Instrumental Music Band Performance
Our Instrumental Band students performed last week on the junior campus at the Autumn Concert and there
were some fantastic performances. Congratulations to all the students who performed and thanks to Viv Doolan,
Brett Mifsud, Ellyce Calder who organised the evening and to the parents, families and friends who came along to
support them. The performances really showed how much hard work the students have put in and have certainly
allowed the students to develop their musicianship skills.
College Annual Production
Rehearsals have commenced for this years’ annual musical production of Singin’ in the Rain. I know students,
parents, guardians and staff are excited as they build to the performances in August.
Dance Showcase
This week we held our Dance Showcase in the theatre at senior campus. There were some wonderful
performances and congratulations go to all the students who participated. Thanks to Colette MacLaren, Sally
Stepniewski and Sue Lees who organised the evening and to the parents, guardians and families who came along
and supported the students.
Car Park – Senior Campus
I would ask all parents, guardians and students to be particularly careful at all times in the car park area at the
senior campus especially at the peak periods of before and after school. I realise the gravel car park, which is
owned by the Maroondah City Council, has no structure to it in terms of how cars enter and exit the area,
however please be aware of the potential risk to students.
Mid-Year Exams
Students in Years 8, 9, 10, 11& 12 will be undertaking exams over the next few weeks. We wish the students all the very best for their
forthcoming exams.
Report Writing Day
The college will have its Report Writing Day on Friday 12 June. Students are not required at school on the day.
Leave
I will be taking leave from 22 June to 26 June. Carol Ashton will be Acting Principal during this time.
End of term
Term 2 finishes on Friday 26 June. Students will be dismissed at 2.30pm on that day. School resumes for all students on Monday 13 July.

College Council Report
The School participated recently in the Rainbow Flag in support of LGBTI students and more broadly the wider community. One of the speakers
was a Year 12 student from Melba who spoke of the support they receive as a LGBTI student. The presentation at Maroondah Council was well
attended by students, teachers, and the wider Maroondah community. It is fantastic that the wider community has embraced people who
identify as LGBTI.
At this week’s School Council meeting, two of our school leaders, David Chandler and Esther Boih, spoke and informed the School Council of the
students’ views. It was particularly pleasing to hear that the Year 12 students appear to have a good rapport and support each other as their
final year progresses.
Rob Steane – Council Member

Debating Update
On Monday June 1, the debating team participated in another debating round at Tintern Grammar School. The C Grade team were the only ones
to participate, as the other team’s opposition forfeited the debate. It was a secret topic meaning that the C Grade team only had one hour to
write their speeches on the night, having received the topic that night at a specific time. The topic was ‘Zoos should be banned’ and the Melba
team, were the negative, meaning they had to argue that we shouldn’t. Jessica Scott spoke as first speaker and outlined the team’s model and
provided some key points. Liam Ball spoke as second speaker and was able to identify some good holes in the opposition’s arguments. Josh
O’Sullivan was the third and final speaker from our team. He was able to clearly outline our argument and provided some very good rebuttal.
Liam Pearce and Stella Black helped the team to prepare for the debate. This was a great team effort and the students demonstrated the ability
to work to a deadline. The team went very well, winning the debate by 2 points.
Stella Black
On Monday 25 May, a group of Student Voice Representatives from Years 10 and 12 (Chang Chuol, Amy Sanderson, Josh Kirkwood-Parker,
Jessie Lightbound and accompanied by Mrs Jenny Peters) went on an excursion to Planetshakers, in Melbourne
for the World Vision Youth Conference. We spent the day learning and interacting on how to make a
difference in the world. The conference presented the students with the opportunity to make a real difference
by leading the 40 Hour Famine in their schools.
World Vision is a humanitarian organisation dedicated to working with children, families, and their
communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice.
Over the last 10 years, World Vision has run the World Vision Youth Conferences to inspire young leaders for a
better world. Across Australia they've reached over 50,000 students, equipping them with an understanding of
inequality and helping them stand up to poverty and injustice.
At the end, we set some goals for the school to participate in the 40th anniversary of the 40 hour famine. This
event runs in August and we would love to see a large number of Melba Students take part and help us reach
our goals. We will be providing more information as the event draws closer.
Big thanks to Mrs Lange and Ruth from World Vision for organising the event. Also big thanks to Mrs Peters for taking us to the event.
Chang Chuol - Student Voice Secretary.

Year 7
Our Year 7 students are very busy finishing up CAT tasks in all subject areas. I am really pleased to hear from teachers how well students are
working in class and also the seriousness with which they approach these tasks. Teachers are about to award ACE points for each of their
subjects, with an ACE assembly at the end of the term. All students who have achieved 80 points or over will receive a certificate. I look forward
to seeing how many ACE points each student is able to achieve.
In the last week of term, the Year 7 students will be participating in a Health Immersion Program. This is to develop their knowledge and skills in
a variety of forums to improve their mental, social and physical health. More information will be sent home, but I am very excited at the planning
that has gone on so far. I look forward to participating with the students on this initiative.
Pancake Breakfast
The pancake breakfast is a way to have an
informal get together with families and
allow families of students in the classes to
meet and then get to know each other. It is
a lovely event for everyone involved.
Deb Stacey – Year 7 Leader
Year 8
As the end of the first semester approaches we recognise that it becomes a busy time. All our students will have CATs that will now be due and
we encourage parents to check on the progress of your children concerning these. Most will already have been due by this past week. Year 8
students participated in their inter-school winter sports program on Friday. This has been an opportunity for them to participate in their
favourite sports activities or an opportunity to learn a new sport with new skills. This is an important stage of their learning as they begin to find
their likes and abilities and begin to develop a sense of where their future might lead. Their reports, which are about to be written, will reflect
this development and we encourage you to sit and go through the report with your child when they become available.
Chris Hunter - Year 8 Leader
Year 9
Form Challenge Week got off to a great start for the Year 9's! Tuesday's multi-subject quiz saw all of the groups working together to try and
quickly answer as many of the questions as possible in order to score maximum points. The results will be added to Thursday's 'Tabloid Activity'
and the form with the most points wins a free pizza lunch on Monday June 15!
CAT's should be almost finalised now, with the last few due in the next couple of days. Next Thursday all students will sit a Maths and English
exam. All students are reminded that they need to provide their own calculator (with COS and SIN) and dictionary.
Winter is certainly here, with the temperature taking a dive this week! A firm reminder regarding uniform - while we understand that it is cold,
and we certainly encourage layering clothes to stay warm, hoodies are definitely not acceptable uniform items. Students seen wearing a hoodie
will be asked to hand it over to be collected at the end of the day. Students are encouraged to wear long sleeved white t-shirts (without visible
logos) under their uniform to help them stay warm.
Sarah Cultrera – Year 9 Leader
Senior School
Congratulations to the Year 10 and 11 students that began their end-of-semester exams this week. So far, students have conducted themselves
in an exemplary manner. These exams continue on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of next week.
A reminder to all Year 10 students that Challenge Week begins with a session at school on Monday 15 June. All Year 10’s are expected to attend
what I anticipate will be a rich and valuable learning experience. Some of the activities students have to look forward to include sessions on
wellbeing, physical challenges including boxing and roller skating, orienteering and the annual ‘Amazing Race’.
Year 10’s are also encouraged to ensure they have Work Experience placements arranged for the final week of term. Any students that do not
have Work Experience organized will be expected to attend school, although regularly scheduled classes will not run.
Year 12 students begin their Unit 3 exams on Tuesday 9 June and will complete these over the coming 3 weeks. Students are reminded that they
should be revising their Unit 3 content in preparation for these exams – and to gain an accurate indication of their performance in preparation
for the VCAA exams in November.
Adriana Box – Senior School Leader
Homework Club – Every Tuesday & Thursday after school – Senior Library –Teachers available to assist - Afternoon Tea supplied.
Year 10
Work Experience- Students who have not already organised Work Experience placements need to do so immediately. If you are struggling to find
a placement or position, please see Mrs Arambasic. If you have arranged a placement but not completed all relevant paperwork, please do this
promptly because you can’t attend Work Experience without completed paperwork.
Challenge Week- Today paperwork and permission forms for Challenge Week were distributed to all students. I would ask that parents and
students carefully read all enclosed information relating to issues of payments, activities, school uniform and transportation arrangements. Do
note that if you have already paid $25 for Challenge Week, you need pay no further money.
Exams- Year 10 exams commence on Thursday June 4 and will conclude on Thursday 11 June. Please note that there will be no exams or school
on Monday 8 June (Queen’s Birthday) or Friday 12 June (Report Writing Day). Please note all of the following with respect to exams:
That all Exam timetable issues are to be directed to Miss Box.
That students need to arrive at the exam location 10 minutes prior to the commencement of their exam. This is obviously so that we
can commence exams on time.
Students have had all rules and regulations relating to the conduct of exams explained to them. In addition to this, a written exam
script will be read to students prior to the commencement of all exams.
School uniform is to be worn to all exams.
Mobile phones should ideally be left at home or in a locked locker. Students must surrender mobile phones and other communication
devices at the beginning of each exam session. These will be returned at the conclusion of each exam.
There is to be no verbal or non-verbal communication during exams.

Year 10 Shape Your Destiny Seminar
On Friday 22 May 2015, Year 10 students took part in an interactive career focussed
workshop called ‘Shape your Destiny’. Darren Pereira inspired our students for four
hours of self-exploration and motivation. It was truly an uplifting experience for all
involved!
This is what some of the students replied when they were asked
“What did you gain from the seminar?”:
“This seminar helped me realise that thinking about your future doesn’t have to be
daunting. Sure, it can be a bit scary, but it isn’t too bad. Thanks heaps for the day!” –
Madi
“I was feeling very unmotivated about my future / current education, the seminar really helped me get some of the motivation back. Thank you. You
are really great at what you do!” - Sarah
“I gained how to learn what talents I have and now I know what area of jobs to look at.” – Brittney
“I gained the knowledge of how passionate I am to help people going through a tough time at home.” – Gabbi

and what pathway I need to take to get there.” – Jake
Dee Arambasic - Careers/VETis Leader
Year 10 Girls take friendship and understanding to Primary Students
On Monday June 1 an enthusiastic group of Year 10 girls from the ‘Friendship and Understanding Project’ visited Ainslie Parklands Primary school
to work with the students on developing skills relating to creating positive relationships and friendships.
The diverse group of EAL and mainstream girls have been meeting each week and through working together on the ‘positive relationship project’
have learnt about each other’s diverse experiences, discovered shared interests and attitudes, and collaborated together towards a common
goal.
The girls worked in groups of three and the Primary students rotated through the fun-filled activities that the girls had prepared. All the students
thoroughly enjoyed learning about ways of creating positive relationships and avoiding
negative behaviours.
Jenny Peters – Library Manager
“On June 1, Year 10 Friendship girls went to Ainslie Parklands Primary School. We
had such an amazing time with the Primary Students. We played games with them in
different groups and all the students were very nice and kind. They said they enjoyed
our games and had fun and we did too!” Mary and Paw Htoo Doh
“This 8 week program involved a group mixed
of EAL and mainstream girls who got together
each week with Kate and Emma. We got to
know each other better than we did before
working together to organise fun and exciting
activities for the 4/5/6’s at Ainslie Parklands
Primary School. It was a great experience for
all of us and we all learnt something new about each other. We learnt how to deal with difficult
situations and how to overcome hardship in life. We went to the Primary school and showed the children
the things we learnt and taught them that it’s okay to talk about your problems to other people and
how to make school easier and more enjoyable for everyone. It was great fun being around little kids
and seeing how each of them feel about school. All of the girls in the program would like to give a big thanks to Emma and Kate for everything.
We enjoyed our time together and we hope to see you again soon.” Sammie
Year 11
Week 9 of Term 2 is now upon us. That means we have reached the end of Unit 1 and the start of Semester 1 exams. This has been a busy and
quite stressful time for all students, with preparation for final assessment tasks and revision for exams intensifying. With the end of the exams,
Unit 2 subjects will begin.
By now, Year 11 students should have developed a consistent study regime, which enables them to complete any homework as well as reinforce
the skills and knowledge they have developed in class to ensure they meet the rigor of their Year 11 course. If any students are struggling to cope
with the demands of Year 11 and need some help organising themselves and a study regime that works for them, we encourage them to speak
to their Year Level Leaders, Mentor or Classroom Teachers.
In Week 7 Melba College held the Fit-2-Drive program to give students skills in making safer travel choices and influencing drivers in driving
safely. The program included presentations by the Victoria Police and the Metropolitan Fire Brigade and really focused on giving students a sense
of their own power to control the circumstances of their travel, such as choosing travel options that mean the vehicle is not overloaded, and the
driver is alert and following the law, such as P-Plate restriction. Planning ahead and clearly expressing what is safe, and unsafe behaviour go a
long way to helping keep young adults safer on the roads. Several representatives of the Year 11 cohort made a short presentation to Assistant
Principal Mr Lees in front of the whole year level on their conclusions from the Fit-2-Drive program.
Andy Lockey and Greg Mellow - Year 11 Leaders
Year 11 Biology Excursion to Healesville Sanctuary
Last Monday the Year 11 students went to the Healesville Sanctuary to complete a
series of field activities in three different ecosystems. The Sanctuary educator took us to
an area not normally accessible to the general public which was in an almost natural and
undisturbed state. The students were guided through two hours of activities which
included using classification keys to identify the major plants in the area, identifying
scats and digging marks of
different animals, using
quadrats and line transects
to determine the type and
abundance of vegetation in
the three ecosystems and
recording the abiotic factors
in the area.
We also had some time to explore the Sanctuary itself. The educator and the bus
driver both made very complimentary comments about the students’ behaviour and
engagement in the activities.

VCAL Garden Project
Every Friday, we as a Year 11 and 12 group, are doing gardening with Mrs Kirby. We have
been turning the soil, fertilizing the soil and digging holes to put the new plants and seedlings
in it. So far we have planted Cabbage Savoy, Basil, Snow Peas Oregon,
Spinach, Rocket, Kale Red Russian and Kale Black Tuscan, which has grown
since February through May. The plants are to be used for Food and
Technology classes and the school canteen.
The people that are doing this gardening group are Ben (Year 11), Tom (Year
12) Dylan (Year 12) and Caitlyn (Year 12) As you can see in the photos these
are some of the things we have been planting in the garden beds.

Year 9/10 Boys Soccer
Melba College’s ‘A’ team played some fast attacking soccer to win their round robin competition held at Silcock Reserve on Thursday May 21.
The boys teamed exceptionally well and took their opportunities to go through the competition, undefeated.
The first match was against Norwood and the boys had a very swift reality check, conceding a goal in the first 30 seconds. They managed an
equaliser in the first half, however they went behind twice more, each time managing to reply with some excellent strikes. The boys then scored
what was to be the winner with the game finishing in an exciting 4-3 victory.
Ringwood were the opponents in the second game. It was an extremely
competitive game, with Melba’s single goal being enough to secure victory.
The team’s defence was really tested in this game, with Ringwood hitting
the bar twice during the game, however the boys managed to hold on in a
tense finish.
By the third game the boys only needed to defeat Mooroolbark to win the
competition. Mooroolbark had lost their first two games heavily to
Ringwood and Norwood so the boys went into the game in a confident
mood. Too many party tricks and showboating made it difficult for the boys
to score, however eventually they found the target after 15 minutes play.
More goals then followed, with the final result, 5-0.
The team will now represent the Maroondah Division in the Eastern Region
competition early in Term 3 (July 20).
Intermediate Girls’ Netball
Our 2 teams participated strongly in our Maroondah division round robin.
Stand out players in team 1 were Emma Mahar and Alexa Martz who
created havoc for the opposition in both attack and defence. Unfortunately
the team was overpowered by the opposition, but it was impressive to see
the team’s development in the pool games.
The combo year 9/10 team were lucky enough to make their section’s grand
final, after 1 win, 1 draw and one loss in their pool games. They were
overcome Ringwood SC, however it was pleasing to see the improvement from their round game against the same team with a 5 goal reduced
deficit. Grand final Result: Melba 7- Ringwood 11. Again strong performances were shown by Georgia Corless, Shannon Kairys and Grace Cisilin.
Division Cross Country
The frosty and drizzle filled weather mean one thing only: It is Cross Country Season!
Our team of about 40 athletes ran around HE Parker reserve and on the Dandenong
Creek Trail to see if they could put Melba in the chance of securing another Per Capita
Shield.
A huge congratulations to all involved and specifically to our Medallists on the day:
nd
2 14 y.o girls : Isobel Feller
nd
2 16 y.o. girls: Bronte Rowlands
nd
2 20 y.o. girls: Rosie Hoinville
These girls plus the following students will represent the school at the Eastern Region
Finals on June 16. Best of luck team!
Region qualifiers: George Benham, Mitchell Clavant, Daniel Johnson, Nyankor Joseph,
Therese Hird, Arena My, Luke Perry, Bailey Stelfox, Emma Dall, Georgia Corless and

Dance Showcase Semester 1
Last Wednesday night the theatre stage was full with dancers from year 7, 9 and VCE
as was the audience with family and friends supporting the students.
With phenomenal performances that highlighted the hard work, hours of rehearsals
and new skills learnt, the students performed a range of solos, group and whole class
dances. The year 7 Thriller group showed understanding in stagecraft as well as
choreography skills with incredible zombie-like makeup, the year 9 students
performed a beautiful contemporary group dance to close the night and the VCE
students took to the stage for
their second last time at Melba.
Bianca Swaine, Manny Rita, Sarah
Johnson and Aoife Healey were
able to share their solos that will later be assessed by external examiners at their end of year
exams with their family and friends. All students should feel proud of their achievements and
successes showcased on stage.
It was delightful to see so many people supporting the dancers and the cheers
from the audience as each student accomplished so much by simply being on
the stage in front of so many. Dance Showcase highlights that the arts is a
place where creativity can be encouraged and embraced, originality is sought
after and confidence is developed. If you missed out this time we hope to see
you at the next
Showcase.

Would you like to host an exchange student?
Next Semester Melba College will be hosting two exchange students, a boy from Korea and a girl from Brazil. Both students will be going into
Year 11. There is an opportunity to host Julia from Brazil at the beginning of next year for 3 months if any Melba family is interested. This is a
wonderful multicultural experience. Anyone interested should email Mrs. Ricci for details. [email protected]
Edrolo has arrived!
A big thankyou to Edrolo for their generous offer to provide their program to 8 Units 3 and 4 VCE subjects at $20 per student per subject. This is
a 20% discount on their normal price. Students have already got access and are using the tool to study for their midyear exams. We are hoping
that this additional resource will provide the opportunity for our students to thoroughly prepare for SACs and to continue to use it as they now
start focussing on the exams in November. We welcome student feedback on its effectiveness as a tool to enhance their learning.
Any parent or student with a question re access or use of this resource can contact Ms Box or myself. Students and staff will be receiving training
in coming weeks.

Melba College ICL Awards
The ICL Awards are intended not only to recognize student achievement in a wide variety of areas, but also to build and strengthen
our relationships with the local community. The awards are divided into three categories:
Individual: a student who demonstrates positive behaviour and good habits that facilitate the development of their character
strengths as a person.
Citizen: a student who acknowledges and acts on their responsibilities as a member of our community through active involvement in
programs that improve our school, local or global community.
Learner: a student who demonstrates dedication to their learning that results in growth in knowledge and understanding of their
studies beyond that expected of a student at their level.
What makes these awards different and an exciting prospect for the College is the opportunity for nominations for these awards. We
are highly interested in learning more about our students and the activities they undertake outside of their school time, and as such,
are looking for nominations for these awards from students and members of the local community.
Further details about the ICL Awards including nomination forms, are available on the College website.
If you know (or can point us in the direction of someone who might know) about the activities our students are taking part
in that may deserve recognition, please contact us at the College at [email protected] or on 9870 4551.
Melba College Mid Year FONO Music Concert:
PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF DATE – JULY 30
The Melba College FONO is scheduled for 7.00pm on July 30 and will be held in the Senior
Campus Theatre Brentnall Rd, Croydon (accessed off Maroondah Hwy). Parents, family and
friends of performers are most welcome to attend and there is no charge. Please note that this
year’s FONO is a whole school event and is not separated into junior and senior concerts.
FONO means For One Night Only and is a concert that showcases the musical talent of
students at Melba College. Acts at FONO are quite varied and can include rock bands, solo
guitarists, groups that have come from classroom music and rap artists. We also have many
singers who like to showcase their skills backed by either acoustic guitar or piano. If you think
you have an act that would be suitable for FONO then you need to see Mr Mifsud at the Junior
Campus as soon as possible because places are limited.
