny Desk Concert Contest ● Kevin Blechdom (Blectum From Blechdom), a Bay Area experimental electron ic musician selfdubbed as an avenging angel of pop music ● Song Exploder , a podcast where artists deconstruct their songs from the inside out ● Mia Zabelka , classically trained Austrian violinist mastering the instrument’s sonic possibilities with electronics over the last 20 years ● Gamelan X , ensemble that remixes the ritual of a Balinese procession with a decidedly west coast twist Together, the three previous festivals in New York (2013), Baltimore (2010), and Boston (2009) attracted an estimated 1000 attendees and showcased over 250 unique artists. This year’s festival highlights the bay area’s progressive arts scene, infused with leading national and international artists from multiple disciplines. more Workshops and installations include: ● An immersive installation of soundemitting light bulbs that react to festival attendees ● Interactive presentations on scientific innovations on music and storytelling controlled through conscious thought control and ‘infrasounds’ imperceptible to the human ear ● An open chair for electrosonic amplified haircuts (a “sidewalk sensation” says NBC) and combined storytelling / hairbraiding sessions ● An exercise in rapid prototyping using the basics of design thinking to introduce the idea of iterative problem solving for artists ● Guided audio tours to reorient participants with unique public spaces ● Hacking and soldering workshops to create LightTheremin CD cases, lowwattage radio transmitters, homemade synthesizers, and manipulated game controllers The Festival will produce events in San Francisco on Friday June 5 and in Oakland on June 67.
