Washington has been asked to be the Host State this year. So it would be wonderful to have as many of you as are planning to attend to help out with the host duties. Our duties include: 1) playing on the contest stage each evening, Monday thru Saturday from 6:30 to 6:50. This is to be more like a “jam” setting to show the lighter side of the contest; 2) judging the Certified Showcase Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings at 7:10. Three judges are needed each evening – the same three or different ones – our choice; 3) playing at local nursing homes and care centers Monday through Friday at specified times; 4) playing on a float in the parade Saturday at 11:00 am. If you know you will be there, please e-mail me at [email protected] so we can put a schedule together. Not everyone needs to do all events, but it would great to have a variety so that the same people aren’t doing everything. ~ Page 2 ~ FROM THE WORKSHOP CHAIR As we get close to the time to mail in your enrollment forms, I’d like to provide you with the contact information for the hotels/motels that are giving us a special rate during the Workshop. When you make your reservations, please be sure to tell them that you are with the fiddlers. You will need to secure your room with a credit card. All room rates are plus tax. All rooms not booked by Friday, June 26, 2015, except for Heritage Suites, will go back into inventory. Heritage Suites at 511 S. Division in Moses Lake has 6 townhouse units, very close to the school. They have 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms with full kitchen, dining and living room, washer/dryer, fully furnished. Their summer rate is normally $119, but they are giving us a rate of $90/night. Two families could possibly share one unit and cut down on costs. However, because they are always booked solid during the summer, they aren’t giving us much time to secure these units. If you are interested, it is imperative that you call and make your reservation immediately with either Jason or Kathryn. Jason’s number is 509 765-7707. Kathryn’s cell is 509 431-3356. These units are only being held specifically for us until April 15th. After that, they will honor the price if there are units available, but will book them out to the general public. The Holiday Inn Express at 509 766-2000 is offering a rate of $120.36/night for either 1 king bed or 2 queens. We have 8 double queen rooms and 7 king rooms blocked until June 26th, at which time those not reserved will revert to their inventory. They are at 1735 E. Kittleson Road. Amenities include an indoor pool and whirlpool, free high-speed internet access, and the Express Start hot breakfast featuring their signature cinnamon rolls. Shilo Inn Suites at 509 765-9317 is offering a rate of $99/night for up to two adults in each room, with any children under 17 free. Additional adults would be an additional $10/night. Amenities include their 24 hour pool, spa, sauna, and steam room, and continental breakfast as well as wifi. They are located 1819 E. Kittleson Road. Ramada Inn at 509 766-1000 is offering a rate of $79.99/night for king or double queen rooms. Amenities include full deluxe breakfast, indoor pool and free wifi. Friday and Saturday night rate is $111.99/night. They are located at 1745 E. Kittleson Road. Inn at Moses Lake at 509 766-7000 is offering a rate of $65.99/night for king or double queen rooms. Amenities include full breakfast, in-room refrigerator, microwave, and free wifi. They are located at 1741 E. ~ Page 3 ~ Kittleson Road. This rate is good only by calling the hotel directly. It is not good online or through a 1-800 booking number. If you already booked a room here and are paying more than that, you can cancel your reservation, and call Nona directly to book a room through our block. Again, be sure to mention that you are with the fiddlers. Comfort Suites at 509 765-3731 is offering a rate of $114.99/night for either king or double queen rooms. Amenities include full breakfast, pool, free wifi. They are located at 1700 E. Kittleson Road. At least it feels like it. The good Lord has blessed our beautiful Wenatchee valley with many fragrant and blooming flowers, shrubs and trees. Our faithful members are keeping a steady rhythm with our ten play dates each month playing for Assisted Living places and Convalescent homes. We love to play for them because it brings so much joy to us and them. We had many attending and enjoying a pizza party in the Fireside room for our February business meeting and jam. We enjoyed Leonardo, a twelve year old young man who entertained us with amazing accordion playing at our play date in Leavenworth. One of our "seasoned" members, Bud Starr, volunteered to conduct a class in music theory. Many members are enthusiastic about this. Time and place to be announced. Joe Leonard, our vice chair is doing a great job taking over duties while our chairman, Gerry Gengler is recovering from back surgery and is fighting cancer. Thank you for your prayers. So far, we are sending 20 kids to the Moses Lake Workshop. The kids all came and made their requests for scholarships and it was unanimous that we send them all. We have been doing an after-school instrumental class at one of the local elementary schools, teaching fiddle and guitar once a week. It’s going very well, and one of those students is going to camp as well. We’re pretty excited to have so many kids going. We lost one of dearest fiddlers last month. Glenn Berry passed away at Harrison Hospital in Bremerton on Friday, February 27, 2015. He was a very dear and wonderful man, and a superb fiddler. A memorial jam is being held on Sunday, April 19th from 2:00 – 4:00 in the modular building at St. Anthony’s Episcopal Church in Silverdale for fiddlers and friends who wish to come celebrate his life with their fiddles and their presence. Finger food, tea, coffee, sodas, and water will be provided. The church is located at 10239 Old Frontier Road, Silverdale (just north of the corner gas station). ~ Page 7 ~ From the Music Editor Kiley’s Reel I’ve mentioned the wonderful Manitoba/British Columbia fiddler, Myllie Barron a few times (June/July, 2006, the Evergreen Fiddler III and April, 2008). He was born in 1910 and was an accomplished dance fiddler, radio entertainer and winner of some significant competitions. We always enjoyed his visits to Seattle, Northwest Folklife and assorted jam sessions. This is one that Phil Williams recorded at a jam session in 1995 in Weiser, Idaho and has posted on the Voyager Records Web site (www.voyagerrecords.com). Listen there or at the Tune of the Month section of www.wotfa.org. Myllie really digs in on this one and lets us know what real dance fiddling is all about. Notice the punch he gets on the grace notes in the A part. Kiley’s Reel has been published in the Cole Book/Ryan’s Mammoth Collections of fiddle tunes and Phil included it in his “Mandolin Player’s Pastime,” a substantive collection of fiddle tunes for mandolin with tablature. In fact, that is where I first learned it. It has also been recorded by Don Messer, Alisdair Fraser and Rodney Miller, among others. The A parts are pretty consistent across the different versions with more differences appearing in the B parts. If you haven’t done so lately, you should visit the Voyager Web site and peruse the selection of recordings, books, articles and, in particular, the Northwest Field Recordings section. On this one Phil has featured, at present, some 333 recordings of 102 different fiddlers from the Voyager archives. Many are locally known fiddlers/musicians you may have heard at shows or contests. Other nationally known artists may have been just passing through town: Bill Monroe or Tommy Jarrel for example. In fact, there is a complete two hour private performance of Mr. Jarrell recorded at the Williamses’ home in Seattle. Big Thanks for all the incredible work Phil and Vivian Williams have engaged in over the years. I have been going for quite a few years, and it is an amazing learning/sharing experience. I especially love the jamming with old and new friends. Costs have increased over the years, but who can put a price on learning and friendship? It is a real treat when Cynthia Hamm brings her students to our monthly jam at the Grange. Good work, Cynthia! We continue to average six play-outs a month, in addition to our open jam and business meeting. We are blessed with a small-but-faithful group of musicians. Lately, we are noticing Owen Ratliff's musical growth on both the mandolin and fiddle. And he is a skillful guitar back-up as well. Oh, and did I mention that he carries and sets up the sound system as needed for play-outs, as well as helping set up sound and chairs for our Grange jam? And he volunteered to be secretary and write the minutes of our business meetings? Talk about multi-tasking! A big THANKS to Owen!
